I like how Nixon looks. I like the colors. I like the halftone pattern for Nixon's skin. I'm not sure the halftone pattern is working as well on the circles. Looking at the second slide where you're showing the placement it looks like your circles aren't perfectly circular, but that maybe a result of the halftone pattern on the circles. I think it's kind of a funny idea, but I'm not sure people will go for a shirt with Nixon's face on it.

Fonus on Oct 05 '09
Thansk for the tips! I actually wanted the circles to be slightly irregular to get a sort of organic, cartoon feel to it.
Do you think a shirt with Stalin will work if one with Nixon does not, by the way? (ha ha) Any ideas for Nixon replacement? |

thedebaser on Oct 05 '09
I don't really think the content is the issue, I think the problem may be with the concept. What exactly is the Tee supposed to say about Nixon? It's a very striking style. Also, I'd move the design placement up a bit on the Tee. Good luck.

The idea was to make a tee that gives you a slightly funny feeling. I thought using a character that had a somewhat bad reputation (at least in europe) and putting him into an improper context (such as a cartoon) would be interesting.
Using an old communist leader would have been overkill and maybe even offensive, and someone with a good reputation (such as Obama) would have been boring. Ideas, people? |
|
hm i didn't get it because im not from the US. you might want to consider that in choosing your figure :) good luck
leave some love? :) |

there is vibration between the blue ink and red ink, it makes it hard to look at because the chroma and value are to similar between the color, try lowering the value and chroma of the blue, that will help.

|
Fonus on Oct 05 '09
I am afraid you lost me there, Mengde.
Could you take that in layman language please. ...I am not from the US either, Agrimony. |

This was ment to look like Berlusconi at first. It turned out not looking like him at all, but I kind of liked him anyway...
Well...I need all the help I can get. |
|
Lmo6 on Oct 13 '09
I like this idea. I wish maybe there was some sort of catchy phrase or smart remark somewhere on the shirt.
The color choice is great. Don't change a thing. And I'm a super fan of Pop Art via ( Andy W. era) so I love the style as well. Catchy phrase or not this is ready to be submitted :) Love Take M Away Unbelievable Peacet |

I think the guy looks perfectly like Berlusconi. Maybe because I am italian, but when I looked at the design, he definitely came to my mind.
For the catchy phrase..if you open a newspaper (wherever you live) you'll find plenty of inspiring scandals and other things to help you! good luck |
|
I actually thought it was danny devito, which makes me like this even more

There is something missing idk.. try to make it more undestandable...
Help me with mine! http://www.threadless.com/profile/1023205/FranciscoCruz1990/critiques |

Fonus on Oct 14 '09
I guess it takes the eye of an artist to find Danny Devito in this picture (ha ha!)
Any ideas for catchy phrase? Something in italian maybe? I find it hard to make this more understandable since there is nothing to understand... Especially after I had to ditch the original Nixon idea. |
|
Lucanio on Oct 14 '09
I don't really understand it, maybe I'm just ignorant.
|
|
Fonus on Oct 14 '09
Yes, I am afraid you are, since I just wrote that there is really "nothing to unerstand" in the last post.
But thanks for stopping by. |

I just read through some legal stuff and cam to the conclution that it is ok to print a polititian on a tee. Have I got this right?
Look under "Political Figures Exception". I have been thinking about the request for a catchy text line. How about "Libertà e Responsabilità"? It is supposed to mean "Freedom and Resposibility". Is this proper italian? Aiuto, anyone! |
|
yep, according to that political figures are free to use!! So you could do Nixon after all!! I think it's a sweet design on black. You should sub it for the Pop Loves contest!!

Thanks for the tip, folks!
I might just give the Pop challenge a go. The original version was actually on black, but I thought dark blue was a bit mot fun. |
|
Fonus on Oct 16 '09
Nixon was discarded because people kept whining about it, by the way. Not because of the legal issues. (I would still love to have that one printed)
|
|
hahaaha what's to whine about?!?!

Few suggestions, execution-wise:
-I think the hand could be bigger by between 10-20% -I'd love to see it with solid rings behind his face instead of with the halftones. I think it'll still read as "pop art" and scream "screenprinted" but as it is now, I think the halftones on the rings are making things a bit too busy. Just behind his face, though. perhaps the outside edge of the red circle could keep the halftones if you felt it worked better. -I'd bump it up towards the collar on the shirt so that it sits more "top of the chest" and doesn't ride dead in the center. Check out a lot of shirts and you'll see the graphic sits fairly high to avoid feeling like it's falling down the shirt. It's the same principle that's in effect when you matte art with a touch more space at the bottom than the top. Cheers, keep submitting cool stuff like this. It's refreshingly good! |

Oh, and I don't think it needs a slogan to be honest. It's intriguing as it is. It'd be a conversation starter. And adding a slogan loads a shirt with meaning and pushes the concept in a direction. Warhol didn't put slogans on his portraits because they didn't need it: the message and meaning was in the process and the subject matter, right?
|
|
Fonus on Oct 16 '09
Thanks for the feedback.
I have been experementing with the background rings but I only got it looking like a bad looney toons rip off. Then again, if you take a fiew steps away from the screen... it kind of makes more sence. I am also a bit sceptical about having to explain the whole thing with a slogan. But maybe that is what it takes to get people to vote. (heh) |
|
grayillustration on Oct 17 '09
Aw, don't pander to the voters! They don't even ultimately decide whether it gets printed or not! Just make the strongest design you possibly can and, if threadless doesn't think it's worthy, you've got a portfolio piece.
|
|
Fonus on Oct 17 '09
Heh.. That part about votes was more of a joke, really.
About the halftone issue: What about making the whole print a little smaller? |
|
Fonus on Oct 18 '09
Changed some transparent lines and the inner halftones to black. Looking less busy?
Made the print a tiny bit smaller and moved it up on the chest. I also fiddled a bit with the colors and some tiny details that nobody cares about anyway. |
|
Fonus on Oct 18 '09
Ha! I managed to hit the "submit this!" button myself! How humble is that?
|
|
hahahah well look at that, I managed to hit it too :D Looking forward to seeing this in the contest :D
|
|
Fonus on Oct 18 '09
Weird. Can you score yourself in the contest as well? (hah)
But seriously. No ideas for changes? |
|
jess4002 on Oct 18 '09
not bad. nice update! i think it would look great on a green shirt, but it does look nice on black.
|
|
mutsu on Oct 18 '09
haha not sure how the italian prime minister will rate but the art is great and looks great on black.
but i just think it needs somekind of pun. not sure what though.. please check my brainwave |

Fonus on Oct 18 '09
What about blue? (ha ha.. noone but me seems to like it)
I think green might "collide" with the green color in the print. Can I submit with several alternate shirt colors? |

Ideas for a new title anyone?
Anybody knows if I can submit with several shirt colors? |
|
Fonus on Oct 19 '09
Hey people!
I was thinking of submitting since Im not getting anywhere with this design anyway. So, does anyboy know if I can submit with several alternate shirt colors? |
|
ben buzzkill on Oct 19 '09
Not sure about the multiple colour thing.
How about "eyyyyy!" for the title? I was going for the Fonz type noise, not sure it works written down. |
|
Yes, you can submit several different shirt colors.
I've done it a couple times. |
|
Fonus on Oct 19 '09
Thanks guys. And Ben, I think it worked just fine written down.
|
|
Fonus on Oct 19 '09
The gauntlet is thrown.
The dice is cast. I have submitted the design. |
