I like this a lot -- the shadows on the body of the gorilla are really nice, they add a lot of dimension to the illustration. Maybe try adding a subtle background of some sort? Palm leaves/jungle greenery?

It looks good as is.. but maybe could use some of that extra somethin? story? settting?.. like.. i notice Fatheed always seems to add scene/staged elements ... i guess for more context... but I think its great!

I almost feel like it might be better if you had the shirt image of the chimp actually riding the gorilla. Perhaps led on by an electronic banana around the racetrack.

I remember many of Norman Rockwell's illustrations being figures on a white field. He said if you had all that was necessary, why risk adding more and losing the strength of the idea? as a shirt... maybe some jungle treetops in one color up around the neck far above this design? I love it just the way it is.

If you're looking for a simple background ... a wooden fence (like at a race track) might look interesting? I'm not entirely sure it even needs a background, but it's worth exploring.



As far as other background suggestions goes, maybe a distant horse stable with a race track fence? Or distant bleachers (the rows of seating), or a ticket booth? Maybe even some tickets littering the ground?

Fence is good maybe a grandstand in the far background. Anyway, big improvement over the last one, the line work, textures and detail are great. Cheers!

I dig this man, but you have lightsource disagreement between the gorilla and chimp. The gorilla has a strong lightsource, but the chimp doesn't have as strong or the same direction. Outside of that it's pretty sweet.

i really love this! the only thing that isn't racetrack about it is that you've got a western saddle on the gorilla. racing saddles are always english style.



barrel racing uses western but the riders usually dress in cowboy attire.

those real racing saddles are really tiny!

i'll check it out if i can re-work the western saddle to a more racing thing..

changed the western saddle for a proper race saddle as Smusi earlier suggested...



also gave the little gibbon a jockey whip

Just come across your design now - very cool. I only have three wee suggestions... There's something not quite right with the gibbons arm reaching up with his back - maybe get rid of the few sketchy lines on his back below that arm so there's no indentation? And 2nd: perhaps more tension on the rein where gibbon is pulling? And darken the shadow underneath them a tad more to really ground them. Good job!

The saddle and blanket are great, love the texture and shading. Maybe the gorilla's butt should extend a bit more over the back leg now that you have the smaller saddle, don't know for sure. Other wise, awesome illo and ready to go. Cheers!

And maybe thicken the back legs? They look a little to thin and out of proportion.

Great job... like the kahki shirt and orange combo. Perhaps you might curry extra favour with extra witty details... maybe a banana logo on the jocky for a sponsor or something better.. have you explored colours on the saddle patch?

I still think the fence looks a bit odd. The illustration style doesn't match the more hand-drawn look of the Ape and ... apette. I dunno, this is a really solid design, and definitely something I'd grab if printed, but the fence still seems a bit odd.

maybe i should draw them by hand instead of doing them in illustrator... i'll try that tomorrow. it's the best way to get the styles the same.

Really nicely drawn! and the wip has gone in a pretty nice subtle adjustments and improvments.

my favorite kind of shirt, just a nice picture, not a lame pun, unless there is a pun.. in which case its still great time to subby sub!

Extra special illo, ready to go. Maybe just a bit more white (less gray) in the glint of the gorilla's eyes, more alert and raring to go? Anyway, sub this greatness and may you break 3.40 and receive over a 100 joyful comments :P

The only thing that I just now noticed is that the Gorilla's face doesn't have any shading. Not sure if will be possible to add shading effectively on such a small space, but it may be worth trying. Great design all around.

Well yeah, mtths, the off-white color you've got right now works really well, the more I Look at the overall shirt, the more obvious it becomes.



I'm just interested to see what it'd look like on a shade of green, or a blue - just for curiosity sake.
