This is my first shirt design. It was also my first time using Illustrator.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You!

No one is making comments. Constructive criticism would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think even if it's a very simple idea it it's kind of funny, I find the guy smoking at the bottom quite funny. Anyhow, the execution needs al ot of work, for example you could use two shades of purple to bring the grapes some volume, also don't make them so perfectly rounded, grapes are like ovals, and they are not all the same size, use strokes tat have different thiknesses. My 2 cents here.

I don't think it's something you would get without the title, and even when you do get it, it's just not executed in a hilarious manner. Play with it some more... good luck!

I agree with Petanca, use a couple of purples to give them more depth.

I think that with out the title I would still find this shirt funny, I admit that the title made me click on it in the critique section.

Just make it awesomer and you should be good to go. Thats right awesomer.

seems like you have the ideas, but horrible execution... But what do I know... i know all.

I see what you mean about using more shades of purple, but I'm already at my 5 color limit. I guess I could ax the leaf and not use green.

Originally I also had brown in the mix before I read about the 5 color limit.

ok here goes...get ready for some pain (if your ego is involved, i suggest you cut your ego out leaving only 1/5th of it in tact.)

idea: simple and doable that's good.

execution: terrible. pedestrian, lazy, really very bad. and i'm not being rude.

what you have done is used a computer to make the circles and the eyes and all the face pieces and it shows. it's very impersonal. if you were to draw this by hand and do so WELL, then it has a fighting chance...instead you have what you have...

composition: very boring and static. it's pretty much a diamond shape with "perfect" symetry. it doesn't NEED to be that perfectly placed. and that has to do with the illustration, draw it differently...from a different angle etc.

as for tips on technique...how i do (and a few others do)...

i draw with a blue pencil usually (it doesn't scan as obviously as graphite) and ink using any of various pens (fine sharpie, uniball, gel whatever) erasing only the darkest bits of blue that might show up in the scan.

i use photoshop, so i take the scan and clean up the line art first when it's still a bit map...after i make sure any blemishes are gone, i change it to grayscale and then to RGB scale. from there, i select the line art (which is usually black) and make a new layer, then i fill in with black the lines on the new layer (it will be a transparent layer with only line art on it (much like you would have with an over head projector transparency). i make several more blank layers and delete or just hide the original line art (all the while keeping the layer with the floating line art).

with the floating line art, i select all parts that would be desegnated to a single colour i.e. white eyes. move to a blank layer and fill in. i repeat this with the various colours of the design always moving to a new blank layer per new colour.

once i have done this to my liking i go back to the flaoting line work, select all of it so the lines are all that is selected, and i move to each layer deleting the line shape from each colour layer...the base layer will then be my shirt colour of which i have many colours to choose from and do so laborously half of the time as there are so many. you see...the shirt colour will double now for the line art, you must hide or delete the line art entirely for this technique to work...

unless you insist on having the line work overlaying, this seems to be the best way (for me anyway) to do it.

also, learn to draw/cartoon. study style and technique of your favorite artists and emulate them, soon, if you have talent to begin with, your skill will grow and their style will merge with your burgeoning skills to become your very own style.

in other words: this needs lots of work.
