still have to do a lot of coloring and shading, but i've managed to get it down to 8 colors.
is the streetlamp and postbox a good idea? (v.1) or does anyone of you have a good idea to create the environment around the jeep... |
i forgot to put a photocamera around the zebra's neck....
monkeydumpster on Mar 30 '09
I definitely like the city background. Maybe make the city look a bit more like an african safari. i.e. streetlamps for trees etc.
Iels on Mar 30 '09
Add some garbage and a fire hydrant on the walkway of your previous version
tiffa34 on Mar 30 '09
I think having the streetlamp and postbox is a good idea, it'll make the idea stronger I reckon.
The illustration so far is great btw! |

Iels on Mar 30 '09
Make them drive through a field full of sheep and cows?
That's an actual safari.. Haha! |
thanks for all the suggestions thus far.
@ iels i think i'll need to keep it like an urban jungle, with city stuff. a fire hydrant is a good one |
A92Crew on Mar 31 '09
yea, definitely, do urban jungle, put more (but not too much) stuff there:)
greenttentacle on Mar 31 '09
very nice, but i think they need to spot some humans lurking in the dark.
Would be very appreciative if you could critique mine- Gaia’s Autumn |

cleaned it up completely,
also added some urban jungle stuff, a photocamera for the zebra, a mouse and a backpack. hope you all like it :-) |
Can you add some subtle background to enhance the urban aspect?
Maybe some subtle buildings. I just feel it needs a little something extra so it doesn't just float on the t. Good luck! |
I think this would look so much better if you hand-inked it.
Nice work - but fyi, Leroy Hornblower did an animals on an urban safari design, I think. |
A92Crew on Mar 31 '09
looks better! are you planing to put some buildings?
good point, PaperCrane and A92Crew.
i think i have to add some extra light building silhouettes next to the sidewalk as a background of the jeep. i can see now that this is just too empty indeed. not planning to add people or something like that btw, i want to keep the focus on the jeep in front... the urban stuff itself should do the trick. i'll experiment a bit... |
@fatheed, thanks for pointing that out :-(
luckily we only have a zebra in common with a different safari-feel imo :-) and hand-inked? to get it less static? to adjust some of the line thickness will also help a lot. |
Iels on Mar 31 '09
Haha great,
But you really need some building background I think |

this is pretty funny! maybe add some cows and stuff like that :)
I'm sorry mtths, I'm not getting the sheep in the meadow thing. It was a good reverse concept with them going through the city. Are you a bit paranoid about Leroy Hornblower's design being too similar? I don't think yours is different enough. I don't know, maybe post a link and see what people think, although you'll probably get a dozen people in scoring brining it up. It's a dilemma.
Maybe you can have them looking distressed while traveling through a land fill with dump trucks, a logging camp with desolated scenery, or something like that and enter this into the green challenge. Maybe a recreational campground where the people are living in the woods (could be night with camp fires and silhouetted figures from tent lights). Ignore these if you like, I won't mind at all, just trying to help keeping this going and maybe it will spark another idea. Anyway, the characterizations are very cool and the drawing is great. Cheers! |

Hmmm! iels and iamabeast might be right, if you add some cows, and barn, farmer, silo, etc in the distant background, maybe keep going with this. Your call.
@quister, thanks for the suggestions.
i think i'll stick with the agricultural meadow for now, it's closest to a "safari" wich is already in the title. the urban jungle thing has indeed been done here... heck, it was even a rolling stones concert tour... so, let's forget about that :-) adding a few cows will be fun! |

a couple questions what happened to the sheep? and why is the poor elephant not colored?
@SQUISHYSQUASH
started to halftone the shadows per animal. (takes a while ;-)) so the elephant, the jeep, the sheep (and cows probably) are waiting patiently in line... |
Huskeyman on Apr 01 '09
it's looking real nice. the progression from each version is great. i think once you have this doen it'll be ready to submit. but i'd forget about the cows, the sheep work really well....or maybe to throw a red herring out there, you could have the animals on a safari to view humans...just a thought, it might turn out cool.
"Pride"-critique it! |

there were a lot of comments about adding city stuff.
i would like to stick to an animal only design... (not to much surrounding scenery wich takes away the focus on the jeep) is the sign an improvement... what do you think? suggestions are more than welcome |
Kontroknock on Apr 02 '09
The jeep is rendered very nicely, I want to see what the elephant is spotting.
bleach01 on Apr 02 '09
I want to see them taking a city safari. People watching
Ehud L on Apr 02 '09
this looks great! I would add just a few blades of grass and maybe a small bush to get a feel of a savana or just a few sidewalk details if you want it set in a city. The sheep aren't half as interesting as the jeep riders. I think they should be people too. good luck!
Huskeyman on Apr 02 '09
i agree with Ehud, i think i mentioned earlier that people would probably be more appealing then the sheep, that is if your goin with the idea of role reversal. Going along with that having the people act like animals in the safari i.e. down on all fours, drinkin from watering hole, or grazing on grass; would bring up an interesting aspect i beleive. just a thought though! the rendering of the jeep and the animals in it look great though, no need to fix that!
Kuriko on Apr 02 '09
Yeah, I would say people instead of sheep. :)

m34 on Apr 02 '09
Great design! I agree with some of the comments though, just add some safari like background and youre good to go!
Ourson Grognon on Apr 03 '09
It could be great if you stick to the idea whatever it was (or emphasize it). Often we lose the prospective by making changes and "improvements". So if the main idea was to make a safari upside down : You could make humans eating grass instead of sheeps or you could make a lot of "explorators" (you know the ones with the british colonial helmet and a moustache) for instance.
Technically I would change the shadows under the sheeps and the jeep to make a plain one. |

ok, first attempt to add some humans... (still need to work on shading....)
what do you think? |
Ourson Grognon on Apr 03 '09
Right now I think it's too direct.
I see 2 ways to improve the idea (of course there are other ways but that's just the two I could think of). You could overcrowd the shirt with people. So the safari crew look isolated among the "wild humans". You can also think about what the human could be doing. (Do they eat grass ? Do they take a sun bath? Do they climb to trees? Do they do odd things? etc) Or You could put the safari crew in front of the scene and the humans in the far far distance. The elephant doesn't have to look directly to the humans. If he looks "outside the T shirt" but there are a lot of humans in the distance around the jeep, one can figure out that they are looking at some bunch of humans. |
Ourson Grognon on Apr 03 '09
btw do you know if there is and where to retrieve an animated flash template like I saw on other designs ?
i like your second idea... thanks!
to put humans in, is a good step, but they shouldn't be the main focus indeed. i always wanted the jeep to gat the main attention. i'll throw some more people in, behind the jeep... |

few more people with a bit more shadows, and the dust idea and you got yourself a pretty awesome design, placement will be an odd thing though.

Minor thing: The mother letting the baby play in traffic is bothering me. Trade places for the baby and the rock nearest the other woman's feet? Comment on mine? Ride the Storm |
Ehud L on Apr 04 '09
very very cool. maybe a dart gun in the car? this is probably a matter of taste but I dont like the smooth gradient shadows.
placement? |
Ourson Grognon on Apr 04 '09
Yeah this is really going good !
Tracks on the sand are good, I would make more dust though. I have to agree with Ehud about the gradient It also kind of makes the rocks look like they were wet (but yes it may be a matter of taste). Maybe you could give a try moving the car a little to the left or tot the right in order that it won't be too much in the center of the illustration (It may give a better feeling of movement/speed I think). I 'm not too fond of the woman on the right. Instead I would draw more children because you can have them doing fool things like crawling, hiding, fighting... without the odd feeling that it gives with an adult...Or maybe you can draw a child riding her back like a poney :-) You could use the flash/swf to show the 3 squares because that's actually the first thing you see and it's kind of disturbing when you want to have an overall feeling about your illustration. |
thanks for the comments thus far, i'm really glad i returned to the original concept and put the humans in, instead of the sheep...
i know what you mean with the halftones... but v.7 doesn't do it for me... too flat. i like them on the jeep and the people. but you def have a point about the rocks. they don't look rocky enough. need to make them sharper. i like the idea to put a child on the womans back, like riding a poney. about the three thumbs.. thats's just for now of course. in the final presentation they'll get their own slide. |

how about something like this? (colouring/shading not finished yet)
added more humans, and changed the composition, so that the jeep seems to be moving more than in previous versions. what do you think? |
Francesa on Apr 04 '09
The composition was better in V14. This way the jeep is riding off into an armpit. Or else it will have to be smaller and will lose some impact.
Ha-ha! Great!
Rock and people shading/shadows should do it. It gets better every V. Cheers! |
TTUraider on Apr 04 '09
maybe add one more group of something back in the top upper left? That way the movement you've added is still there, but also, they won't have already passed everything :) I really like how it's progressing, keep it up! :)
Thanks so much commenting mine :) |
Ehud L on Apr 04 '09
yeah just one more person at the upper left area and you're done. great job!
I agree. I think it would improve the composition on the shirt. And maybe move the right child and rock a bit into the center to create more of a circular movement of the viewer's eye.
greenttentacle on Apr 04 '09
i'm not sure about those rocks. they look a little out of place.... i'd like to see darker tracks, i suspect most safari's travel the same way, so wouldn't the tracks be somewhere more defined?
greenttentacle on Apr 04 '09
also... i know you've editted it this far... but i really do prefer your first sketch with the safari in the city. this is good too, don't get me wrong - but i'm concerned that you'll be restricting your design by only allowing it to be placed on a yellow tee.

hmm.. i like the sand one, but it looks great on yellow too.. critique mine? |
BlueHippo on Apr 05 '09
Hehe, I like it. Nice animals, and a silly concept :3 The one complaint I have is that the hippo's snout is a little too long.. but I might be picky about the way I draw hippos, heh ;P Wish there was a full detail of the animals in the car, but I know you needed to show the other characters, heh.
Yellow sounds good. That or sand I suppose. |
atzh on Apr 05 '09
wooo sub sub sub!!
Looks great! I have one more suggestion and that is to make the shirt slide bigger. I don't think you need to show all of the shirt with a lot of space around it. Besides it's the only slide where the viewers can see the entire design. Maybe do the shirt as first slide, then details and put the colors on the last slide. Anyway, great idea, design and illo! I'll be rooting and scoring as soon as it's up. Cheers!

Great, sub sub!
it's funny, and the drawing is fantastic, could you critique mine please? http://www.threadless.com/critique/41052/The_pig_eon Thanks a lot! |
@quister,
i know what you mean, but this version is all about the shirt colors. the final presentation will probably show the complete design on first slide. then on the last slide, i'll show the sand & yellow tshirts i think. maybe i fix a 4th slide in, to show more details. (one for the jeep, and one for the humans) |
Enna Isilee on Apr 05 '09
Ehud L on Apr 05 '09
have the first slide be the entire design, then shirt, then details in diff colors. looks really good. sand all the way.
I should have read your post more carefully, duh! I do like the yellow but the tan gives it a desert location and, I think, better supports the narrative. Did you try the dijon in the organic swatches? Maybe that will give it the warm feeling you're after and appear more desert like than the yellow. Cheers!
@quister, no worries :-)
the dijon (mustard?) color, is too dark i think. tried that with the color of the giraffes spots, and the whole scene became too dark... but i tried that without having the humans in, so, i'll give it another shot to see how it looks. maybe i'll show, the yellow, the sand and the natural shirt colors. |

Ourson Grognon on Apr 06 '09
Hi !
Here some suggstions (And please dont throw some of those rocks at me :-D ): I did like them better when they were on solid grey anyway. About the dust behind the car, you could make a lot more in order to focus the look on the main subject which is the jeep and the animals in it. I think that right now there is too much "competition" about what the subject is really about. |
@Ourson,
about the rocks, they're indeed a bit off, compared to the rest of the design. i was already trying to get them more in the same style as the rest. have to avoid the looks of v.14 though. about the main focus on the jeep, then i have to remove the guy on the rock (top left), like v.15. i think that's a good thing, because v.15 works much better. |
atzh on Apr 06 '09
maybe if you gave the jeep a more central position on the shirt that might bring the focus back? In that case you'll have to move the top right guy over to the left. Not sure how that would look, but just throwing out ideas.
i don't think the jeep needs to be in the middle to get the main focus. when i urge the man on the left rock to take his rock, and roll it over to the rocks on the top right, then the jeep isn't surrounded anymore with scenery.
i think it works best when the jeep is on the left... (see v.15, instead of surrounded by stuff) increasing the dust behind the jeep (like Ourson suggests), gives the jeep+dust the main focus i'm looking for... i'll experiment a bit to see what works.. thanks for the comments! |
Enna Isilee on Apr 06 '09
Hm... Personally I liked it better without the people. But the design is still fantastic.

I like sand better, except for the yellow glow under the jeep. The design has so much yellow in it that it's effect is diluted on the yellow shirt. On sand it stands out much better.
April Not May on Apr 07 '09
Yeah, I think that is the only issue now, the fact that on the sand shirt, the yellow dirt stands out to much. It, of course, blends better on the yellow shirt. Maybe the dirt under the jeep could be diluted to where it doesn't stand out so much on the sand shirt, but still looks right on the yellow shirt as well. Otherwise, I really like this shirt design.
