Hmm...the legs, eyes and branch could use more detail.
For the legs and eyes at least, maybe you could try to use the lighter blue tones to give some highlights? I love the shading of the bird itself though, beautiful style :) Score my submission? |
center placement on white or olive.
as far as colors, i think they could do that blue as a one color gradient. Maybe the eyes/feet a bright yellow |
Karisha on Jan 24 '09
I think the branch looks out of place being just an outline. Because you don't have any more colors to use I'd just eliminate it or try to find a way to make it work in blue. As far as placement goes I think he should be to the right somehow. Or centered.

Karisha on Jan 24 '09
oh and if you find a way to keep it make the branch bigger. I can see the branch coming across the body and the bird sitting on it where i mentioned before

more branch. I think it would be funny if you had him pooping on somebody's car.

I really like the sketchiness and the brightness of the blues, if you needed colours for the branch , then maybe you could knock off one of the blue higlights you've used, maybe the more turqouise-y blue arcing across his forehead, just to give space for a brown in there.
Its looking promising! I think centered on the chest would be good. |
yeah I think you can get rid of like two of the blues to work more shadows into the yellow, and the brach, haha cool looking bird tho
great illo Francesa, and I like your color palette, except for the yellow, in this case is a little bright for me, in the legs.

ahh, i've finally found you! lol i'd say, draw in some sketched cherry blossoms without color. i would say get rid of the gradient in the bird but the color looks sooo cool! good job! i think i've perfected my songbird. check her out pls! http://www.threadless.com/critique/35748/song_bird

The branch can be longer, to the bottom of the tee if you like.
murky78 on Jan 25 '09
this is really cool. i love the color and grumpy's expression.
i'd like to see it go all the way to the bottom, grumpy seems to be floating still, also maybe a little smaller... i'd love some feedback on mine http://www.threadless.com/critique/35732/Splotchy_Castle |
Francesa on Jan 27 '09
Bluebird a bit smaller on the shirt. Trunk extended.
IAmTheSea on Jan 27 '09
hehe he's so chubby :). Why are his feet blue? It be funny if his "arms" were crossed but that might be too much. Adorable.
toopersent on Jan 27 '09
I like the expression, but perhaps you could have the trunk of his perch wrap around the back so it doesn't end so abruptly?
return the love? |
sharka on Jan 27 '09
The branch could be longer and go all the way to the bottom of the t-shirt. Other than that i looks great.
Wanna check mine out? |
Karisha on Jan 28 '09
I love how this is coming along! This is definitely the best so far. I can't think of anything else that could make it any better besides maybe playing with adding another shoot somewhere lower on the branch with a couple more leaves.

The tree seems much to contrasted compared to how shaded the bird is...

grumpygremlin on Jan 28 '09
to be honest a bit bored of bird tees

DinosaurVoodoo on Jan 28 '09
The styles of the branch and the bird dont fit nicely, make the branch and itll be killer
if you get a chance crit my new version http://www.threadless.com/critique/35886/SnakeWine thanks :) |

Final. Unless several somebodies want a spilled cup of coffee down below the bird.
That's like a really famous photograph. Are you sure you aren't breaching any copyrights by using it?
Francesa on Jan 28 '09
I believe the photo you're thinking of is of an eastern bluebird in a snowstorm. This one is a mountain bluebird. He's mad too, but the angle and coloring and even the expression to some extent are different. I really wish I had taken that mad bluebird picture. The guy retired on the money he's making from that one photo.

fyi you can use as many colors as you want and just indicate that it should be a simulated process print. I'm guessing the reason the tree is rather lacking in depth and the feet are blue is because you want to adhere to the 8 color limit.
Francesa on Jan 28 '09
Well... yes. Besides the challenge of making an excellent work with a limited color palette, there is the fact that the fewer colors, the cheaper it is to print. If an eight color design and one of equal rating using simulated process were to come before the Threadless decision board (All of whom I love dearly!) the eight color actually has an edge.
True but you might have trouble getting your foot in the door currently as the branch is visually separate from the bird in terms of style.
AlexPLeith on Jan 28 '09
I agree with Kookaberry.
I think that the two different styles clash. I like the tree, I like the bird, just needs to be of a similar style. jump right in... |
Francesa on Jan 28 '09
Thanks. I'll work on it some more.

I agree with AlexPLeith too. Thanks for commenting on my t-shirt design, I decided to keep the artist:) BTW, I loved your slogans.

Sweet, totally a great idea. I think the tree looks a little too small for the bird.

i'd rather have the bird near the bottom of the shirt, no branch.. and maybe a... plate of eggs next to him?
seriously, though. there is a clash of styles. the bird is just fantastic.. love him! |
Francesa on Feb 03 '09
I've had several comments that the style of the bird and tree don't match. I don't understand, so I posted a close crop of both so someone can explain to me how they don't match.

Awe I love this!
I cant say I see anything you should fix. It looks amazing. :) |
fair_rakel on Feb 03 '09
I think maybe it's because the tree appears to be outlined whereas the bird isn't. What if you did a brown that was a little darker than the branch, likewise for the leaves... just add some additional dimention to them. Looks great by the way! Although the tree looks like it should be doubling over from the weight of the bluebird.
everett mcglinka on Feb 03 '09
your bird contains far more layers of colour (highlight, midtone, shadow) than the tree, I think that may be the complaint. Perhaps adding a midtone to the bark would silence the masses.
Looks really nice on a tee, though. |
Francesa on Feb 03 '09
Ah Ha! Thanks!
I thought about making the tree just a branch large enough for the bird. But its amazing how small a branch a bird can land on. I guess because of their hollow bones. |
fair_rakel on Feb 03 '09
Oh, I realize that may be a challenge with the limited color palette. My only thought on that is maybe you could try doing some halftones with the blues instead of using 4 different blue colors, that way you can add a brown in there. You might be able to use some blue half-tone on the leaves.
Francesa on Feb 03 '09
I tried a darker brown on the tree and hated it on sight. I'll see what half tones will do. (Leaves also).
But it will have to wait for tomorrow. I'm beat. Thanks for the help all. |
Francesa on Feb 04 '09
Different branch. More detail on the leaves.
hellomynameis___. on Feb 04 '09
the branch looks a little thin for the big bird and id hate that to take awaay from the design because the bird is beautiful
Help me out? |
Francesa on Feb 05 '09
The too thin branch is now broken and the bluebird has a reason to be grumpy.

Last chance to comment before I sub this.
A big THANK YOU to all who did already! |

Where should the little grump be on the shirt?
What color shirt?
More branch? Less? Flowers or leaves?
I'm already at eight colors, so the branch may have to be sketched.
