I'd say rename him "Pessimus" just to ensure consistency, and give the joke that extra half-second to sink in.
thanks i really like that idea... come to think of it.. that's how i've been pronouncing it in my head all this time but somehow missed it...
"Pessimus Prime" it is! :) |

I definitely need to work on the placement and text...
I tried to keep this a simple and fun design...there is some quirkiness to his shape and posture, but I think im okay with that... what do you guys think? oh and colors? i have so many different color versions... from simple 3 colors to this one thats 8 |
Cornflake on Jul 09 '09
looks good. text placement i think is better than the old one. y does that guy keep flickin' me off?
mpeon on Jul 09 '09
loose the text, nice work, maybe just put a broken cube or a flat tire (add tires to the legs)
any help here before I sub any help here too Thanks! |
Yuhki Demers Design on Jul 09 '09
yeah i think the idea is strong enough without the text and the broken tires is a great idea
thanks for the suggestions... yeah.. im not a big fan of the text either... but most people didnt get it without it... Maybe if i just put "Pessimus Prime" no other text..
Ill try to draw in some tires and see how hey look.... |
ok, ok so i changed this around ab it... I didnt go with the Tire suggestion.. but I was still able to eliminate a lot of text... Hopefully its easier to read this way... I like this version a lot. :) What do you guys think?
Should i lose all of the text? Also do you like the T-shirt colors i chose? Any other suggestions? |
Ricki Jane on Jul 09 '09
I like it, but yeah, maybe loose the text. Threadless prefers no text if at all possible. Is it just me or is the thought bubble a bit square? Maybe it's fine. Nice shirt colours. Good idea!
Please help me out if you have the time! http://www.threadless.com/submission/219225/Green_Eyes http://www.threadless.com/critique/48010/Cowpie http://www.threadless.com/critique/45210/Mushroom_Cut |
Yea I'll prob eliminate all text
RedRobotMonkey on Jul 09 '09
hey you got a transformers in yours too! On blue looks good. I agree, with leaving out the text.
crit mine? |
yea... its such a tie up for the text... but i do want to find a way to leave it and still be good in the design...yea mouth is a bit funky... the hands also seem funky to me so ill probably tweak them up...
Red Earth on Jul 09 '09
I like the idea, i still think it needs work before submitting. The colours are good, on the tees aswell. The text needs to be better incorporated into the design i think, however if you lose it i think the message is lost. I agree with you that optimus still needs a little tweaking to look just right. Its a cool idea and a good design so far, so good luck with it.
Please could you return the favour and critique mine? |
Breaky on Jul 09 '09
Think the idea of half full or half empty can't be translated on a tee without text to get the message clear.
So I think you made it yourself really tuff. I have no frikin idea how to make it work without txt, so if you can pull it off you get the highest vote from me. can you crit mine? |
ok... removed all text, except for "Pessimus Prime" on the Leg .... Also added some halftone pattern to the shadows... and adjusted the mouth slightly...
Its so hard to keep the meaning without text... now go ask someone whos never seen it if they "get" it....and get back to me! IDEAS? SUGGESTIONS? LOVE? |
yea... pessimism is so hard to capture visually without text....
what if i had put "1/2 empty" or "half empty" in the bubble with the glass.... would that help, hurt, no effect? any ideas? |
ughh i need some sleep ive been working on this all day...
I really get the pessimism, also without the glass. I like the idea, maybe a little bit more detail?
Can you comment on my submission? Thnx! |
Tigerbill on Jul 10 '09
I like this illustration a lot and I think you've got an awesome shirt in the works.
That said, I think you need to let go of the 'pessimism' thing. Pessimism is a negative view of everything. That Transformer doesn't really express that it feels negative about life-- it looks unsure-- like it can't work out whether it wants to be pessimistic or optimistic (just realised-- 'pessimus' instead of 'optimus'). I would recommend trying to think of a completely different angle-- you've got a giant robot who looks nervous-- there's huge potential there. Maybe move his arms so that he is covering his groin and put a heap of empty oil cans on the ground because he has to 'take a (oil) leak'. If you've got the time, I'd appreciate it if you could score my designs: Never mind the tigers and Pre-loved Kitties |
Thanks you guys...
@TigerBill I dont want to change the whole meaning behind this... Its "Pessimus Prime" because of "Optimus Prime"... to change it would destroy the purpose of this design.. Thanks for you crit. though.. i Guess i have to keep working on it.... |
Skilly on Jul 10 '09
Better, like it best on grey.
ok.. so my original itention, as it shows, was to keep this basic, little detail.. 80's cartoon style.. do you like that or should i do it with more detail?
also any suggestions for pessimism... is this working, yes/no? maybe? should i put "half empty" or "1/2 empty" in the thought bubble with the glass? or is that to much text!? |
Skilly on Jul 10 '09
I'd say sub as is, not sure you can gain much from adding or taking away any more.
bump
ok... im about to upload a new version with "pessimus prime" holding a white flag (surrender flag)... let me know what you think of that idea... and when its uploaded in a few mins please come back to check it out
I made some minor adjustments to his body/perspective.. also got rid of the half empty glass and added a white (surrender) flag...
still needs something doesn't it? Im still thinking about adding some tires on the legs and having one flat tire, that was a good suggestion... or maybe ill put a bomb mushroom cloud in the distant background.... whatcha think? |
BUMP
err2003 on Jul 10 '09
Super sweet!! maybe another element in the background and its good to go!
Tigerbill on Jul 10 '09
Yeah-- this works. The white flag was a good move.
jpole on Jul 10 '09
sweet! sweet sauce! i want that!
Thanks you guys... I have another idea i want to try on here, maybe tomorrow..... also I may re-draw the whole thing and illo it again! well see...
I think it's need to be bigger on tee. The concept is great, but i'm not sure about the execution. Remenber prime comes to monkey - sorry, my english is terrible. If you do a ''bad monkey'' optmus can say ''youre a pessimus prime'' or something like that.
so i made the flag a little smaller andbrought the thought bubble back.. but now with a destroyed pessimus prime in it... what do you think?
Does it have that "Pessimist" feel to it? show it to a friend or sibling see what they think... Also... i was going for an 80's carttonish look... but do you think it needs more detail to be a printed tee? Cause im debating re-drawing the whole thing... |
devran on Jul 11 '09
it has a pessimistic feel to it with its frowned face but if you want to emphasize it more i would recommend you to change the posture -like replacing the robust shoulders with feeble ones- and loose the bubble up there. and i would also go with gray tee.
hmm.. ok.. ill try the shoulders thing... but im afraid if i loose the bubble again everyone will say they dont get it... or he just looks sad... IDK.. im trying!
Jvesuvius on Jul 11 '09
I'd have him sitting on a bench with his head in his hands. The pessimism has to be really in your face i think for it to work. I like the pun. I voted for your slogan about the energon cube.
You could play around with style. A lot of successful T Shirts with cartoon characters change the style from the original cartoon. This has good potential. would you comment on my latest effort please. We'd better fly Thanks! |
Jvesuvius on Jul 11 '09
Actually, don't yet. I haven't uploaded a new one yet!
MKcmyk on Jul 11 '09
like it ... think it is great ...
needs nothing more ... |
Ars Fera on Jul 11 '09
Lol, nice idea, I think the only thing it needs is a shadow, it would give it a little more depth and make it look a little nicer. Other than that this is about ready, nice job!
And if you're not busy, a comment on my first submission would be very much appreciated! |
Yeah! i thought about putting a shadow, then I forgot! but im gonna do it now!
But do you guys really like the thought bubble!?.. im in a toss up with it... |
Skilly on Jul 11 '09
I think it helps reinforce his character, but the bubble itself, from a design perspective, could maybe do with an overall rounder look. Top, bottom & left all run on rather straight lines, instead of a centle outward curve, a la the right. Make sure you fill in all the mini-bubbles too, a couple are blank on the shirt. Keep at it, Lookin' good.
strickenbrow on Jul 11 '09
You might give him a shadow... so that he pops out a bit more and the shirt has some illusion of depth. Very nice.
Will you check out my critique ? |
ok... im currenty working on:
1. changing his shoulders slightly 2. redrawing the bubble 3. adding a shadow |
Tigerbill on Jul 11 '09
Definitely like it on gray. I wouldn't stress so much about the 'pessimism'-- it works for the people 'in the joke' or who get it. If people don't get it, they are still looking at a cool visual.
Added Tires (and flat tires in thought bubble)
Added Shadow (which is a little off, i know, ill fix later) and Re-drew the thought bubble ????? |
Oh.. and i changed the shoulders a bit.. and a few other minor body changes...
BUMP!
Kim456 on Jul 12 '09
Its looking great!
Unsre about the placement as you have it....could you throw it on a model tee so we can see how it sits |
to get the joke more clearer, maybe add an optimist prime next to him to make the contrast stronger, or place pessimus prime on a couch at the psychiatrist.
when he's waving his white flag right now, i don't get the joke immediately that he's a pessimist... i really could use a hand here optimus is one of them... do you know all the others? |
elemenopy on Jul 12 '09
He's more a Defeatist Prime. His body shape should be more down. Right now it's fearful.
Tigerbill on Jul 12 '09
The shadow is a nice touch and I like the improvement to the bubble.
those are good ideas mtths... i try to sketch em out...
but what if... I got rid of the thought bubble... and brought back the "half empty" energon cube... at which point the flag can either stay, so he is surrendering at the fact the cube is "half empty... or I could have him holding the "half empty" energon cube... and based on his sad look and posture it would be obvious hes a pessimist? |
Neuroplastcicty on Jul 12 '09
Alright, here is my crazy idea, and I need you to hear it out.
I understand wanting to keep the red/blue/silver color scheam, but not all prime's use that. now for the crazy part, I want you to color him like Eeyore from pooh. |
haha, i did try an all gray color scheme... but this color scheme helps the joke work more off of "optimus prime" - "pessimus prime"
IMO |
pretty funny...works on grey the best...white flag stands out.
thanks!
Not much new here...
I made the "thought bubble" smaller... also added some distress marks to the demolished robot in the bubble... I added some subtle stripes to the shadow... Also added Megan Fox templates, for the Megan fox fans! ;) I added a slightly thicker stroke to the entire outside of the robot... |
sorry bout the crappy grainy quality...
colours look a bit washed out to me.....or is that what you were going for? think he could do with some shine so he looks more metallic. quite cool though. oh, think u might have to take megan off when you sub it otherwise you may get a decline
I dig the subdued colors, personally, but I can't get over the "Transformers Animated" style to it (the latest transformers cartoon), I've never been a big fan of that style while still (the cartoon looks good when in motion)
I think you've found a good balance with the surrender flag and him thinking about his demise. The only other thing I can think about that fits the theme would be a complete redraw. Prime with a helmet that looks like an emo haircut, tight girl jeans (or the robotic visual approximation), headphones etc. |
Yeah.. I also like the subdued colors...
And the style (era) "transformers" I was going for was old fashion 80's.. I've never seen the new ones...and that def. was'nt what i was trying to go for... :/ anyways.. im not too sure bout the "redraw" idea... thanks though! :) |
Skilly on Jul 12 '09
Nah, stick with the colours, gives it a proper 80s vibe (I thought that was the style you were going for. Addition of the tyres was the right move. Almost as right as the Megan Fox preview pics! Personally, I'ma click on the sub now button, great strides have been made....
I shall shamefully pimp my critique's latest concept change here for feedback, though I am unworthy |
jpole on Jul 12 '09
sweet.. i like the changes.
Neuroplastcicty on Jul 12 '09
Adding the name really helps and doesn't look that bad.
My only suggestion would be fixing Megan Fox's toe thumbs. |
err2003 on Jul 12 '09
great concept.. and your executing it great! keep it up!
thanks you guys!.. im still wokring on it, im not satisfied yet :/
BUMP! |

Ike Lawliet on Jul 13 '09
The design is interesting. I'm not sure if you'd be able to read Pessimist Prime on a shirt, however, since it's a bit small. Perhaps if it spread somewhere else along Prime so as to be more legible.
If you don't mind, would you look at my Panda? |
yeah im still not sure about the text, its been a struggle since V1!
Skilly on Jul 13 '09
Hmm, I'd say you might just need "Pessimus", not Pessimus PRIME.
It's obviously a play on transformers, and the only one with an -us name I can think of is Optimus Prime, so the "Prime" is tacitly implied without having to be overtly stated. You'd need less space for that, so if you dropped his arms a little bit, it should fit comfortably on his chest or belly. Or on his forearms too, if you (re)move the blue bars? |
hmm.. i dont know... it will be easier for them to get with "Pessimus Prime" and im already have trouble with the joke... I don't want to make it any more complicated.. but ill see what i can do with the text...
the colors are slightly different.. the darkest color now being a "dark blue"...
Also added the rainy cloud.. im not convinced with it though.. and tried another placement for fun.... ? |
so IF i decide to keep the cloud/rain should i get rid of the thought bubble... or is that the storngest piece for the joke?
also what do you guys thnk of the cloud? now that im looking at it.. that one curve at the top left is upside down and is really bothering me... also your thoughts on adding a very simple background (city/ forrest/ or multiple clouds...)??? |
Risdiansah on Jul 14 '09
hahhaahhaha this is funny... i don't have much to say about it... honestly i like it
Good job! :D Thanks for your comments on mine ;) |

oh and colors? i have so many different color versions... from simple 3 colors to this one thats 8
