I was thinking of putting the above frequency chart in with the design. Too much?



PS the brain (in green) was in critiques a few weeks ago as "think green" but I couldn't get it together for the green comp.

Hmm I think this would actually look better a bit more simplistic. More line artish. And I don't think the brain needs the face either. This has a kind of crazy feel to it and even the brain looks stressed.



and you could always list those on the sleeve. Or in a bottom corner. It has been done before.



Cool idea though! would be cool to see what you do next.

tawmie, I don't know, if I take the eyes off all I've got is a brain with headphones when the idea here was to make a brain into a face/person.

sumocloud, adding facial features kind of defeats the purpose of the brain being a face unto itself.

wow, this is an improvement over your green brain i must say :) And i agree with putting in the frequency chart. the background fade out is looking a tad weird though.. if you continue working on this that is :)

if you keep the the beams around the brain, try to rotate the \/\/\/ according to the angle that line is in.. now it's done in a square. placement will be interesting with this one... just in the center?

Is this character just too ugly to wear? I've put a lot of time/work into it but if it's just creeping people out maybe it's not worth going forward. Thoughts?

i am kinda creeped. but intrigued at the same time. i would say the waves should transition/fade out a little more evenly and the glow around the brain might not be necessary...

Why not just put sound waves in the background. Make them like you'd see on an oscilloscope and horizontal and do a gradation from relaxation to improve learning.

I like the brain face (after an initial freak-out response of a millisecond or so). Make the mouth just a tiny bit more emphasized.

danno, Fran, thanks. Agree the glow can go and I'm going to try the oscilloscope pattern, see what happens.

I could see having the eyes closed, that might give a meditative/listening aspect to the face. I think I also need to see the division between the 2 hemispheres of the brain. Even with the eyes closed, I think the shapes will make it look like a face. I could also see see some different colors in the different areas of the brain, like in a CT scan, like the music/sound is activating different parts of the brain. As far as the creep out factor goes, I'm not creeped out. I think it is important to do work we like and believe in, rather than always trying to play it safe. I like this design a lot. Nice work as always!

Thanks for the suggestions and encouragement mreisel. The eyes closed makes perfect sense. I'm hesitant to split the hemispheres, it took me hours to alter the split to make the face visible. I'm not sure you would see it if I put it back in. Anyway, I'll get to work on the next V and see what happens.

yeah i definitely like this a lot better than v1

i like how i can still see the face there too, even without the eyes

I think the face should be emphasized just a bit more - a tiny bit brighter and darker on the features.

Love the idea behind this and the illustration is top notch. Regarding your question on the original post (about including the frequencies in the design) - I really like that idea. Reckon you could do it in a subtle way - maybe work it into the EEG lines at random points.



Also (and you may be doing this anyway) I think the EEG lines would look wicked stretched around the shirt (though perhaps make them a tiny bit more space out then they are at present as it might get a bit much). Don't know whether you're more of a PS or AI kinda guy but it might be nice to do the EEG lines as vectors and give them a cleaner look - might work nicely against the more photo-real brain illustration.

Thanks all. I agree Francesa, especially after M450's comment, the face needs to be defined a bit more. LJ902, great input, vector lines, bigger EEG, and after that I'm pretty sure I can work in the frequencies in a way that integrates with the design rather than labels it. =]

I would avoid the Phoytoshop gradients in this one. make the lines thin out, or use the Stamp filter and see how it looks

I'm trying a new direction with this one. I'm thinking of "Insomnia" as the title. The face is a bit rough and I'm not sure about the background but I wanted to get your input before I go on. Comments and suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hmm this could actually get really cool I think, i'd say try and make the face so that it doesn't drag too much attention from the brain. I kinda liked what you had going earlier, but I also wanna see were you can go with this. Keep it up!

This new direction is much better! However, the brain looks slightly too big for the head - It shouldn't be right up to the sides. Why don't you make the brain slightly smaller and give the head a 'wall' to mark out where the skull would encase the brain. Hope that makes sense!

Thanks Chris. By wall I'm assuming a 3D thickness to the top line of the face to show the brain is encased within, no? Sounds good, I'll give it a try when I redraw the face. What about the drunken sheep, too much?

OK, I'm definitely pursing the idea of "Insomnia" instead of sound wave (hertz) effects on the brain. I toned down the face (thanks askel) and I made the brain smaller and added a wall between the face and the brain (thanks Chris Rowson). Any other comments/suggestions would be much appreciated. I like the way you where going with both ideas. Maybe some jagged random marks would reinforce the uneasiness of insomnia. The halftone works really well here. Cheers!

Nice def looks better in this v. I really like the mood the colors create, not that the background isn't good but you could try something else maybe? Sorry can't think of any advice for that right now. I'd also like to see you play around a little with the placement and size, might look cool if it's a bit off center??

I don't know askel, the face jutting to the left and the brain to the right is a bit asymmetrical, I don't think I need an off-center placement to make the design less symmetrical (more interesting). As far as the background, Lumpycheeks also had the suggestion that I might try a more unsettled background to help convey the idea of insomnia, so I'll definitely look into changing the background in V5. Thanks!

Freaky. Suggest it sans brain eyes. I also take issue with the stroke of the face. It's just too sharp and clean compared to every other element. I see where you're going with your insomnia idea, but I think you could think about using the coolness of the image without the eyes, or finding a different way to convey insomnia (neon glow? or something to that tune) mainly because i don't think it will be the first idea to come to people's minds. Still, I think this will go far.

Maybe you should consider glow ink for this:

at day - normal head, at night the brain starts shining.

Then it would make more sense.



Also, the head needs detailing, it's too much of a contrast in effort :)

this is a great idea, i have insomnia and i like the way you have portrayed it. the eyes in the brain are good, don't take them out. i agree with belakas that glow ink would look good, and that the head needs to be slightly more detailed. some people might like the contrast between the brain and face, im not sure but personally i think you should play around with it a bit.

the drawing is fricking good..so i think the man should be just as detail.. NOT as much cause you don't want to draw away from the brain, but just a few details;) hope that helps.

Hey dude! If you're going for insomnia this is great! Just not sure about the texture os the man's face. The brain is realistic, maybe the face should be as well. I think that insomnia idea has a lot more potential, but if you're going for the Hz concept, use the headphones.

i agree. the face texture is a little off putting, i would rather be able to see the face a litltle better and the brain be more sandy looking... i like this better than the music, this seems more original and eye catching.

I think you're gonna need to make the difficult choice between insomnia or music. I you wanna go with music, why not bring back the headphones, they looked cool? If you wanna go with insomnia then the guy's eyes have to be open I think. Then you need to emphasize the sleeplessness part, maybe by putting bags under his eyes. Having the brain counting sheep is another idea but then you risk upsetting the 'creepiness' of the design as it stands (by the way don't worry about it looking eerie, that's a good thing).

I'm with tranquillo - maybe a little more realism on the man's face, sans texture. But I LOVE the brain, it looks so awesome.

This has progressed really nicely from the original. You know I don't mind the textured face at all really. It actually makes my eye draw more toward the brain and creepy eyes. I love the creepiness to this image alot! I almost want to see the brain pop more just a little possibly. I like the blue tone but maybe just lighten the brain up to make it really have more of a impact. You got some really beautiful detailing in there that can stand out better. YES! everyone, I'm still debating whether to go music or insomnia or something else. To tell you the truth, I saw a brain on TV and I immediately saw a face in it and I got excited about what a cool image that would be and put a lot of time making it and now I have it and don't know what to do with it. :P

the expression on the face of the brain seems abit vacant, if u kno wot i mean. perhaps if the eyes were looking out on the viewer it may engage the them and give it a more sinister feel.

I like the brain but I agree with tom griffin, make the eyes look at the viewer. The face doesn't need more it's okay the way it is.

Info: humans use just a small % of their brain in general, and it's usually used for basic functions like sound processing...... just something to think about. Hope it helps! I actually agree with what the last person wrote about liking the first version the best. As well as thinking that the face seems too distracting, I actually really, really enjoyed the first version. I think I'd just suggest that you also put up a picture of the shirt placement, and maybe make the image smaller on the shirt than you did in this last one. But yeah, overall, I'd stick with your first design.
