one question. will the surroundings be in a forest or a snow field or something else? Because then that effects the dirt path he makes by walking and also the way the animals scurry off.

umm not sure yet, maybe Ill draw in a background, Im thinkin somewhere in the safari, to have more wild animals there

safari bg is a smart move, because all the animals in the design ^ already are caught there... maybe add some jars with water to have some fish/whales collected as well?

might also be too much... don't know.

(water + whales) ooh that would be cool, Ill try and upload a different version by tonight!

can't wait to see how this will come allong, the safari would be a nice setting, or maybe the jungle!

This reminds me from a story from my childhood, but I can't remember what it was!!

I really love this idea and just finished checking out your past designs and all I can say is - WOW. Can't wait to watch this thing develop into a masterpiece. I really like MTTHS idea above about the jars... think it could be awesome if that stick he was holding was a little longer and bowed at the tip because it had a jar with a whale on it that was weighing it down or something and the water inside was splashing around.



Super cool... and you're an amazing artist!



Also, if there is a background I think it would be fun to accentuate his hugeness by making trees no bigger than waist high.

here is a more kid version of it, with great suggestions from tless supertar Phil, so its kinda reverse this time around, instead of him capturing the animals he's replacing/planting new animals because some are extinct

Hmm... I'm kind of torn between the two options here... I really like the theme of "The Collector", in which case I think he should be doing just that. But also like the idea of him sort of redistributing the animals to the planet....



Either way, I think that's a giant sea turtle you have up in that jar and that is great!

haha ok one more version, the other one was too friendly for me, so instead the guy is collecting the animals but swapping them out with monsters and other things, or you guys think its egtting too confusing, maybe Ills tick with the first one?

Ha! Damn you work fast! It seems to be that if anyone could pull off a complicated idea like this, you can, so I say go for V3!

I don't know alex, I like the simplicity of thought in V1, collecting things rather than collecting and swapping them out. Also, the collector character in the narrative might be better portrayed by an alien exploring earth and collecting specimens, wizard or witch gathering potion ingredients or something like that. Right now I'm getting ogre, and if that's the case, he's gathering snacks :P Cheers!

snacks... maybe you can impale a few animals on a large pole as if they where on a brochette??



I see him as a giant rather then an ogre, because he is so huge compared to the elephant.



I also like the simplicity of v1, you can always go back to that drawing if it gets a bit too crowded.

I would say v1, It’s easier to understand, in my opinion v3 is too much overloaded (could work tho).

I think Ill start with v1 and then if it looks like it might work, Ill work in the weird monsters he put on the floor

hm u have to make it more clear that those are animals in the jars i think. right now im seeing it as pictures of animals on the labels of the jars?

I'm curious to see how you attach the jars to the stick. When I round up small varmints in jars I throw them all in a net

I like the idea very much. Maybe the collector could have a collector's kit on him, like a set of jars put in a row on his sack... Just supposing.

Looks good so far. Think you should stick to just having him collecting animals as having him releasing monsters too could look a bit confusing at first glance.



also maybe you could give him a cool belt with loads of stuff hanging of it, eg magnifying glass, ropes, nets, illustruated encyclopaedia of animals.......

Can you critique my new version of Castle of Sand? Hand drawn this time!

Amazing illustration all the way down to the bottom of his coat... then unfortunatly you loose it a little with the legs, notillustration wise but just position. If the right foot is on his toes then for him not to be falling over the left foot will need to be about to place its heal down. Sorry to be annoying but i think its a major point. Can't wait to see the rest of the illustration and colours!!

I have to agree with Standz. This is amazing (I am so jealous of your skills!), but the left foot is not quite at the right angle. I suspect it might be because you're running out of paper that you've (unconsciously?) squashed the leg a bit.

what type of pen do you use on the linings?

I use the micropens mostly like .08 and .5 and applying preassure etc, and for smaller details like a .2

One more thing. His left hand fingers are on backwards. We should see the back of his hand. Or else his thumb should be on the other side if he's scooping up the critters instead of grabbing them.

This is looking awesome man! Just watch that hand on the right, it's looking a little wonky to me - seems like the fingers should be overlapping from the angle we're looking.

and extend top of the thumb a little so it's apparent what angle we're looking at (this would lessen confusion like Francesa, who saw it as backwards).

Regarding the left hand:

Your drawing is correct if we were looking at the bottom side of the troll's hand. But the rest of the troll is seen from above (looking down on the top of his head, down at his face, down at the top of his feet). Why would we switch views at that one point when the troll is reaching down as well?

I really admire your work. I wish you would return to this one.

the hand doesnt look right but i dont think because you have drawn it backwards or anything. the problem is the huge curving gap between the thumb and index finger that makes it a tad wonky. I really like the idea here!

Heh, looked at the critique without checking the creator, but instantly knew it was you. Looking good, with all that mass of hair and beard, I'd be a bit tempted to have a few animoos (that's the new word for animals, use it) have their heads or tails poking out.

Fingers are messed up on that hand. the finger next to the thumb looks like the pinky. other then that finish this! I cant wait to see it done. Plan on making an artbook at all?

great stuff so far, i was just curious how you get the line quality that you do on final designs, it is something i have trouble with in the digital medium, do you just live trace traditional art? thanks for any help, i got ideas and talent, just not enough know how.

I just scan the linework i do by hand into photoshop, and clean it out
