This is only a rough version. Will blend black in more with tee if I think I'm going to submit it.

Nice illustration, but I think it needs something more to get votes - a joke or a secret perhaps.

Thanks for your comments! There are eyes in the windows and the door of the house has a smile like a clown. But i will have a look at possibly reworking the fence.

cool.

I definitely agree on the one color white on black. That's what will make this work. If you can finish each line of the tree trunks and branches off at corresponding lengths at the ends of the print, it would aid much with the design blending with the shirt and eliminate the framed look.

If you were thinking about extending the fence below, I'd do the same with each fence rod. Make them fewer and/ or smaller at each end. I would avoid having any lines actually fade, though. Just stopping them at certain lengths at the ends of the illustration will do a lot for this. I really like it!

This looks cool, it would be good to see what it would look like on a person. I agree with the others that this should blend into the colour of the tshirt rather than to that brown/black ink.

Crit mine?

Could we see a close up of it? Maybe without the tshirt? Having a tough time spotting detail.

Looks nice, maybe try to add some more story or catch to it, to make it do really good, like maybe something is happening in the windows like horror scenes or something. There are eyes in the windows and the door of the house has a smile like a clown I didn't really see that, if that's what you're goin for, maybe make it subtle but more visible. Keep it up! :D
T-Lou
T-Lou on May 26 '09
Yeah I am going to make eyes in the door and work on the smile - so you can tell it's a clown face. The original sketch is huge and much easier to see. Thanks for the comments.

might have all been said already, but lose the brown and leave just the white line. i would also make the drawing a lot bigger so that it covers the shirt from bottom to top - it not far off at the mo and maybe it's just the brown thats amking it look that way, but currently it kind of looks stuck on while i think you could really make it part of the shirt.

nice drawing though, can't wait to see the next version.

please can you vote on my elephantthanks!

It weird...it didn't look brown until i posted it here - must be the callibration on my monitor. The drawing is actually on black paper - so may need to fix the curves on it or try and make vector :(

Thx for the comments.

I would just like to see the branches extended a bit at the sides so that the overall design is less boxy. Nice feel to this though :)

   mismonaut on May 28 '09
If you have photoshop, here's one way to get rid of the brown.

Make a new layer.

Use the eyedropper to select the shirt color.

Paint over the house, using that color.

In the "layers" menu, change the setting of your new layer from "normal" to either "hue" or "color." (Try both and see if one works better. I can't remember the difference at the moment.)

There are other ways to do it, of course. (I guess you could also just change the setting of your drawn layer from "normal" to "luminosity"?)

Anyway, try that and see how it looks.

Brightwood and mismonaut: I just wanted to say thank you for your really cool comments! Actually I had only really "plonked" the artwork on there to gauge comments as to whether I should develop this further? I use photoshop, illustrator and freehand.

It's funny, I've been doing this stuff for years (too long) - and everyone has a different way of doing things - but I always appreciate helpful comments from people. That's how I learned most of my skills through my working life too :D

I'm going to try all your suggestions!

I like this, would like to see the design blend in with the colour of the shirt. I see you mentioned you were planning on doing so, looking forward to an update.

Can you help me out with a critique please and thanks.

Cool. I agree with some who've said this already... maybe it could cover the entire shirt? Then again, no, you'd have to cut off part of the top or bottom. Sigh. If only a longer shirt.

This is a beautiful drawing, though, you know.
barbs1978
barbs1978 on May 30 '09
I would suggest that you place some shadow insede, but you already said that the house itself will be a clown, so... just waiting for the next version.

About photoshop, it is right that everybody works with ir differently. Me, for instance. When I want something black, I open the color picker and write: 000000 at the "#" box (for web colors). If i want white, i write ffffff.

Sorry to ask, but, If you have time, please help me finishing mine.

T-Lou, I just saw your link on my blog that you put up a few days ago. God!, that blog's from Feb. '08. I probably never would have gone back to it if TTU didn't bring up your idea of a critique club. Anyway, late getting here and I'm going out right now, so I'll drop by tomorrow. Cheers!

T-Lou if you're going vector, there's a great tutorial put up by KDLIG, a great designer here. She left a link to Mike Mitchell's awesome line work maker, You can put it into the photoshop action folder and just press a button to separate line from background. It's amazing.

Anyway, great illo, love the style, kind of comic book gothic, ha-ha. I think you're on the right tract, adding eyes, smile etc. I see the smile on the door but I never would have without your comment. The middle spike of the gate really gets in the way. The trees do seem to box the design, maybe some shrubs at the base to expand the lower part of the design. Cheers!

Great illustration. I can kinda see the "clown smile" on the door, but's still too subtle. Maybe you can add in an actual creepy clown waiting at the gate (of course, "creepy clown" is a redundant, isn't it?).

Nice illustration T-lou, but i have to agree with some of the others. It needs an extra "something". Maybe you can add faces in the windows and something happening with glow ink?

Could you possibly critique my new one (in sketch phase right now), Psychedelic Soup?

I personally dont thnk it needs anything. I think it just needs to blend in with the tee color and thats pretty much it. You can easily do that if you use photoshop or flash. i dont know about illustrator cause im not very accomplished at it. However, you can if you want, extend the design of the trees at the top to go right/left. Its a 5 in my book in either case :) But only if it conforms with the tee color.

I'd appreciate your vote on my design, Hope. Please do check all the colors. Thanks :)
Angelista
Angelista on Jun 03 '09
love it but maybe you should have the building slowly fading into the colour of the tee so it looks more whole...
Grasp the math Sumas Vijay.
I say make a ghost type thing peeking out of a window. Then it'd be super duper "fun"

It'd be cool if you commented on this one, and this one!

like the perspective. blend the design as you and anyone has suggested. maybe add someone entering the gate or something or a person behind the bars of the gate.

Love it. Great design. Maybe it's because I'm a superglowaholic, but maybe you could put spectral people in superglow in 1 or 2 of the windows. Only my opinion. Other than that and the border blending you mentioned, great job!
