Here is my second design (quick follow up from my first). Once again, would be great to hear your opinions on this one (good and bad...would like to think I've got a good chin to take heavy comments! X-D). I know the title is totally weak!

Another update on one of my critique designs. I have removed the clouds and added stars (do they look like stars?). Again, feedback on this will be super duper useful or a rating to see if I'm on the right track with my designs. All suggestions will be returned with a nice hug or a cuppa coffee...you can choose!! :-P

P.S - Don't know why but if the background defaults as white, it should be blue...suggestions on how to correct this will be appreciated.

have you downloaded the submission kit yet? it will come with a variety of shirt colors to pick and place your image on.

use the dark yellow to fill in the darker areas around the mouth and eyes, so the expression is more readable.

This is funnyand good. An angry moon is ok when people are all over it as would anybody who gets messed about with. Look forward to seeing smily moon but I feel you should take this as a start to a series depicting the moon in different phases and moods all on one shirt design.

I have placed this on a t-shirt template (cheers for that Neuroplasticity). For the background, this is what I was originally working on. I have made the moon happier (I hope it doesn't look too creepy!) and also with a wee bit more detail.

Here is the next version of this design…I have made the changes based on Emmkitt and Guiw’s comments (thanks again!) and shrunk the placement of it, rounded off the eyes and shifted the position. I have also tweaked the guy’s hand who is hanging off from below as it looked a little bit off. Not the most significant changes but hope it adds to the improvement

That looks much better since v1. The dark blue background is really nice. I might like it located a little right of center, but I'm not sure whether that would look better or not. I think it is important that, on your final submission, you put a version which shows the design on one of the shirt model people. It makes a huge difference when I'm looking at designs if I can see what it will more or less look like on a real shirt. It is pretty amazing.

I don't know a lot about flash, but you should be able to edit the picture in photoshop, and then import it back into flash.

Guiw - Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it with white but I think i'll stick with the yellow. With the outline of the moon face, i think a brighter colour is better.



I have submitted a flash template version of it. The resolution may be a little low this is the first time that i have done this so first thoughts would be good.

Definitely on the dark shirt... the light one looks a bit silly since it's a nighttime scene. Looks really good. I was just looking back over the older versions and I love how the design has evolved. The moon looks great with the new eye and mouth and stuff. Awesome job! :D

Definitely on dark blue. And I'd advise having stars cover the whole shirt (not sure about the sleeves being covered tho, I think that would make it a belt print). And having them be more randomly placed like constellations rather than almost a pattern.



I'm also wondering if centering the moon is the best placement. It may look nice off-centre. But that's just my two cents :)

Thanks for your suggestions and comments. You (and also Libster) are completely right with the dark T-shirt. I tried it with the other blue and it didn't sit right. Just forgot to take it off in my last version!



My initial thought was to increase the no. of stars but my main focus was for the moon and the people. The constellations is a great idea but the stars are only a filler to the dark background.

I'm feeling like it is near the stage for submission. Would still love to hear more opinions on this one. Please note that despite the current version having two t-shirt possibilities, I will only choose the dark navy for sub.

About the stars around the tee... You could add them randomly around, not that they need to have the same distance from each other, you could make one near other, and one very far from another, randomly... dont know if it'd work though...



About what bm38art said, I like the positions, I think they're ready to go! But if you want to do something different, maybe if you added someone at the bottom of the tee, with a rope, aiming at the moon like "I'm going up guys".... Maybe it could add something to the tee and use a bit of the bottom...

Dont know though... In my opinion its already pretty cool!

I'm a wee bit indecisive over the additional person from below...if i decide to add somebody then i will increase the stars. I may also chance it and sub the design....not sure. Since the design is placed quite large on the t-shirt itself, it kinda looks to me like its high above the sky and the ground if you know what i mean.



Will need to think about this...people's two pennie thoughts still welcome as always (i'm about 70-30 about subbing it next week).

Fun design, maybe you can try varying the size of the stars to create some depth.

Dark color tee for sure!

The only thing about the design that I would change is the moon's nose. It's a little out of proportion, just shave off a little from the bottom so it's not too small though.

As for the presentation, the closeup of the silhouette people panel confused me a little.. maybe instead of having them the way they are now, you can have close up squares of them, almost like windows.

This is close to subbing though, great job :)

Here is my first ever attempt on a t-shirt placement for a model pic (man, I suck on PS!)! Took me a a while to figure out and create this mock...don't know how good this looks!



Georg - thanks for the tip! Still not the best mock presentation though (quite pixally!). For those who have submitted design experience, would really love to hear your opinion on how to improve this. Again, still learning the ropes on this so would be really grateful for your feedback!

Hey Orange.



Not sure how you have edited the photo. Did you paste your design from flash into photoshop? The template photo's should be fine, just make sure when you are saving the photo for web you do so as a jpeg high and it should be ok. I read you didn't have photoshop, you could always download a trial version.

You should just leave the model photo the size it is - don't scale it up or down or it will look pixely like this. Then lay your design image over the model tee in PS. this tutorial might help.

I have taken your advice Chris and Scare (thanks!). I have used the template photo, pasted my design and haven't altered the photo at all. I noticed that the Navy Blue photo are smaller than the rest, maybe this is the reason why its so small?



Brightwood - your feedback on the PNG was great! The design looks way crisper! About your other suggestions, i'm not actually going to make any further adjustments to the design, as i've been working on it for a while now. I just want to submit it now. I do appreciate your input though. I have already scored your design too! Nice!

In my latest version, i have included a slide which shows a close-up of the silhouettes of the people. If it was printed on a normal t-shirt, i think that it will be noticable. With your nose comment, I think the moon will look a little odd if it was taken away. so I'm going to leave it on.

Its funny, nobody else has commented on not being able to see the people. Previous comments have suggested sticking to a darker BG. I have tried other t-shirt colours but in my own personal a darker blue is more effective (see version 6 for an alternative).



I did think about adding yellow highlights but in the end decided to leave this as it is. Thanks for your input!

Here is the latest version (and I'm hoping last) of this design. I have decided to give two t-shirt colour options (dark and light blue). I'm hoping that these compliment this design.



Once again, more opinions on the colour options would be great. On the verge of subbing this possibly next week...unless you peeps have any other suggestions (prefebly on colours of t's ).

Do you lower the opacity of the design layer when you do the mock up? If so you're doing it wrong. That's why the moon looks greenish.

I have been using this for my mock ups (I even sent him a message to clear up the final few steps in the processs as it was very ambigious). It doesn't mention anything about the opacity. I like to think i followed this to a 'T' (:-D ). Any chance you can tell me where i can alter the opacity?

Sorry for requesting things which may be simple for most but once again, I don't know all the terminology used in design plus, i'm a super noob at all this. :-P

George - Do you know if the PS opacity levels are pre-set ? I've never actually adjusted these since using the program and was wondering if this is automatically adjusted when you are creating a mock up using Kwamebusia's method e.g. if you mask something etc.?

Hey, now that's something I haven't done before, agrimony! Good idea! I usually just paste it up on the shirt, and lower opacity a lil'... No one's ever called me out on placement before. But anyways...



Yeah, I think it's a nice start for designing, and you should complete it until you know you've done everything you can to make it something someone would want to wear. Like asking people you know to take a look at it, and see if they'd wear it.

Agrimony - yeah, the layer is set to multiply. Basically, you have the top layer (tshirt outline), the design in the midle and the photo as the last layer. This is Kwamebusia's method. Seems to work very well for him.

Next version! I hope that this is better than the previous version. Last version's mock up design was too green. I have adjusted the opacity and brought out the true colours of the moon.



Hope this sits well. Please let me know what you peeps thing....I can see the subbing finish line, its ever so close that I can almost taste it!! :-P

This looks better... But you're NOT suppose to mess with the opacity. But I know what's wrong. The layer above your design (the one you change levels on) should be gray.

Just do this:

1. Ctrl + U on that layer

2. drag saturation to the far left.



But yeah anyway... I'd say this is ready to be submitted soon :)

Man Georgeossen...your advice is priceless!! Keeping a note on all these tips for the future! In my previous version, I actually never played with the opacity levels (because I didn't know where the option was!). However, it does make a big difference even if you drop it slightly. Maybe this is a quick fix for such situations?



I have tried your tip and it makes a small difference to the overall design on the tshirt.I think i'm gonna re-create a new presentation and then make this the official version for subbing!

yeah your problem was that the top layer was blue in the photo when you set to multiply. you need the top layer in black and white when you set it to multiply.



easy way is to greyscale the top layer, and then use brightness/contrast or curves to make the whites whiter and the blacks darker

After 14 versions of this design, spending much of my time tweaking this and taking on board the critique that all you fine folks have left for me and learning from techniques and suggestions on the overall process….this damn thing has been declined!!!!



I won’t lie to you about feeling totally bummed about this. Although I never really thought that it would be chosen for a t-shirt, I’d honestly thought that it would at LEAST go through the scoring round. Threadless’s info regarding decline reasons seems to shoot itself in the foot. One of my main things that I have noticed that some of the designs which go through the scoring round aren’t really suitable for children from 13 years onwards, even though this is stated in their website.



Absolutely NO DISRESPECT to the designers out there but I have scored quite a few in my short time on Threadless and I must say for some designs which IMO should have been selected and approved, there are others that I really do not understand how it got through the scoring round. An example of one which stands out for me is one called Payback (artist Guiw) which I thought would certainly get through. Instead, we have other designs which I’m sure did not go through extensive rounds and versions in critique stage (I have many in mind but won’t mention these).



I guess this is just my rant (as I’m sure many others have done in the past) about being rejected and should stop whining about this loss. Have to get it out of my system at least…..



I want to take this opportunity to thank all you people who helped me with suggestions, ideas, changes, modifications etc. etc. etc. Special thanks goes to Gergosson, Guiw, Agrimony, Brightwood, Jebs, Libster and all others who left your mark on this design. Learned a lot on the overall process, so this is very, very valuable for me.



My lesson learned from this is that maybe (for me personally), spending so much time on the critique stage is not really healthy. In my case, all the hard work just left me with experience, knowledge but no score! :-P

So sorry to hear you got declined too. I know how you feel, and I totally understand the urge to rant. Some of the designs I've scored (NO DISRESPECT INTENDED) seem like the designer threw them together in two seconds, so I'm feeling a little bitter about my own rejection after spending so much time on my design.



As far as resubmitting a design goes, I think you can do it as long as you make significant changes to the design. I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere on this site, but I can't remember where. If I were you, I'd keep working on this one in your spare time. That's what I'm planning on doing with mine.

I'm really new to this too and only have two designs that are here in critique. Heck, I've even made the noob mistake of posting links to my crits on Submissions!! I really think the critique section of the site is a wonderful tool. What I'm trying to say is: I don't know what y'all's plan is for these designs after the decline, but I don't think that any future progress should be kept away from here. (It almost sounds like that's what I'm reading - I just want to make sure it isn't)



It's an invaluable resource, because of the knowledge and experience that is shared and gained. It has helped these works so far and I'm certain that it will continue to be an aide with these and other work that you produce.



So, keep plugging away, at new work, at older work, and even at the stuff that you need to set aside like you said, and come back to. But please don't abandon it!!

Thanks for your comments above. My fingers started typing away once I got the decline e-mail and once I start, I can’t really stop (I type quite quick!). I’ve slept on it now and still feel pretty raw but nowhere near as frustrated as yesterday. Libster, it’s good to hear that you share the same point of view and I’m glad that you will be plugging away at your designs, despite the decline.



Berbs – my experience with the critique has been really invaluable to me, not just looking at how designs can be re-worked, but also techniques used (e.g. mock-ups). My view on the critique system is a positive one overall. However, as this was my first ever design which I have spent much of my time on, I guess that what I’m saying that in my case, the hours put into it does not justify the decline. Yeah, its sour grapes on my part. I should really get off my high horse and take it on the chin!



I’m not saying that I’m going to abandon this one. I already have some other ideas on how to reuse this into a different theme. My only gripe is that I spend so much time on this that I neglected other ideas that I had. Finding the balance is quite tricky, especially with the limited amount of time I have to play with. I’ll keep this on the backburner but going to move on to others for now. Thanks for your support Berbs!
