Hello there. Hm, I think the matches needs a face, with some facial expressions, because they're "boxing" each other. Also, maybe some "whoosh", or rather, action lines around the arm areas to show more action? Hope this helps (:

I tried putting a face on it but i just feel like it doesn't work.. Maybe because i'm not sure how to draw faces for Matches, lol, can anyone give me some tips on how i should draw the face?

I added some anime elements, as in, I followed some anime facial expressions. That was how I did my design. Maybe you could take a look at these links:

Thank you so much fat_lip! I'll try adding a face to my match and upload a new version.. Or i might add them to a boxing ring before i make a new one, but i wanna see how the face looks first.

maybe if you could draw in some sort of a spark at the point of impact of the punch...
Or have the guy's head on fire and a really worried expression on his face, which would imply that the friction of the punch lit the match critique mine |

I really like this idea. Another funny scene would be when the ref declares the winner by pullin his arm up, and the loser match is burnt out. Just a thought though. I think it might look better if you added a corner of the ring, behind the one that is getting boxed. keep it up good work.

Yep- sign or banner saying 'Tonight!
Boxing Matches!" I would show some cheering Zippo lighters, candles, maybe a blowtorch for the audience. But that's me. |
|
hollisbrownthornton on Apr 30 '09
I'd accentuate the angles of the arms, especially the punch arm, make it look like a forceful punch..... The flame could possibly be coming from the punch contact, so perhaps move it towards the front.
Please take a look at mine if you have a chance: http://www.threadless.com/critique/42902/Sunset_On_A_Wall http://www.threadless.com/critique/42917/Birth http://www.threadless.com/critique/42942/Beach http://www.threadless.com/critique/43013/VHS |

DinoeNugget on May 19 '09
Okay.. So move the flame forward more towards the punch and accute the angel of the arms so it looks stronger..
Are you sure adding 'Tonight: Boxing Match' is necessary? And also, should I keep the shadow on the ropes or not? |

i think the rope shadow looks weird

Alright, so here's the next version.. Basically, I changed the shadow on the Red and Blue ropes to a darker shade of each colour.. Unfortunately, I couldn't do the same on the white ropes, as it would mean I exceed my 8 colour limit.
|
|
yeah u can try the darker shade, if it doesnt work v2 was fine really.
also your flame looks abit weird coming out of 1 side like that. i suggest engulfing the whole head if you have to have the flame |
|
DinoeNugget on May 21 '09
I can't make the shadow on the white any different though, can I? I've already used 8 colours.
And Hmm.. Interesting idea.. I'll try that and see how it looks. |
|
hm, you actually do have 1 more color you could try, thats using the tee color. if it doesnt work with this tee, you can always use a different tee colour.

Jemooky on May 21 '09
Like the fire, but it looks like the match has a funky hair doo. Do a google image for "fire match" for some references.
Have you thought of removing the black outlines? Might make a difference. Good work. Needs a bit of work, but keep it up. |
|
Jemooky on May 21 '09
A thought: Since one match is on fire, maybe it can be KO'ed on the ground, with the other match celebrating.
|
|
DinoeNugget on May 21 '09
Yeah, I did try it without the outline but it just looked gross over the shirts colour.. And, from all the pictures I've seen on Google, there's a small space between the match head and the flame.. But I'm not sure that would give the right effect on my shirt.
|
|
Jemooky on May 21 '09
How about reversing the gradient. So it goes:
-Red [the match head] -Yellow [the start of the flame] -red [tip of the flame] Or, better yet, you could try giving it a black head. |

And I dont understand what the pencil thing on the bottom of the shirt means? |

pseudofemme on May 22 '09
very cute idea, but for me, a little too abstract. maybe take some time & embellish the ring, at least a little bit, so it doesn't look (shadows & all) like they're standing on the floor next to a fence. also, i agree that the "dead" match looks like a pencil.. make the tip less pointed? and not to be too picky, but maybe the reason people aren't recognizing it as a match is USUALLY in boxing, the previous competitor isn't lying there, dead.
that said, isn't it PUNNY that this could also be called "BOXING MATCH"? sorry. it's early. keep going with this! |
|
i would try make it look a bit more like a ring and work on the match that's on the floor (if it's even necessary there)
also, try lose the gradient - you can make a far nicer and more natural looking flame with halftones i think. i don't like the black on the match head and gloves though which also brings me to the point- are the gloves meant to be additional match heads or boxing gloves, because they look pretty alike at the moment. working on my hamster - any comments for me please? |

About the flame: I think you should point it to the back of the macht head, as it was a reaction of the force. Or in the front. I dont know the best direction, but I think you should change it to look like part of the reaction to the ponch.
About the dead macht, I think it should have a black head, like an used match. Because I dont understand why a piece of a "body" is laing there. Sorry about may poor english. Can you check out mine for advises? http://www.threadless.com/critique/44515/Karate_monster |

What if you had more of a close up view of the match heads and the ring would be more in the background. As the match head is being hit a flame is Ignited. I agree the back version is the best version.

Here's a new version. I've taken away the black burns on the face because it looked pretty gross, and I replaced it with wood grain (fasterflame21's idea.. Thanks dude) which made it look a bit more cartoony which is good because I'm not really going for realism in this one, haha!
Also, I've added a flourish off the top of the flame (Also, fasterflame21's idea.. Thanks again!) What do you think? |
|
ilya yas on Jun 19 '09
u could use red for another inner color of the flame...
i actually think the black strokes everywhere are too dominant... and they cues too much distraction and noise in the illo.. in a ring the light comes basicly from everywhere.. so u dont need a -long- shadow.. maybe no shadow at all.. u could add some (camera)flashes in the background.. :) |
|
DinoeNugget on Jun 19 '09
I tried to use a red inner flame before.. It didnt really go very well =(
But thank you for all of those ideas =] I'll definately give them a go ^_^ Thank you so much. |

Okay, so this time i've added the red flame inside the yellow flame on the matches head. I've changed the burn marks on the matches head so they look more like burns and less like lines. And I've added the camera flashes in the background which also help support the shadows.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

|
interesting... it really has come a long way. i wouldnt personally wear it because its too flashy for my taste. but im sure there are others who would..
one thing is that the bar in the foreground seems abit weird as though its not connected to the ropes? |
|
DinoeNugget on Jun 20 '09
Hmm.. I've not noticed that myself, but I could move the bar back a bit and connect it to turnbuckles more.. Maybe that would help.. Or would it be better to move it CLOSER to the turnbuckle? Thanks for the comment btw Agrimony.. I seem to have trouble getting any comments on my shirts, haha!
|
|
i was thinking of closer to the buckles :) heh dont worry.. it takes time. i usually dont like keeping my crits around for too long because i get so sick of looking at it myself so i just finsh it up quickly and sub it heh...

I liked v6 better, actually.

I'm very late to this party. I'm in love with your concept to pun "boxing match" in illo form (very witty) but I think you might be over complicating it. Maybe just a beautifully done match stick, (no arms), with a red boxing glove as it's tip would help convey your concept more simply and without any loss of impact. Sorry to throw this out at the last moment, just ignore if you want, your call.
Anyway, maybe try to calm down the primary colors here. Maybe a brown shade for the ropes (not multi colored) and the padding, rust shades for the match heads and gloves, a darker shade of the tee color (not gray) for the shadows, and I don't think you need the white stars, they pop out to much and they're kind of cliche/clip artish. I guess that would help your design better integrate with the tee and add a bit more attention to the matches. Right now they're fighting (pun intended) it out with the multicolored ropes, and star bursts. Anyway, good idea, just needs some color changes to better ground it to the tee. Cheers! glove match head thought |
|
DinoeNugget on Jun 21 '09
Wow, thank you so much quister! I think that the problem of removing the arms this late in is that I dont think anyone will be able to tell that they are actually matches :( But thank you so much for all of your suggestions! I will definately change the colours and remove the flashes :) I always saw a boxing ring as being the colours I chose, but I will try changing them to the colours you have stated :) Thank you so much again! Its rare that I get any comments, let alone one as detailed as yours! I hope that, with your suggestions, I can help push my design to perfection :)
|
|
They use multi color ropes in the olympics and some professional fights, but really, they're just dark gray, brown in the gyms. Besides you need to interpret things in any way that suits your design's needs. One of the toughest things to do here (you're not on a canvas, you're on a tee) is to integrate design and shirt. In that effort, you might think about doing the ring in black or darker gray lines on the dark gray tee with the match boxer colors popping a bit. Not bright reds and blanched woods, but grayed down reds and wood colors that fit in. Could add some more drama than a lighter color tee and even more wit/sarcasm to your concept. Cheers!

|
Ars Fera on Jun 21 '09
Thanks for the comment!
I would dull down the boxing ring ropes, it definitely competes with the matches. And the flame looks kind of odd detached from the match's head and that it is a duller yellow than brighter like a fire would be. Maybe if you get rid of the extra colors(of the ropes) you will have more for the flame's individual bright yellow instead of having to share it with the wood of the match. I do think the gloves look sort of odd too.. they're too oval-y.. I would definitely use Quister's picture of the glove to help out with that |

Back to the gym! As someone famously never said! For this version, I have completely changed the colours. The shadow has been changed to a darker shade of the tee, the ropes and turnbuckles have been changed to gray, the flame has been changed to a lighter yellow, and the boxing gloves have been completely changed to look more like boxing gloves and less like ovals!
What does everyone think now? |

Cool idea and nice progression.
Would be nice if the character and ropes in the background were a little lighter, to give depth, but that would start adding colours. Not a fan of the shading on the match head and the shading in general is a bit dim. I would prefer to see the background lighter and the foreground brighter. The shadows muddy it a bit at the moment. Maybe a different coloured shirt would bring it up a bit. |
|
BarleyandHops on Jun 22 '09
Nice pun, I always like really punny shirts. I feel like the matchsticks need shadows. Also a match head isnt a perfect oval. This might help: http://www.fotosearch.com/bthumb/IMR/IMR417/IE245-032.jpg
|
|
DinoeNugget on Jun 22 '09

overall a cool design, here's an suggestion, what about if you could see the exact same scene of those 2 matchstick-boxers in the oppposite view on the back of the shirt, means, the matchstick with the "head on fire" would be in the background, just an idea.

@ Emze - Thank you for the comment, I hadn't actually thought of that idea. However, I don't think it will work on my design because it's too busy already and I'm a bit worried about adding any more too it. I'm not sure many people would wear it even now without adding another whole image to the back =( @ JP_designer - Thank you so much for the comment =] I appreciate everyones opinion. I will have a look at your critiques now, however, I feel like I have already commented on them, lol. Does anyone have any changes I can make that won't make it too complicated or over-the-top? |

Dexter Spandex on Jun 23 '09

Good Day!
Looks a LOT LOT better than the previous versions i think you should send this to running the IDEA are great as well as the COLORS one more thing, im i bit confuse about the "beaten match" where is he facing? Goodluck to you! and you have my vote! Cheers! |
|
DinoeNugget on Jun 23 '09
Thats the beauty of it, he's not facing anywhere.. It's dead.. =| Lol, well, burnt out =] But the fact that you know that its a beaten match makes me happy :D Lol.
|
|
homemadeheroes on Jun 23 '09
thanx for the comment :)
def a $5 from me. i think you should submit it |

like the idea and its a nice illo, i would rather see the whole ring contained on the chest of the shirt, with little match people spectators cheering.
|
|
DinoeNugget on Jun 23 '09
Thank you very much, homemadeheroes =]
I've just had a thought.. I am NOT going to ruin my design by putting the ring inside a match box, because I'm happy with the way this looks as it is. But I WILL add some more shading to the ropes because they feel a bit flat. Any more ideas would be very helpful =] |
|
I like the idea... but the excecution is not appealing me too much.
Everything is too big for my own taste. Also, the small burned piece of wood liying on the floor looks more like a half eaten french fry. |
|
Candylands on Jun 23 '09
I like it very original

try adding a little bit more detail to the frontmost pole, and work on the pespective a bit and maybe try using one of the colors to ad some shadowing to the matches
very clever, i love the little burnt bit in the foreground i think the main problem is perspective, work on that a bit really really clever |
|

i really like the idea but i dont know about the placement also you should try a nice mock up to give a more professional touch to your work that would be even more nice also i would try more shading on the matches but its a cool idea!!

charity.ryan on Jun 23 '09
That's really clever. I'd like to see it on a black shirt--the fire would stand out more. And I know this isn't helpful at this point, but I like your earier versions where the ring is not so dominant. I like the action of the matches too.
Whatever you end up doing, I think it's a terrific idea. Thanks for the kind input on mine. :) |

@Justinweidling - He's on fire because he's gettin' his butt whooped.. When you strike a match, what happens? ;) Ahh... Ya see? you def have come a long way
but maybe make the mat blue and a tip is to put it on a model it generally is more appealing mind a commenting? |
|
the loose seal on Jun 23 '09
as to how to half tone. ive found the easiest way to do it. if you are using photoshop is this.
copy the two tones you want to half tone and set one as black and one as white(im sure there is an easier way) do a blur on the black and white image. then go to pixelate under filters and click halftone. set all the numbers for the same value. it will give you a half tone map. apply that to your original image. |

did you lose the backprint in the process, because i don't see it anymore. having the bozing arena cropped like this, asks for continued lines on the back. but maybe you don't need it. i had the same thought as evan, about the thing on the ground. try to add some to it (some match that's trying to put out the flames) otherwise, get rid of it... (or add a lot more) |
|
"boxing match" would have been a better name no?

Wow. You've put a lot into this!
It looks like the fire is tricky. I love the pun concept. Just an idea.. But what if you gave each side some distinctive detail and on the front and back show the point of view from each side.. I don't know if that is clear. As I said, just an idea. |

Looks cool to me, I like the way it looks on someone it messes with the eyes a little, but it makes you look at it a second time, so thats cool.
Good shadows and smooth lines. You got my vote! |

Hey Dinoe, that flame looks great now.
Thanks for commenting on my critiques. If you don't mind me suggesting this in general: check the user who you're commenting on before you add another link to your crit. Adding a link after commenting on someone else's critique is great but some users have several crits up at once - you only need to link to your crit in one of their submissions, not all of them. |

I'm terribly sorry Carixpig, I'll try and be more careful =] Thanks for the heads up! I'm about to submit another version!

Okay, here's a new version.. I've moved the design up a bit and I've added a line of smoke coming from the burnt-out match.. I've also put a single glove next to it.
Opinions? Nearly ready for subbing? |
|
Haeil on Jun 24 '09
I love it, and the only thing I can really ask (and I'm nitpicking), is there a line going through the flame from the match head? It kind of bothers me. But that's being extremely picky and overall I think the design looks fantastic.
|
|
DinoeNugget on Jun 24 '09
yeah, you're right, Haeil.. Its from the rim of the match head cus i jist smudged the layer underneath it, lol. I hadn't actually noticed that but I still have to do 1 more layer where I change the model, i'll do the flame again when i do the new version :) Thank you very much for the comment!

Okay, so here's the final (And I'm hoping last!) version.. I've changed the model so that he has the correct tee on, and I've gotten rid of the line through the fire.
Is it ready to sub yet? |
|
Kim456 on Jun 25 '09
nothing left to say except sub it!
thanks for your crit |

rafles on Jun 25 '09
you can sub it . great work
but on the other hand you can make fire bigger, like on the real match |
|
the idea is interesting but I'm not liking the full coverage print on the tee. This could be fun as a self contained illustration that you could include some crown silhouettes around the outside. Maybe even a Ref of sorts.
Could the Match be fighting a Lighter? This might explain why he keeps losing. |
|
sorry to be so late to the game on those idea. Maybe they could be Tee #2 and try this one on voters first. ;)

Hi ! Thanks for the suggestion! I will try to make another version with your suggestion , to see how it looks. I will submit it later.
Now, about your design: it looks really nice to me! Maybe i agree whit rafles, you could make the fire bigger ( also to comunicate the big desire of winning of the Match). I love the perspective! I think it's really realistic and it works fantastic in the scene, to rise the suspense. |
|
Haeil on Jun 25 '09
I love this! You've come so far from your original design, and it looks great. I say submit!

tnkx for t comments. |

great add-on with the boxing glove on the ground!
after 22 versions, you're ready to go :-) are you gonna keep this title?, also saw someone suggest "boxing matches", wich is also very funny.. either way, go for it! |
|
DinoeNugget on Jun 25 '09
Yeah, I didn't think about the title much until after, lol.. but I think i'll go with 'Boxing Match' cus that's a clever play on words =] Lol.
Anyway, thank you for comments and I will be sure to submit it soon enough =] |

I don't think the fire is cartoony enough it seems to real to fit in with the rest

:'( Can't everyone have one opinion? :'( What should I do about it?
|
|
nsta on Jun 25 '09
Maybe try drawing out the flames and the elbows are a bit odd maybe lose the line down the center
|
|
Maphia Phamily on Jun 25 '09
v22 is the best after your hard work...:)
but i think very hard about this design... whose glove on the ground? that 2 match wear their glove... Is there any participants? need advice for my design |
|
pixls on Jun 25 '09
i liked the flame the way it was, really, it looked better that way, i'm not so sure about the elbow joints on the match in front, they look kinda weird, dunno how i would fix that
it's getting really close! thanks for your comment on mine! |
|
Risdiansah on Jun 25 '09
great idea. If you can make the wood pattern on the stick that would be awesome! And maybe a different color for the floor? Well done!
Please vote for my design :) http://www.threadless.com/submission/217848/Ugly_Duckling Thx |

What about a little more shading on the matches themselves?

Next version.. And I was actually hoping to be done with this a while ago =(
I've changed the flame to make it look more "cartoony" and less real.. And I've gotten rid of the lines on the front-most matches elbows.. Is it ready to submit yet? |
|
Carixpig on Jun 26 '09
You've really done well with the critique tool. Go for it, I think it's ready.

Tigerbill on Jun 26 '09
Hey-- very cool. I like this-- great idea and execution.
Suggestion (take it or leave it)-- I think you should take advantage of having two yellows and shade one side of each matchstick the darker/lighter shade. PS- I appreciate your comments on my design also. |
|
DinoeNugget on Jun 26 '09
Thanks for the comments.. I'll give that a go Tigerbill.. Looks like there's going to be many versions still to come =(

should the broken match be burnt out????? Blackened head and burnt stick (you know how they get thin)
Otherwise looking great! would like your opinion |

i would play with the colours a bit. right now, its too neutral of a shirt.
|
|
DinoeNugget on Jun 26 '09
I've tried using the lighter yellow for shading on the match, but it's too bright and I'm not changing it else we'll just have the same problem we had when I first added the flame.. This being said, I will now Submit this.. Thank you to everyone for all of your help and support, I hope to see all of your votes if it goes through =] Please? Lol.. Thank you

OK this is just imho, but would u hate me if i said i like graphic in the very first version? I think the interraction between them in the last version is good - but i think the boxing ring is distracting. If u could incorporate the flame, etc in the first version it would look a lot cleaner.
Nice art tho! |
