This is the last of the robot/history trilogy. It's about John Henry. It's more myth than actual history, but the actual legend says he was the toughest guy around back in the day, and he died of exhaustion while besting a steam-powered railroad spike hammer. It's a great story of human vs. technology.

Wow - really great illustration! The 'bot almost looks like an etching.What about adding more detail to John Henry - just a bit more tone and shading like you've got on the railroad robot?

Great style you have going on here. The only place that seems a little weak is your treatment of John Henry. Maybe you could play around with different poses that elaborate on how much of a challenge he sees himself in for.

I like the simple style on John Henry, makes him stand out from the machine. The machine is AMAZING. the only thing I might fiddle with is the white cross-hatch on the gray part of the clouds and the midsection of the robot - it looks a little too much like a tablecloth pattern to me. Apart from that little insignificant nit-pick, I'd say this is good to go :)

Thanks for the great feedback. I want John Henry to stand out- like he's a superhero the scene is chaotic but he's going to bring it under control. Still, there might be other ways I can spice him up a bit.



And the smoke/steam around the groin is a little weird looking. I'll play with that and maybe move it so it doesn't look diaper-ish...

Why stop with a trilogy? "Twenty if by Giant Robot" is one of my favorite Threadless shirts. I'm neutral on your Ironclad one and this one. (Amazing art...but I don't like them enough to buy them.) You should keep doing "History with Robots" shirts. If you're set on keeping it an American history trilogy, then why don't you make a couple more trilogies? Ancient history, European history, etc...

Are there silhouettes of others running from the robot?

If that's what I'm noticing, I think you should add a few more make them just a bit more defined.

The only thing about his head I'd fix, is that his jaw line wouldn't cut over the line that extends up from the neck like the line does from the back of his head. Both lines cutting over the neck lines make it look like a bulbous feature sitting atop a shaft.



If his jaw line is instersected by the neck line, and maybe toss a little bit of halftone under his chin (if that looks good) it will look most like a head.

I like, but the photographer in me notices that the direction of the light isn't consistent. His shadow should be going to his left (our left too, if we're looking at the shirt as pictured, versus wearing it). Unless, of course, the robot gives off light and mere mortals can't see it (just the shadows of it). =)

This is going to be a winner.

The thicker smoke on the ground makes it harder to see the railway tracks in this version. It might be the halftones messing around. Do you have a larger version on flickr?
