I wasn't happy with that first drawing....not sure if this one's better or not. What do you think? Classic, or classic beauty witch?
Vman325 on Mar 04 '09
I like it better, the witch is hotter! Interested to see where you go with it. I thinky you can do without the text on the pistol tho.
The RedBalloon |
wow I like both version 1 and 2, drawings are great so far :)
I had a similar idea a long time ago except some kids were chasing her on her broom with water guns! Glad to see you're actually making it happen though! |
mrJAkHAk on Mar 04 '09
I like 'em both, but this one is def better. Not as witch-y, but who said witches had to be old and ugly? The garments and hat will give it away enough. I say keep working on this one!
i dunno i kinda like them both. Maybe with eyes closed?
I don't think the fact that she's a witch will be an issue (especially cause I think she's gonna be the classic green color). However, I think I will definitely try doing one with eyes closed.
Also - I'm thinking about haivng her bottom half almost all melted away - You think that would work alright? |
squintygirl on Mar 05 '09
I think I like it with her eyes open, otherwise she might look like she's already dead.
In the movie, the Wicked Witch kind of 'steamed' away, rather than melted, even though she kept shouting out that she was melting. If you want that kind of element in your design, you might try that tactic rather than traditional melting. |
That's a good point - I guess I was thinking less water and more a heap of clothes in a puddle or something....I think it'll probably be hard to judge until I do a sketch, I'm just trying to think about how it will fit on a shirt.
wigglefish on Mar 05 '09
Really great illo so far.
Eelydave on Mar 05 '09
I don't think her looks are that important, however I do think there needs to be a stronger connection to TWOZ and some story telling as to why she is doing this.

I don't think her looks are that important, however I do think there needs to be a stronger connection to TWOZ and some story telling as to why she is doing this. I'm not sure that's really necessary. Once her skin is coloured the traditional witchy-green and the water gun is coloured in fun neon, the concept and the connection will be very clear. |
kajire on Mar 05 '09
Fantastic... Submit it !
I'm not sure that's really necessary. Once her skin is coloured the traditional witchy-green and the water gun is coloured in fun neon, the concept and the connection will be very clear.
That's the plan! We'll see - if she's melting maybe it'll just be clear that she's putting herself out of her misery. |
Henni81 on Mar 05 '09
I like it! But maybe the witch could have a different look in her face, now she is so numb.
I could also use some help: Please comment if you like it! |
this is going to be WICKED!
^haha!
More work on this during the weekend...I hope.
Flatlandgamer on Mar 06 '09
Great start! Lots of potential so far :) My only question is...if she hasn't pulled the trigger yet, why would she be melting, or steaming or whatever already? :-p
Flatlandgamer on Mar 06 '09
...and to add to that, I kind of like the text how you have it, especially if it ends up being nice and bright...kind of ironic that something so fun and colorful would be the killer
Oh! I see, the text on the watergun right?
Flatlandgamer on Mar 07 '09
Yes, I think the text fits, and add to the humor of the shirt :) just my opinion tho ;)
null. on Mar 07 '09
cool idea, no point in writing needs work because obviously you will work on it :P
westicles on Mar 07 '09
Haha This is great. Can't wait to see it finished.
Great idea! Great sketch!
No doubt the green colored flesh will convey the witch persona. I think the labeling doesn't add much and may draw too much attention from the visual narrative. That it's a water pistol is pretty evident to me without the words. Maybe if the gun were bit further from her head with a squirt of water smearing or running the colors it lands on would make it more obvious but I don't know, overkill? Anyway, great going, should be a winner, I'd five it as is on a green shirt. Cheers! |
great idea, but i'd go with the more conventional wizard of oz witch. I mean after all that's the scene people associate with 'witches melting from having had water thrown on them'
BrickCitySinger on Mar 07 '09
I like the second one better. Both are really good though. Start to make it a reality now. I'd love to see where you place this on the shirt, how you shade it, the colors you use. go now!!
crit me please! |
I have one sub to finish up and then I'll be updating this with a newer version!
oddreaper on Mar 07 '09
Definitely the cute witch. I dislike the ugly/witch association, and why would I want to wear something ugly on my body? Especially since your cute witch is so friggin adorable. And the first witch looks like Obama, and I'm sure you're going to go the familiar route and make her green, so we'd have this strange Greenbama in Drag thing happening and it would not be a party on my breasts. I demand that my t-shirts be a party on my breasts and I do not think that Greenbama in Drag brings the party. Although the linework of the first witch is fantastic. If you can't find a good t-shirt angle, both images would make intriguing and saleable logos, posters, paintings, comics, etc. Your style is great and there are merits to each version.
But given the choice between wearing something ugly or something pretty? My body is prime real estate, so I'll pick pretty.... Sorry. I'm lame. My critique. |
That is one long critique, oddreaper! I didn't have time this past weekend. Maybe this week! - I'm itching to work on this some more.

At first, I wanted the witch to be ugly as it would be a more clear reference to the witch in wicked, but now that I think about it, I like this version more. I think it will be much clearer when you colour her green and such, great work. I really want to see this in colour.
comment on mine? |
IfishIII on Mar 09 '09
I think once it's colored, the text on the gun won't be as bad looking.
This is a great concept and your drawing is awesome. Looking forward to the colored version. I'd appreciate your thoughts on my sub if you have time:) |

Worked on sketching out the whole composition - What do you think of her melting and the shoes?
hmmm. . . I'm a little confused why her bottom half would already be melted if she's pointing the water gun at here head. . . unless there was already a water source she was standing in I didn't see before?
I kinda was thinking maybe she started melting (for whatever reason) and decided to put herself out of her misery.
Also compositionally I was thinking of a way to do the full illustration without cutting her off at the waist. Sorry if her crumpled dress looks like poo. |
the_loislame on Mar 09 '09

i still don't get why a manga witch.
I mean why the significance in illustrating it in that deliberate style? The illo is great, but the reason for the combination of the concept and the style and execution is lost on me. |
rabodnube on Mar 10 '09
Great, Elphaba maybe look like that, but the shoes are not the same models.
The monkey idea is a posibility to be more attractive your compotition. Idea: Green t-shirt and black draw...contrast. |
eviewoo on Mar 10 '09
this is awesome i like it sketchy good idea
eskimokiss - why do you think it looks manga?
so cool. maybe it's raining and that's why she was starting to melt, so she's putting herself out of misery faster with the gun? but then her face would be melting, too...hmmm
this is gonna be pretty rad, man |
What do you guys think about just her holding the gun up to her head vs. this version with the bottom half?
I think if I decided to work on the first version I would include the other hand holding the shoe. |

awww so sad! Great idea though, nice illo.
Please check out my slogans if you get the chance. |

Opinions?
aboutandy on Mar 10 '09
I like the sketch more that shows her bottom half but I think in the final version there should be some reason as to why she is already melting. Maybe she fell into water or something. Then it would be like you said that she was putting herself out of misery.
Would you guys look at my critque ? |
flip175 on Mar 10 '09
I like the fact that she's melting as a way to show her entire body on the shirt, but I agree that there has to be some way to show why she's ending her own life faster than melting
maybe have it be raining? |
I like the general idea of water and the witch, but I've not seen many suicidal subs do that well here. I feel as if there should just be a bunch of monkeys holding her at water-gun-point, and one with a big bucket or other various water weapons.
Bio-bot 9000 on Mar 10 '09
maybe someone already said this, but what if it were just a black melty puddle, no body, with a witch hat sticking up, and a water gun lying nearby a note that said "Goodbye cruel world." or "Oh what a world" (think Oz) or something like that?
Bio-bot 9000 on Mar 10 '09
plus, her face staring straight at the viewer is a bit off-putting. this should be funnier rather than depressing.
I'll be honest, suicide can be funny and work well on a t-shirt but more often than not it doesn't work very well, it's iffy. You might want to play around with some monkeys idea, that might work better? Or what if you played with the concept instead of portraying a bunch of things witches CAN'T do, like take a bath or wash their hands or go on a beach vacation somewhere?
Thanks guys! I'm still thinking about this one!

Goodbye wicked world might be a bit hard to read right now, perhaps make it a bit bigger? But i love this style and concept better as well. nice work man!

i think the text on the paper is fine as-is. You make it any bigger and it becomes too prominent. Its not like its needed to be read to understand the illustration anyways...
Love that the squirt gun has china written on the bottom. |

may not be a thing worth pursuing, but you know the classic movie bath suicide thing of writing on the wall in blood? she could scrawl "goodbye wicked world" in water somewhere, if the note turns out to be too small.
the watergun colours are going to be fun with this. :) |

Still It will most likely be vetor so I can play with size then. Thanks for all the positives! Bio-bot's suggestion rocked! |

Henni81 on Mar 12 '09
Yes! Alot better, and easier to work with as you pointed out! The joke is easier to understand too, in my opinion.
Want to help me with something? |
fallinghorse on Mar 12 '09
Would it look more like she used the gun on herself if it were pointed the other way? If you glance at this real quick it could look like someone else used it and dropped it.
janini on Mar 12 '09
Oh, that is so cool. Mybe you can put the red shoes somewhere - but it works also well without them
fallinghorse - I tried that and it didn't work so well compositionally, I think with the note and all the joke is pretty clear still.
janini - thought about that as well, but since it didn't add much to the story or the joke (I think it's obvious it is a watch and all) I decided against it. |

JayW is right: Bio-bot's suggestion+ Chengui concept and execution =truly top notch.
Chengy: way to stick to your guns when you know you're right, and listen to the critiques when they make sense. Can't wait to see the colors and stuff. The only reason it's getting "needs work" is because it's not done. (Hm. I worked 'execution' and 'gun' into that without even trying to. If you wanta check out my slogans, I'd be honored, but it's never required. I'm going now to your other stuff.) |

Minor MINOR update. Worked on the text on the note, rotated the whole thing slightly to level it out and added some reflections in the water...
bygrinstow on Mar 15 '09
oooo, if on a green shirt, what if you just illustrated the 'sheen' on the liquid/water/goo and let the shirt color be the liquid color? that's a good suggestion |
I'm afraid the water won't be separated enough from the shirt color. We'll see shat I can do. I'm working on the green one now.

I was looking through the previous versions, and I liked the path version three started to take the best
I think it's just a lot more interesting and explanation of the concept is done through the illustration rather than the text on the suicide note: sorry but the note's kindof lame. I think you should go back and develop version 3 more I'd like your input on my recent work = here |
supertrooper74 on Mar 15 '09
I think it's awesome, but it makes me wonder if she was naked when she committed suicide, ala Michael Hutchins. Where are her clothes?
DAMMIT! I just worked up three color options and then illustrator quit when I went to save.

It is looking really flabulous, man. But I do think the suggestions from supertrooper and olie! (well, it wasn't originally his, I don't think, but he agreed) might give this more visual appeal. Allowing the water or liquid to look more transparent by using the shirt color and adding highlights would be very interesting to see. Also, the absence of clothes (while not a big issue) I think leaves some room for added aesthetic interest.
Either way, this will be a very nice design! |

here's what it looks like without the water color. Personally I like it with but I'm open to arguments.

I could also do something inbetween where I lighten it from how I had it, I think that would make it more transparent.

Hey, you've got the shield, man . . . ;)
I like it like this, tho. |

eh, shield doesn't mean much. Right place at the right time is how I see it.

yeah I like both version, I don't know if it makes that big of a difference. I'd still be curious to see it on green, though!
Coming right up, olie! The green versions is gonna basically have the same colors as this one....but it'll give you an idea of if it's worth pursuing further.

fallinghorse on Mar 15 '09
blue. fo sho.
The tough part is I was using the shirt color for the hat reflection and highlights (I changed them in the bright blue so you can see how it effects the design)....doesn't work so well with the green. I tried taking out the water color, but the green is too dark for that to work.
Bright blue, or the original blue I had?
hmmm. . . what if on the green versions you changed the watergoo and watergoo highlights to a slightly lighter color of the green shirt you use instead of keeping it the blue. . . ?
the lowest one is slightly changed....
not much though.

I like blue... but you know what? I think green make more sence... It´s the ultimate attach to the whole joke because it makes you remember the witch.
Thanks all - I'm kinda torn between green and the blue. Blue will be much easier to do with my color palette but I do kinda like the puddle being green as if she is actually melted....
I'm going to work on it tonight hopefully, I'll update asap. Even if I decide on blue or green I'll have to pick between the two shades and would love all of your input! Thanks so much for all the suggestions thus far, it has really helped out! |

Tried the melted witch green color - I think I'll stick with a blue shirt but now I have another decision to make! which color shirt and what color puddle?
tawmie on Mar 16 '09
HAH! Awesome! This looks so great!!!! I'm not sure which one I like more. I think....the bottom one. Makes the water gun really pop. This looks pretty darn ready!
My next piece could always use your input. |
tawmie on Mar 16 '09
Blue shirt. Black would work too.
SuperRyan on Mar 16 '09
I still have to go with the blue puddle.
The green was a really interesting idea, though. I had to watch the Wizard of Oz clip again and see what the melted witch looks like (it's just her black costume) :p |
Thanks guys - I still can't decide - although one thing that makes me lean towards the blue puddle is how I have to axe a color in the squirt gun :(
mr deps on Mar 16 '09
really good, the bottom one does look better, but you really need the puddle green because otherwise it just looks like water. hmm, a dilemma indeed, maybe fiddle with the gun colours

And, yes, the green is the best choice. |
bygrinstow on Mar 16 '09
Halftone?
Would that help? |
I feel like I can make either one work, it's just a matter of which you prefer. A water looking puddle or a melted witch green puddle.
SuperRyan on Mar 16 '09
blue water works for me!
I've decided that I think one of my problems with the green is that at first glance it looks like the water gun had green goo in it.
evercurious on Mar 16 '09
i prefer blue - the watergun just seems more ridiculous on that one (being the only brightly coloured element).

So blue on blue then?
And you guys prefer the dark blue on the bottom over the V.8 one?
I love the green goo! Have you tried the top version on a green shirt? It works great on blue too either way
SuperRyan on Mar 17 '09
I'd say go with this darker blue color
I'm afraid it looks too much like mountain dew/gak.

The_Ali on Mar 17 '09
I love either one! This is awesome!
TTUraider on Mar 17 '09
I think the green one as well....that's how I would picture the leftovers of a melted witch to be at least ;) maybe to enforce that the green mess didn't just come out of the gun add drips from the nozzle or something, and use the light blue of the shirt as a color? Or show that there is water in the gun by filling the bottle part of the gun with water in the t-shirt color somehow?
Can you please help with my newest if you get the chance? http://www.threadless.com/critique/39470/Dream_Big_version_4 |
HaloGirl on Mar 17 '09
I agree with Evercurious - go blue on blue, or it looks like the green goo came from the gun.
I think I may try doing a halftone of the green on the bottom version so it looks like it's oozing out of the hat, but the whole puddle isn't green.
bygrinstow on Mar 17 '09
'zactly!
blue with green ftw
I'll try to do it this afternoon - the issue is going to be that it might make the shadow/reflection look funky.
Bottom version for sure- adding a halftone green hint to the puddle will make this a win. WIN.

ha! great pic!! the blue and green puddle work just as well as eachother, i agree, you should make it an option :) I'm not sure about the halftone though, I would leave it out :)
It's come a long way, but I'd say you're pretty much there. I'm not entirely sold on the green puddle, so my vote goes for the bottom design. It's a simple statement, yet the green glow starts to take away from it.
One thing to consider is the design of the reflection of the hat on the puddle. It seems really busy. Maybe taking down the amount of ripples might make sense. It's the reflection ripples that also make the green glow work less. Check out my latest if you've got a chance. Either way, this is a solid design. |
Thanks everybody for your help. Solid blue will be option one, the green puddle for option #2 I think. You guys ROCK! All your suggestions have been soooo helpful.
