Glow in the Dark shirt.

During the day when the shirt is lighter all you can see is the inner details and the connect-the-dots which are all 1's and 0's. but at night in the dark the whole robot glows in the dark (hopefully making sense of the binary code connect-the-dots!)

I've never tried glow in the dark before, so would appreciate advice from those who have as to what colours it works best on - at the moment i've taken the threadless advice and gone for a light coloured shirt, though i'm not certain that's best.

i dunno if it'll be as cool though if you only have what's already defined showing...you might wanna draw in a few more lines because you can't really tell from what's there how the robot is going to look on the bottom...it's a really sweet idea though with the glow in the dark doing the dot to dot

solid concept! Have you considered thermal ink as appose to glow in the dark? I would want my shirt to look rad when I'm out walking around rather than when I'm alone in my house playing vids. Just a thought. Great work!

a few changes. i cleaned it up a bit for one - made the dots and numbers a little more uniform - and I also added more lines in the day version. they're bits that wouldn't get filled out if you were to actually connect the dots so it makes sense plus it also makes the robot a bit more obvious in the day version.

i played around with using different super glow colours on the robot as well but found one looked best, would be interested to hear others opinions though.

also, whats thermal ink??

really nice concept. i think that the 1s and 0s aren't really necessary though, it's clever enough without that, and i would prefer it to look like a classic join the dots (and not necessarily of a robot). i dont think any lines should be filled in apart from on the glow in the dark layer. i think the concept is a winner but you need to work on the image, i'd like it to be a knight or a somebody playing baseball or something, the kind of stuff that's in vintage kids books... but that might just be me. either way perhaps try looking at some real join the dots images if you haven't already?

Hm, I think using different colors isn't so bad, so the lines that we connect ourselves, and different line colors for the robot parts that're already there actually helps I think. (:

Personally I like it, I think it justifies the robot while if it were regular numbers it could be anything. That said I can also see how it might be inessential

I think you should keep the lines on the normal shirt. It gives your design shape, instead of being a collection on dots.

As far as 1s & 0s or normal numbers, im not sure which I would like better. Normal number would be easiers to follow but I like the idea of 1s & 0s.

Any thoughts on shirt colour? At the moment it's silver grey, but I was thinking of just regular White (except I know threadless hates White shirts!) or maybe another light coloured shirt- any suggestions or other opinions on how to improve this? I think it's missing something still and I don't want to sub it till it's strong enough.

I'd say silver grey. And also, perhaps you could try to pull this off. have the lines in the day represent something else, perhaps looking something like a car? and then the glow adds in all the other lines turning it into a robot, much like transformers! I think if you could pull that off, it would be awesome lol...

haven't had a chance to really look into azth idea yet it's going to be tough!) but made a couple of minor modifications to this in the meantime.

larger numbers and dots on the day version and added some solid colour to the night version... only a little mind you but i think it makes a diff.

maybe if u don't have any lines which it's white, and the lines get connected in the dark(Glow) that make more sense and nicer!

I think it's pretty cool, but I would take more care with the presentation. The more you add to the background the more it distracts from the nice simplicity of the t-shirt.

so i've tried to make the robot a little more interesting by giving him some depth. i really like the way he looks now, but i think it's at the sacrifice of the day shirt which just looks kinda skew.

should i maybe leave the original dots as they were (means the day and night image don't match up though) or potentially i could just scrap the dots all together, put a monotone grey image on the day shirt that comes to life and glows bright at night? (looks nicer than it sounds, promise!)



btw - i know there' s no numbers in this one, but they take ages so wasn't going to put them on till i got feedback.

hi bonk inc. if you're new to this one, i guess it's rather confusing!

the white is it in the day time, while the darker shirt is it at night time with super-glow glow in the dark colours.

ok, the day shirt on the last one just didn't work at all so i thought i could leave the shading in to give it some sort of definition while losing all the external lines so it's still connect-the-dots.

day opt 1 has no inner details and day opt2 has all the inner details. not certain which i prefer personally - thoughts?

and then there night glow one is top-right - a little big on the shirt maybe, but for now i want to make sure you can see it.

no numbers on this version - too small, but i plan on sticking with the binary code connect-the-dot numbers unless too many people tell me otherwise (it seems 50-50 at the mo)

ok ok, i think i get it, it's a white shirt right? but does it turn black somehow or is it still white at night with the neon-ish glows?



either way, i like "day 2" best and try placing it in the bottom right corner of the shirt. :P good job!! i didnt know about the different glow colors!! what's the gradient btw?

i just used a darker colour cause presumably the shirt isn't going to look bright white at night. maybe a bit too dark though, i'll change that in the next version.

i think the dots should be numbered. i think this is an improvement, and the robot is looking better, but i'd like it to look closer to a normal join the dots in day time... i think if you could tell it was a robot without any of the shading, just the dots, then all the colours and detail comes in at night, that would be a really strong design.

been google imaging join-the-dots and this generally seems to be the case - they either look like nothing at all, or they have lines drawn in that give them away early on.

With the glow print, would it be visible at all during the day? I ask, because some glow-in-the-dark inks show up as a pale cream or white colour on the fabric in the day time. If it does do this, then it is acually a plus, because you can use the pale colour to outline the robot and get away with just printing the dots in black.



It's a fantastic concept and I love the use of the glow print.



I think bringing the numbers back could be a good idea also - they bring it back to the old school join the dots pictures.

you make a good point lacie_h, as far as i can tell the super-glow is vaguely visible during the day so that could mean getting away without the lines. i think i would still need to represent it in the submission to try get an accurate reflection, it's hard to know how much though without having seen one.

little explanation about the day version - the dots and numbers (they're back!) are to be printed as normal.

The grey shadow you see is what I expect the superglow to look like on a light shirt during the day according to this

which shows that superglow ink shows up during the day.



Personally I think this works loads in my favour - in the day part of the design, the connect-the-dots becomes the main focus, while the non-glowing super glow print adds the definition it so badly needed without me having to do it.

and then at night it glows pretty colours - yay!

I agree with the last comment. You might somehow get lost among the dots without noticing what the whole thing is about. The concept, however, is brilliant!

I like this idea!

I like the thick and thin lines of the robot's arms and outer shell, I think you should implement those thin lines onto the inner workings of the robot as well. The robot buttons and face seem to have one size stroke, try adding a thinner stroke inside of some of the shapes.

Something feels weird about the left side of the robot. Check the perspective of the left ear, and the left shoulder. Also I think the detail is different compared to the right ear and shoulder?

agree about the feet, and the left ear (!). perhaps have the eyes and mouth as blocks instead of the feet? i still think the robot needs more... different thickness of lines will help, perhaps more detail too. another way to make the design more interesting in the day time would be to have something like two robots fighting, and only one of them is a join the dots.

It's cleaned up alot ... I really like it ... I understand the use of the "0" and "1", but most connect the dots go in numerical order so you know where to start and where to end ... either make the numbers in order or have a stop and start sign ... otherwise I think its good as is.

Now I know that the red is not really red but actually orange though I can understand the other guys are saying. Have you tried doing the feet with a blank front like the rest of the blue sections?



Sumocloud is also right. The left ear (as in the robot's left ear - our right) looks kind out of perspective. Could you make it any bigger? I think the right ear would look funny if it were any smaller.



As for the detail, I think it looks pretty good as it is. Adding much more could subtract from the feel of the join-the-dots pictures. Could you add in some bolts maybe?



It is heading down the right path for sure. If this gets printed, I would totally buy it.

thanks for all your suggestions guy, most of them are right - the feet are too solid (a throw back from when he was 2 dimensional and I was trying to get something abit more interesting in there, but unnecessary now) and the perspective is off. i knew it was, I just couldn't figure out how/why so thanks for pointing that out to me.

hi everyone!

so i think i've addressed most of the issues bought up with the last version. i've tried to correct the perspective, not certain how succesfully so would appreciate opinions on that please! I changed the feet to an outline as opposed to block colour, I've added more detail into the robot itself and I've added a start/finish point for the connect-the-dots on the day version.

Someone suggested adding a pencil or something like that on the day version to bring out the connect-the-dots theme - as you can see I havent done that yet but would like to hear other people's opinions on this idea.

try adding a tiny antenna with a little ball on top... not too big

actually, the right ear shouldn't be solid colour! can't believe i didn't spot that (everything else forward facing is blank)!

A little too gimmicky for my tastes...but it's a well-rendered simplistic design that could be rad for a kids' tee. The 0-1-0-1-0-1 numbering system is really confusing.

the robot is looking better and better, but i still think you need to make it it more interesting in daytime. add a kid with a remote control in non join the dots for daytime?

i think like sumocloud, that the daytime/night must be developped, right now, it's not pretty exciting, sumocloud idea is pretty good for example ;)

yes it's working pretty good right now. To me the numbers must be very tiny, now they are too big and heavy. If you are not sure of how it would be the quality of printed tiny numbers, just print a real size black/white paper and apply it on a tee. Then check if it works and how small you can make them ^_^ nice nice btw!

great idea, but looking at it during the day is just a blurry bunch of small dots.. to add the start & finish is a good one, but you need to work on the daylight scene... but that has already been said in previous comments i see now..

so as suggested i tried to add something to the day version to make it more interesting - a colouring in book and a pencil, just line work at the moment. can't say i'm convinced it worked myself, but it's only a first go - would appreciate opinions on it. also changed the robot slightly in the day version - added more dots and added the edges back in. Overall i think this is how i like the robot during the day - looks the most like a classic connect-the-dots so book/pencil aside, this is how he'll appear during the day i think. night time is the same as before.

is this any improvement? i worry the extra detail is actually detracting from the original concept?

hated v9 within about 3 seconds of putting it up so here is v10 which i quite like.

day robot has more dots than previous versions and the edge lines are back in - for the record this is how I think i like the robot the most, looks more like a classic connect-the-dots i think.

and then i added in a pencil, just a pencil very roughly rendered at the moment, maybe could do with more detail and shadows.

oh and for anyone geeky enough to care about this sort of thing, the numbers actually now spell "robot" in binary code!

v11 is looking great! I love the route that you have taken with this design. Unlike hatestheyanks, I don't think that the dials are too much "information" and the design is more aesthetically pleasing without the pencil.

wow, this really came along! sorry I haven't read all the comments, but did you keep the binary or not? I'd have to say binary is not a good way to go, but that's just me...

the binary completely ruins the connect the dot pattern - how do you know where to draw the line to next? I think it's a nice idea, but in practice it's kind of pointless! :P :)

I get what you mean staffel but while it might be pointless in practice, hopefully no one is actually going to be praticing on their nice new shirt! :-)
