hahaha nice one! my only one concern upon first look is that threadless already has a skull-faced dude riding a bike. the concepts are totally different. but thought you should be made aware!

yeah Im aware of it, and I was going to not have him riding a bike, but I think the concept is a lot different and the execution will be as well.



and the print is for the 12 month, not everyone can buy that one :)

Alex this is sexy! I love the little dog in the crate the most - I think making that dog super cute would add a lot to the dark humor of this design. Plus, I just love cute skeletal dogs. ;) It's also great that you have his black cloak all bunched up.



It would be sweet if you could add a cute little outfit underneath the cloak (Hawaiian shorts?!), and also if there was like... a backpack / picnic lunch tied to his sickle! Like he's off somewhere fun.



And I'm sure it's going to look tons different from that 12-month tee, so don't worry about that!

How about a moped? You can still give him a basket and handle bar tassels like a bike (and maybe even give him an extra dorky helmet), and then you wouldn't have to worry about it looking too much like Ladrones' design.

I wanted to go for a retro feel to it with the bike.

hey everyone, here is a new version :) took some suggestions, added some quick sketch detail etc.



I tried a moped, but I wasnt feeling it, so I stuck with the bike.



also I think Imma keep a regualr skull instead of the candy skull, didnt want to over do it, since there is going to be ton of detail already throughout the illustration.

Maybe you should try to create something like a death gradient... I mean, everything dies when he pass... maybe things to the right should be brighter and lively and everything looses saturation and life to the left, for instance, dead bird should be a little more to the back left... butterfly is just perfect (is it going to be disolving like ash? it would be awesome)

I love this idea. Really clever. I agree that you should move it back a little bit and show some more lively stuff in front of him. I would like the bony dog to have a tongue though. : ) Love the vintage bike and the happy feeling and the Hawaiian shorts OMG hilarious.

If you kept all of your sketches they would make an awesome flip book. love the progress so far, the details are really starting to pull this together. The shorts and flip flops are a great addition, as are all the little dead flowers and the bird. I guess even on his day off he's still got work to do. :D

I started drawing a picnic basket but I didnt like how there was two baskets on the bike, so I scratched that idea.



The triangle in the back is sorta liek the opposite of the all seeing eye, but it's detahs version, dunno I usually start thibking really deep into some of my work hahaha

Damn that is some sweet sketch. All these sketches by people who've got their things printed is making wanna go back to the roots and make all my submissions start out as full sketches and inked before putting on the computer. Very nice man.

There is so little to pick on here, it is near perfect. I would tuck the arm of the sunglasses over then behind his right cheekbone, it looks like it's about to fall off. I'm thinking a silver right now, but not really sure yet.

I think you should remove the triangle... at least until you figure out how you will color the sky.

If it's going to be a pleasent sunny day, I'd suggest baby blue instead of silver... a gray background will give the idea that it's a clowdy day.



Also, if the smoke is supposed to be a song coming out of his mouth... maybe some distorted notes are needed... right now it looks like his mouth smells.

Anyways, this design is amazing, if this doesn't get printed, the Threadless community has lost it's touch. I think it'd be great though, if when you inked in the vegetation there was some drying up/dead grass at the edge (you were probably already planning that). Also I think it'd be cool if there was a big white happy puffy cloud in the sky, behind which the sun was hiding. I jut get this feeling that once you get rid of the triangle there'll be a large empty space there. Oh well might just be me.

i think the bike is a little bit too perfect, everything els in the image is decaying somehow so maybe make the tires flat or something...



i almost wish he were riding one of those stick horses instead of the bike since death used to be thought of as riding some sort of dark horse.

baby blue is a good idea as far as the sky, only thing I dont like baby blue shirts that much, not my fav color, I usually try and design around a color I would actually wear. Ill see once I start messing with the coloring a bit more



I did a few other designs with notes etc like rocking robin I wanted to represent it a slighty different way. his singing does smell like death tho :) haha



and the bike is just metal so it doesnt have to be dead like other stuff, maybe Ill add some rust with the coloring thats a good idea, since he doesnt get a day off often.

yeah i can't really picture the baby blue shirt...i think if you just put some blue in the sky though it'd be cool. rust on the bike would be rockin'.

amazing! i love it. i think the sun should have "x"'ed out eyes though...and then the stuff coming out of the mouth is sort of coming out the left cheek right now...maybe make it more like it's coming out of the front....idk...it's not major.

yeah its sorta coming outta the side of his mouth didnt want to cover his face with it much at all, so I figure its sorta just ooozing outta his mouth and going towards the back of his head.

How do you get your line art looking like this??? There's no way you make this stuff using the pen tool in illustrator. Do you ink it by hand then just use live trace?

very cool. if you're not going to add color I'd suggest re-thinking the clouds position behind Mr happy death since now they are clashing with him and confusing the eye. a thinner line will also work to lower the volume on those clouds and bring your main subject into focus. Otherwise, extremely printable. crit mine?

Ethud L, I'm still adding color, probably will be an 8 color print, this is just the linework.

I dont think you need that many. your line work is excellent and this works well in BW. I would also try a subtle pallet in addition to the one your planning

I definitely think it needs color but it could be awesome to have in front of him lots of bright colors and in back of him black and white... Just a thought. I also agree about the "x" ed out eyes of the sun.

This is coming out nicely, id like it though if the line of flower extended further back into the horizon, i.e there is a bare patch at the back. The raindrops ideas sounds good, but only do it for the cloud thats behind him. Are you going to make the grass change from brown or grey to green , so its dieing like the plants?

Wow, this is looking amazing. I think Xed out eyes on the sun would be a mistake, the sense of fear he pulls off already is hilarious! I do think though that the cloud on the right could use repositioning, perhaps further to the right and up a little more? That's just me, whether you move it or not, I know this is gonna be printed. Can't wait to see the rest of the details inked in and then color later on.

this is a quick colored version, with flat colors, at this point Im mostly trying to figure out my color palette, what do you guys think,



and also need to make a few corrections to some aprts of the linework

id' paint the ground in a yellowish green fading from a brigter one to a darker and less saturated one. And i'd make a transition between the alive and dead flowers.

yeah the grass will be really detailed ;) right now just picking the main colors, Im thinking Imma use some of that brown, yellow and white for the grass as well for highlights and to give it that dead grass appereance

i really like it... i like the progression that went on too... that was pretty awesome.

it's still only about 20% done with the coloring, just seeing right now if anyone else had other suggestions as far as color. this is just the under color, sorting out the initial color pallette

....I hope you keep the colors more flat and less halftone. It really brings out your line work nicely. So far, stachegood!

the breath seems too dark and solid looking. the skele-dog sort of blends in with the basket for me too. maybe a yellow basket and red collar would do the trick. looking nice!

I would like the road to be some other color, something different than the color of his hat ... so it can make a little bit more contrast with the grass and the tires of the bike.

The grass and the flowers should be greener in the place where death didn’t pass yet.

Also, I would like the sun’s mouth to have some depth :)

Any way, that’s just my opinion.

yeah right now its just quick placement colors, the grass with have a ton more detial and Imma fix a few thigns still like the smoke coming outta his mouth, some stuff on the bike, the rust etc adding highlights, maybe a lil bit of halftones

a great ting to do is have the grass turning brown along with the flowers maybe you can try it out and use a different green.

This is looking great! When I first saw the original sketch, i did not like it, but with color I love it! I know you aren't done with the coloring but the dead flowers right now look flat. Just something to keep in mind when you are coloring :)

The colors look great, Alex! I like the fact that you didn't use the whole spectrum - shades of red, yellow, and grey look good together; I think you should keep it like that (keep cool tones like blue and green to a minimum.) I kinda wish the smoke coming out of his mouth was a bit less noticable - a lighter grey would be nice because from a distance it stands out more than his head. And as someone said above, I'd love for the change from barren wasteland to nice happy land be more dramatic!



The dog and scared sun are A+!

ounom - it would be cool in monotone but would lose like 50% of the detail that Im adding with the color. and Im all about that detail hahaha (but Im thinking of doing a one or two color sub, to try something different for one of my future subs)

Lookin awesome, man. As usual. Might be a bit too late to recommend, but it would be cool if the weather was changing as well..like sunny in front of him and thunderstorms behind him - a gradual progression like everything else..? Just a though.

looks great. I think the clouds are cluttering things up. how about a version without them? it would really help the quick read of this design. any advice for me?

Not sure this is getting better as you make it more complex... there is something REALLY great about your black and white V3/V4... I think the highlights are too much.

v3 is just the linework and v4 is super quick flat colors, Im thinking later on Ill try soemthign along those lines, just simple is not my thing I guess I love details too much haahha but Imma try somehting just black and white for one of my future subs

Looks fabulous Alex! Love the bleed-able hill and the glow of the sun. And it's great that you darkened the cloak!



The only thing I would pick at is that the smoke still seems a little too noticeable/harsh to me. It looks too solid to be smoke - more like a long pipe coming out of his mouth. I would keep the shading & the highlights but turn the dark grey lines into a light grey maybe.



But thats just my opinion! Totally submitable as it is, will 555555 it when it goes up!

your designs are simply incredible. I watched this and the robin and both are just great.

I also can't help but think of the poor robin when I see the bird on the grass there!

Regardless of how it fits on a shirt, I think the illustration is perfect.

thanx guys, i tried the smoke with the lighter color and I wasnt feeling it as much so Imma stick with this one I think as far as the smoke goes
