Allright...Showing how the Titanic really sunk. Most of this picture is made out of wrinkled or folded paper (e.g. water, iceberg, ships, etc.) and then collaged together with drawings and photos.
I would really love to have some advice on the placement...Especially on how to handle the really horizontal water. Any ideas how to make it look good? I am still working on the colors (even though this is what it's going to look like, roughly) to bring out that made-of-paper-style a little more. Thx in advance.... |

Ars Fera on Jul 31 '09
Thanks for the load of help on my blog!
Lol! This is great. I think the water looks beautiful, I wouldn't know how to change it. As for placement I'm thinking Option A. I don't know why, but that's the one that really speaks to me :) The only thing I would change would be the ship itself.. if you can some how get a picture of an actual boat instead of a paper boat, I think the idea would be a bit more clear. But if you can't and you choose to keep the paper boat, write 'TITANIC' somewhere on it so people can catch on to the idea a little quicker! |
sausage_moe on Jul 31 '09
thx...i did one version with"titanic" written on the ship, but i did not like it that much, since everything else works without typo...is it really important that the ship is symbolizing the titanic? or does it work with any ship? i'm not so sure...
i liked the fact that the ship was made of paper like the other stuff but i don't have to stick to it. I could easily rip a titanic from the web and draw it. any more opinions on this? or concerning the placement? i like option A better, too...if you guys have any other ideas concerning the placement i'd be more than happy to check 'em out. thx a lot Ars Fera. |
when i first saw this i thought it was the moon....and then i was like...why is there a boat on the moon?? and then the iceberg's propellor looked like a satellite dish...
i think maybe if the color of the ocean wasn't the same color as the iceberg...then it might not look so lunar...ya know? |
sausage_moe on Jul 31 '09
hum. true. when you are too far into your own work you can't even see simple stuff like that. thx
oh man
i thought that was the moon as well |
SunnieBunnie on Jul 31 '09
I agree with those up there ^.. everything is kind of blending together... I like placement A a lot!
sausage_moe on Jul 31 '09
okay..so for starters i'll change that. you think i should go blueish with the water?
ericamichelle265 on Jul 31 '09
definitely go more blue with the water. I think it will help fight the "moonish" look, and also lessen the contrast between the shirt color and picture, which is a little too in your face right now

cool! thank you all so far. I'll try to do a new version till tomorrow. check back to help me out....

hmmm..strange. wrong text...okay:
i changed the water to blue consisting of 2 extra shades of blue and the shirt-color. I'll do another version, with a "real" titanic instead of this paper one and correct a slight coloring mistake til tomorrow, since i'm running outta time for today. Still awaiting your opinions. Thanks a lot. |
nasmo on Aug 01 '09
Cool idea, but I don't know about the ship. Not much about this says "Titanic" to me. In fact, it looks like there's two competing jokes going on here: people driving an iceberg and intentionally sinking a ship versus a paper boat hitting an iceberg and sinking instead of a real one.
The paper textures work great for the icebergs and the water because that's what icebergs and water look like. I probably wouldn't have even guessed that they were paper without your description. So without knowing that, what's the significance of the obviously paper boat? If the joke is that some guys in an iceberg wrecked the Titanic intentionally, then show us the actual Titanic, not a paper boat meant to represent the Titanic. The crumpled paper is a great idea, but I would use it as a means to an end, not as the point of the design itself. |
nasmo on Aug 01 '09
Durr. Should have hit Refresh.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing this with a real ship. I think it'll make a big difference. |
sausage_moe on Aug 01 '09
now i'm convinced, too. so tomorrow i draw the titanic!
it is a paper boat till now, because as you guessed, there really were 2 ideas colliding. the one with the paper and the one with the titanic and the ppl inside the iceberg. thx for your help, nasmo! |
ericamichelle265 on Aug 01 '09
the water is definitely an improvement!

Aha. on Aug 05 '09
thanks for the comment on my 'life in the shadow', sausage_moe.
I think your illustration is beautiful, I like the atmosphere and the theme is innovative, to say the least. I am thinking that maybe you should to use a bit different color tone on the parts of the objects that are submersed in water compared to those sticking up? |
sausage_moe on Aug 05 '09
thx aha. thought about it, didn't try it yet. it's kinda difficult though, since i'm scratching the 8-color limit already (right now 8 colors)... but i'll give it a shot and see how it turns out...maybe i'll pt it as a new version.
wow, i must say your style is really unique! i dont like the cutaway part of the iceberg too much though. i think you could try simplifying the colors, and try to make a focal point. right now i feel that theres just so much detail all wanting attention you dont know where to start looking at first.
Jeiji on Aug 05 '09
Bwaha! I do love this, it's funny, even though the Titanic incident was sad, lol... but Actually, wasn't it called, lik... the Titan or something? I don't know, but it was sad, hah. But still this is great. I only don't like the gradient thing goin' on for the cut away of the iceberg ship sub thang.
Party Foul! $5 Penalty! |
mattysmithhh on Aug 05 '09
Awesome design but It looks to me as if the ship has too much detail. Great design though!
sausage_moe on Aug 05 '09
thx, everybody.
@agrimony: what exactly do you mean by simplifying the colors? use less? that would be quite hard. agree on the detail on the ship though. as for the cut-out part of the iceberg that was mentioned a few times, i couldn't think of a better solution til now, but i'll be on it. keep 'em coming so i can do the changes at once:) |
ec555 on Aug 05 '09
neat idea! I would try getting rid of/ moving the ice directly behind the top of the periscope cause it kind of blends in with the background.
Nice idea..
Im not sure if i like the way you can see into the Iceberg (like a chunk of it is missing)... maybe another window, like you have on the side.. or just have it fade and you can see inside... and maybe less stars going up on the shirt... aside frtom that looks GREAT! |
AndyDufresne on Aug 05 '09
I agree less is more with the stars. I also agree that a port-hole window for viewing inside the window would be a good idea to look into.
sausage_moe on Aug 05 '09
good idea. thx, jodabaum and andy. why did i not think of that? i guess that's why i'm here;)
yeah i meant use less heh. yeah i guess its hard...
sausage_moe on Aug 05 '09
all i could do is drop one shade of grey, but it really doesn't help the design IMO. need those other colors really bad :D
oranjeguice on Aug 05 '09
THOSE BASTARDS!
looking good :D |
way too low on the shirt. move it up so the horizontal band of water goes across the main part of the chest (think boob area) and the stars could go off to the shoulder and sleeve.

critique my double hug |
Grande Sballo on Aug 11 '09
I'd remove the bottom part of the ship, in my opinion it's in a bad perspective, it doesn't match with the distance of the upper part, due to the "inclination" of the sea.
Still a good work!! |

sausage_moe on Aug 30 '09
okay. took me some time to get back to work, but here is the 4th version.
less stars, different way to look into the submarine, bigger people, no underwater titanic and a few minor adjustments. i hope you like it. please keep the comments coming and also critique on the placement. i did a second option since this was a request on version 3. changing the underwater parts of the submarine did not turn out too good, so i left it the way it was. maybe i'll add a few lifeboats and some floating stuff, but right now i don't feel like the pic needs any more details. thx for any comments... |
Ars Fera on Aug 30 '09
Ooo I like how far this has come!!
I like the bottom placement, I'm not sure why but it would definitely be my choice. Is this going to wraparound to the back? If not, I suggest some how ending the water before it reaches the sides, maybe just a sort of circle-ish view of the water? Because if it were to stay like this and not wraparound, it would look quite awkward with the design cutting off right at the edge. Other than that, I would mess with the stars a little and make that big star near the horizon a little smaller. It looks great though, I love the new window into the submarine!! And if you're not too busy, I would sure appreciate a comment and score for my second sub ever!! |
sausage_moe on Aug 30 '09
wow.thx.
no wraparound. the water is supposed to fade out, before reaching the sides...like, dissolve into dots...dunno how to call it. havn't put much effort to the stars yet, but will get to that.. |
thx for your comment on mine!
but i don't really see anything that needs work (besides thefading water part). like the idea and the design is great :) |
narkomanC on Aug 30 '09
i think 1st placement is to close to the tshirt bottom edge, so you could lift it up little bit. And also on first tee i like star path, how its goes.
Details is ok and agree to comment about bottom side of ship. Now it looks better |
Super Annie on Aug 30 '09
The first placement where the water is lower than the one on the right, is just perfect. It's actually amazing. I love how your tee evolved from its original design. It's a work of art.

MariaSurducan on Aug 30 '09
The only thing that bothers me is the propler of the submarine, otherwise I think it's a great idea. And It looks better without the underwater bit of the ship - at least for me.
lunestaaa on Aug 30 '09
Thanks for critiquing mine! This design has really improved.
The scuba diver driving looks a bit too close to the window though. It's like the bottom of the steering wheel would hit the inside wall of the sub or something. I like the first placement and the shirt color choice is great. |
isawa on Aug 30 '09
I agree about the steering wheel being too close. Out of the two, I prefer the bottom placement, but I think something in between may actually be best.
Retaxus on Aug 30 '09

I cannot see anything that needs to be changed per se - except that you should re-include the other part of the ship under water, you have developed it nicely from its beginning stages up to the current one. This is an interesting concept!
Some of your line work is a bit scratchy. That might be the intended aesthetic, I'm not sure. If it is, keep it. If it isn't, work on it. It's a pretty solid concept altogether. Nice work!
Check out my latest if you've got the time! |
MetalCioffi on Aug 30 '09
really liking the idea and (the left shirt's) positioning. well, bump it up a little bit like some others had mentioned. try making the edges of the waves just splash out (similar to the bottom of the surface, like its a puddle or oil sitting on the surface... that probably doesn't make any sense). the actual art seems a little rough to me still.. it's not bad by any means... but i personally feel it could be a little more sleek. definitely keep the stars and how they curve up, that's a great element.
if you, or anyone else for that matter, have some time i'd like to have some criticism on mine. |
don't have much to say that hasn't been said already - left placement but a little highter, scuba guy and the wheel look a little too close to the inside o the iceberg (does that make sense? they just look kinda flat) otherwise i really like it.
one thing, if you're not going to show titanic under water (which i kind of agree with) then maybe you could try make it a touch bigger? thanks for your commenting on mine |
sausage_moe on Aug 31 '09
so...underwater-titanic like in V3 or no underwater-titanic like in V4???
help me out ppl. cast your votes, since i cannot decide after so many different opinions. for now i'd make the upper part a little bigger and move it a little towards the back of the image, so it appears further away and a little bigger in comparison to the submarine. i will make up 2 or 3 options of how the water is situated on the shirt for the next version. coming up soon... SHOW TITANIC UNDERWATER? YES (V3)? NO (V4)? |

I also like the progression (for the better) of this piece. :) |

sausage_moe on Sep 04 '09
Allright. I changed some minor details (tried to unflatten the scuba-guy, moved the titanic back a little, etc.).
What's really bothering me now is that i can't find a way to end the water at the sides of the shirt...I came up with 2 options, which do not satisfie me, but cannot think of other that would look better. HELP, PLS! It's kinda tricky since one of the 3 colors is the tee-color, thus making every attempt look crappy. thx in advance for all your comments. You've all been a huge help so far! |

But I liked the way you used the water in v4 better. You've been doing this for a long time right =) |
emberplastik on Sep 04 '09
nice idea.. my suggestion is to make the fake iceberg as the top part of a submarine, so you won't need the divers..
Might be better to move the design up on center chest, less stars and sky. Did you use cut out filter on photoshop for the water? looks great! need more brush work on the edges tho. |

this looks great. but i think i prefer option 1. have you thought about having a moon in the sky? i wonder how that would look?

Can you maybe critique mine if you have a chance? It's called Windows, and it's for the Geeks competition. Thanks! :) |

I thought you couldn't re-submit re-worked designs or is it only if something has been rejected? Would it have any impact if the title was the same as the original work? If you re-work a design regardless of rejected/ ended early/ low score, you can re-sub it. It's something they allow the let people try to improve upon past designs. That's where critiques and blogs come in super-handy :) |

Hahaha, I like the concept a lot. It just looks very, well, "cut-out" -- for lack of a better word -- mostly because you clearly used the "cut-out" effect in photoshop.
I'm just a sucker for vector designs myself, even though I can't make one to save my life. Just a difference in personal taste and preference probably. I still love the idea a lot, if this one doesn't make it maybe play around with it some more. I know that somewhere here is a great t-shirt design. Cheers and happy designing! |

I would really love to have some advice on the placement...Especially on how to handle the really horizontal water. Any ideas how to make it look good?
I am still working on the colors (even though this is what it's going to look like, roughly) to bring out that made-of-paper-style a little more.
Thx in advance....
