Eventually. I'm trying to think of something interesting. I want it to be completely different to what I usually do. The kind people at Threadless haven't actually invited me to undertake a design yet, so I don't want to appear too keen!
I entertained a derth of weapon combinations including nets, shields, spears and spikey things but this was the best I think. I do understand what you mean about creating symmetry between the two characters. Though, I don't imagine I'll change it from this.
Right. You may or may not be disappointed. I'm working on greayscale/sepia version on a braown shirt. I think its working - but I'll post it here shortly. I got fed up of working on bright colours - especially as I recently did a brightish one.
It looks good though I think. Gives it a classical feel and a more subtle touch of humour.
I like the Spartacus vs. WWF feel to the illustration so far -- too bad the gladiator's face is completely covered! The thought of his face being screwed up in a "WTF? Dude, are you kiddin' me?" (all in Latin, of course) is too gigglicious :D
Thanks guys. I have toyed with background artwork, but I like to avoid contextualising too much as it more fun to let the imagination do it with this kind of thing. If I put them on podiums, the old gladiator is out of place, and if I put them in a coliseum the new gladiator will be out of place.
Will post the final one here in a tick before subbing it.
The colour version wasn't working rsj - so i went for a slightly more sophisticated look! It allows me to get more detail in on the characters also. Red White and Blue on top of skin tones and polished brass was just not going to happen with a 5 ink limit. This is the best result on balance. The colour option looked a bit cheap, anyway! That's what I tell myself.
