OH MY GOSH.
I friend wanted a tee shirt with boobies on it. Such a sick idea! :) |
HenDerSoN126 on Feb 23 '09
nice idea needs a lil work
HenDerSoN126 on Feb 23 '09
maybe a background

Too bad really, I think I like the graphics better in this version than in the pre-existing one.
Francesa on Feb 23 '09
Thanks for the heads up. The other was printed in April of '05. That's ancient history by now. I think I'll press on with this one and see what happens.

Skeletal Lamping on Feb 23 '09
Doesn't matter, you have WAY more than 8 colors
Francesa on Feb 23 '09
Simulated process is a photo printing method which uses color separation to reproduce all the colors in a design. It is easier (and less expensive) to use only eight which is why Threadless asks for designs in limited colors.
But they can and do print with over eight if the design is good enough. |

b33f3r on Feb 24 '09
someone did this already. check the sold out section. it was called blue footed boobies and was never in stock in any size for girls. everything was the same on their shirt except the color of the shirt. congratulations on not being original.
Francesa on Feb 26 '09
The "Unoriginal Police" got me.
Mea Culpa. I have never had an original thought in my life. And I bet you haven't either. Depending on where you want to set the parameters. |
oddreaper on Feb 26 '09
It's a great idea, it really is, and the graphics are very nice, but when such a similar design has already been printed, I'm not sure where it will go. While b33f3r said it in an unnecessarily nasty way, and all art is ultimately derivative, it doesn't bring anything new to the concept of wearing blue-footed boobies on each boob.
Not that you shouldn't pursue it, if you feel the idea is worth expressing. You should find your own angle. You say you've never had an original thought in your life: combine two unoriginal ones and give us a laugh for our $15. Two blue-footed boobies and a wild ass. Two blue-footed boobies and a fighting cock. You're good at drawing birds. Figure it out. Now get over here and lambaste me, if you have a moment. I want a whipping. I mean it. |
Francesa on Feb 26 '09
I was being sarcastic about never having any original ideas. But thank you, oddreaper for the honest critique instead of just a put-down. V2 coming up!

Now you know why the blue-footed booby has blue feet.
Next question: Does zinfadel go with boobies? |
colorthecloud on Feb 26 '09
hahaha this is awesome.
If it was more cartoony it would be cool to have them walking in blue paint, but I'm not sure if that would look good with all the details you've put into it. Looks amazing. Crit mine? http://www.threadless.com/critique/36830/A_Mystical_Ride |

its two photos photoshoped into that ilustration look?
dtran09 on Feb 26 '09
YES!
(while wearing the shirt) -- Stop looking at my boobies! Could you please critique Squid Medallion?--that'd be rad! |

oddreaper on Feb 26 '09
*jawdrop*
It's one of those situations where you can't immediately intuit the narrative, so your brain churns desperately to make one up, and you nod vigorously going "of course," not wanting to be the last person who doesn't get the joke. And I like that. Since it's two photos stuck together - and it's obvious that they are - they should be better incorporated. The boobies shouldn't be able to stand flat-footed on top of the grapes; they should sink in more. You probably don't want grapes to cover the feet (they are so very booby blue) but you don't want the photos to look hastily pasted. Thanks for your thoughtful comments, by the way, they were very much appreciated. This is how lame I am. |
dversdzn on Feb 26 '09
I think it's a great starting point and idea. Have you considered just using this as your base and illustrating the entire thing? bring this into illustrator and go to work with the gradient mesh tool... :D
If you get a chance I'd love some feedback. Lamb Shanks |
all the elements are great! hope to see it with more details on the junction of booby feet and grapes...if the design were illustrated in ai would be superb!!
iamabeast on Feb 26 '09
Haha this is pretty epic! Maybe have the birds with their feet inside the grape instead of on top. That way it wont look like one pic was just pasted on top of another.
please critique mine |
GoodKarmaKid on Feb 27 '09
basically, I think this is a pretty design and the colors are outstanding. maybe fix the flat feet. MAYBE some shadows around the bucket and liquid from the stomping boobies. take a look at mine?
I think it might work better as vector art
Francesa on Feb 27 '09
Okay, everybody saw the problem I saw too with the feet.
Stay tuned. V3 coming tonight! |
Illustration is awesome and you found a nice way to make it work.
I think birds legs should mix better with the grapes, and maybe some splatering on their lower fethers would help. Keep going! |
Francesa on Feb 27 '09
Bird feet better integrated.
Grape shadows on the tub (and more color too.) |
iamabeast on Feb 27 '09
this is better. i think that the feet of birds should sink into the grape even more.
GoodKarmaKid on Feb 27 '09
if you are using photoshop you could use some distort/displace filter action to bend the feet to the grapes. check out mine when you have the time.
NealJMD on Feb 27 '09
the posterization on the tub is too magnified and obvious, and they don't look like their squishing grapes. also, it seems like you have way more than eight colors.
Bio-bot 9000 on Feb 27 '09
i like this much better! even though i prefer your two boobies design to the printed one, this is a good original take.
Francesa on Feb 27 '09
Feet even better integrated. Barrel with more detail and a small shadow.
Wine glass added. You people are a tough audience. But I love you. |
R Thull on Mar 01 '09
like the concept and composition. the style is a bit mixed though. The blue boobies have finer detail than the barrel—which sort of looks like it was lifted from a vintage label and taken through a photoshop filter... Think I prefer without the wine glass. the burgundy color draws my eye too much. Good luck!
Francesa on Mar 04 '09
I went back and hand drew the entire thing and painted it with watercolor so the styles all match.
wow! illustration is looking awesome and the style is very consistent!

looks great! this is a 180 degree difference! have you tried it on other shirt colors? Not sure about the red.

Francesa on Mar 04 '09
Just because something had the same idea (basically) doesn't mean this has been done. The other shirt didn't have the detail this does. It didn't have the vat of grapes to explain why their feet were blue.
And it was done in 2005, four years ago, and sold out. I think it's time for an update. |
NealJMD on Mar 04 '09
This is gorgeous illustrations, so much better than the photoshop. The feet are really sinking in now. The pile of grapes in the back looks a smidge odd, maybe take some off. Also, where's the leftmost flipper? It might be nice to have a full on view of the foot bottom, maybe a smushed grape or even a bug.. very nice though. thanks for your critique.

cute!i think its ready to submit!
btw thanks for the crit |

hey good job!!! just use the same texture-style for the grapes so they don't look a lil strange in the illo anymore

DuckSucker on Mar 04 '09
This design looks great and the idea is awesome as well.
I think it's ready for submition. |
iamabeast on Mar 04 '09
i think it is different enough to sub from the other boobies shirt.
i like this idea and think it's good but i do think you're going to get flak from people about it being "too similar" (not that I think it is, people are just like that).
bygrinstow on Mar 04 '09
I was having a hard time thinking of what more there could be, but then an idea struck me (it still stings): If the feet are blue from smooshing the grapes, shouldn't there be some smooshed grapes to make that more emphatic? Otherwise, they're just standing on a bunch of grapes.
Thanks for the chance to say 'smooshing'... Also, I looked through your slogans ('cause I do that) and I had previously voted for 'all the answers' which I still like. : ) Would 'degree' work better as something like 'I have several degrees - 98.6 in fact.'...? Just a thought. |
notnorm on Mar 04 '09
Any shirt with boobies on it is a good start. I think the sketchy quality of the birds is great. I would add more of that to the grapes. Thanks for the Critique.
Ehud L on Mar 05 '09
looks great. and funny. I would suggest to try and show the effect of their stomping on the grapes. I want to the ones under their feet to strain and squash. make them more flattened. also, some grape juice squirts will be nice. good job
dannodepf on Mar 05 '09
nice grapes... the boobies don't have the same look still... too dark of outlines i think.
Braniel on Mar 05 '09
so awesome great work I hope it gets you some cash, please help me out
it looks great on red!
could you give the bucket a bit more shadow, it looks a bit flat. and try to get the grapes the same drawing style as the birds/bucket. (maybe adding some grapes on top that are actually squashed?) about to sub! |

great colors! i´m a fan of birds, and love this one. stepping on grapes.. beautifull.
ps: my english is awful.. :/~ great shirt. |

Yes, I agree with RedRobotMonkey, I want to see it on a lighter shirt, but not white. Maybe a pastel blue or purple or something warmer like sand or even gold to contrast with the blue tones. . .

Their name is possibly based on the Spanish slang term bobo, meaning "dunce", as these tame birds had a habit of landing on-board sailing ships, where they were easily captured and eaten.
