One of my best friends and I have been working on this and trying to get the simple concept across without over designing it. I would love to know your thoughts and how it could improve.
RAD_Design on Feb 18 '09
all the guitars that are not "mean" read as faces pretty well. The "mean" guitar....well it's face does not read well at all. Hard to tell that that eye is an eye at all at first glance. Shouldnt the "mean" guitar tower over the rest? He is the subject right?
Carixpig on Feb 18 '09
There's a good future here... maybe thicken up the outlines. The yellow guitar has a black outline but nothing else does - choose one or the other.
And I think it needs more balance. Just rotate the whole thing about 5 degrees anticlockwise so you remove the vertical lines of the necks. |

I changed the placement and made the Mean Guitars tower over the Keytar. Let me know what you think.
Poor Keytar! maybe their shadows should be looming over him, all scary like?
iamabeast on Feb 18 '09
yeah i agree with the above post. Also, fix the middle guitar's eyes so that he looks meaner. This is a cool idea, I really like it :)
notnorm on Feb 18 '09
I really like that the style of the red and brown guitars look like the kind of player that would own them. I'm sure you have some styles in mind for the other two but I cant figure out what they are. A flying seagulls hairdo would fit the keytar pretty well!
I would appreciate your opinion |

It looks like "Paul" is looking more at me then the victim.
Other then that, It's awesome sauce. Mutiny! |

Love the shadows. The tears are subtle. Maybe kick them into a more cartoony realm? I.e. flying in the air?
Rhodescholar on Feb 19 '09
Thanks for your comments I am afraid if I really try to work the hair on the keytar it won't be recognizable but would like thoughts on this idea.
HowdyHotDog on Feb 19 '09
Looks to me like the keytar needs a bit more personality, or character (what i mean are things like the hair you mentioned, or a piercing, or some accessory). If he/she were a person, you couldn't tell much about them (other than being sad). Everything else is super :) and thanks for the critique.
JDragon on Feb 19 '09
I like this and think its almost perfect, but yea the guitar in the middle looks like its looking more at me then at the keytar, and the tears should be more exaggerated.
PofZ on Feb 19 '09
ha! amazing idea. love it. but agree with the exaggerated tears. its kinda hard to see them right now.

I changed the hair, and added tears on the keytar. I hope this makes more expressive. I also changed the eyes on the red guitar. Thanks for all comments |

I don't know what happened with the process but it submitted 2 blank submissions you can look at Version 7 which is the same version as this.
I have changed the keytar hair so that it does not come over the top and think that it looks much better. please let me know your thoughts on the latest version. I appreciate all of the feed back I have been getting. |
pseudofemme on Feb 22 '09
i haven't read through all your other comments on so many versions, but are you consciously making all these guiters unplayable-looking? usually the strings would extend (at least in an abstract way) and attach around the "chin" area. the lack of this element makes them look "off" to me- but I love the soundhole mouth on the acoustic :) cute.
xcarnoxometzx on Feb 22 '09
Hmm the art work is good. I like how each guitar has a matching facial personality as opposed to just random faces. I also like the shadow. Maybe Im just being picky but something about the 'guitar' getting picked on just seems very very slightly off. I think he needs to be slightly at an angle so we could see his edges (the side cloesest to the viewer). But honestly that is a very very picky thing for me to pick out just because I think you have everything pretty much down and ready for submission. You could also try playing around with what color shirt it would work best on. Other than that this is ready to go. Good job man!
Please support my design and vote a $5 and leave an extra badass comment on it (haha I need the bump up). Oh and any help with recommending my design for others to vote would be awesome. Thanks man and hopefully I helped you out a little. Tortoise and the Hare |
xcarnoxometzx on Feb 22 '09
Oh and also I know there is no way to place the string on their face without making it look awkward so the way you have it is fine. It would be great if you could find a discrete way to place the strings there (if not only for the sake of being politically correct) Good luck and dont forget to support me!
Rhodescholar on Feb 22 '09
no one has mentioned that and I purposefully did it that way to get the personality and facial expressions of the guitars without putting lines on their faces. I thought that it would take away or distract if I put the strings down to the chins. And if I put them on their faces I would have to add pickups to their faces and I think that would really throw them off.
I think the art work looks really good - the place where I see a need for improvement is the concept - why are they mad at the keytar?
I understand the title - but I think they need a motive. |
Rhodescholar on Feb 22 '09
My last comment was directed to pseudofemme and not xcarnocometzx
xcarnoxometzx on Feb 22 '09
Yeah I understand why the strings werent there. Like I said its cool if you didnt add them. It doesnt take away from the artwork. Still think everything is spot on and ready for submission.
xcarnoxometzx on Feb 22 '09
Oh my bad lol I thought you took offense to what I said..... but either way the string are not essential, but rather for the sake of being politically correct (for those people, I know some, that are really anal about it)
Rhodescholar on Feb 22 '09
nathan. I think their motive is musical elitism. the keytar is a cheezy lame instrument that looks dumb on stage and produces lame music by lamer bands. I needed to have something to pick on and the keytar was the first thing that poped into my head other than a guitar hero guitar but with the problem of giving them faces I thought the buttons would not get the point across as to how it was different or why they might not like it.
that is a great point
Sofamonkeyz on Feb 23 '09
Interesting...I'd like to see more obvious story telling
I think they should be breaking the Keytar like the Clash album cover, or strangling it with a guitar string. Thanks for looking at my rabbit.
WAK O on Feb 23 '09
DESIGN IS COOL. KEEP THE BUTTONS SIMPLE THEY ARE OVER THE TOP
Rhodescholar on Feb 23 '09
WAKO How do you mean over the top? Should some be eliminated? I struggled with too simple or too much. When I eliminate them it almost looks as if there is a big something missing on the keytar but I also want people to see the face clearly. would love more feed back on that

I like the concept. Maybe you could make the guitar necks a bit longer though?
wigglefish on Feb 23 '09
The shadows are a bit distracting on the keytar. Maybe make them a little lighter??
pseudofemme on Feb 23 '09
sorry if this is painfully obvious, but they're guitars, and they're "picking" on him. picking. picks.
okay, i'm done. just a thought :) and i know why you avoided the strings going over the faces, but they just look weird with their necks like "stems" coming out of the tops of their heads.. maybe if the strings continued just a bit into their "hair" then faded away, rather than just being chopped off? |
xcarnoxometzx on Feb 23 '09
Good catch with the keys on the 'keytar.' Better look because of it not being so cluttered. Good job.

I dig the idea and the illustration is coming along nicely, I just don't get "mean" from the guitars. Maybe if their expressions were a bit more angry. Nice progress though.
