This is so cool, love it! Will 5$

except I wouldn't make it pixelated, just do it in a regular, clean style.

really like the idea disagree that pizelation is perfect either has tto be very so it looks video gamey go for this with text as well or realistic at the mo just looks fuzzy
but great idea check out minehttp://www.threadless.com/critique/29600/rawr#v5 |

Love the concept. Understand why you're going with the pixelated look - just not sure it works here. It's damn close. Maybe a little less pixelation? And can the snowman look a little bit more like it got its ass kicked. I remember in the game how the character that lost looked was leaning over and swaying to to the side.

totally breaking copyright here.
MALES on Oct 07 '08
i dont think its breaking copyrights at all.
its just a ninja and the words finish him, not mentioning mortal kombat or sub-zero |
squatterjohn on Oct 07 '08
I wonder if they'll be able to retain the pixel-effect with the simulated process because it has that halftone quality to it. It looks good on screen though.
robknaggs on Oct 07 '08
it may be better if you get a hyper clear image and then half tone it will keep a sort of pixelated look without looking just fuzzy??
check out mine (rawr) |
Hilarious!
I don't know about having the snowman look like he just got his @$$ kicked... his indifference is part of what makes it so funny to me. I'm wondering how it would look if there were status bars at top that showed that the snowman was about to die... |
why not just get a clear image and apply a pixelated effect like I've done? Halftones would look completely wrong. And fuzzy.
I agree it needs work, but what you see is really quite close to the mortal kombat 2 look. sj - it won't have the sharpness of the on-screen image, but sim process would still recreate this image really well on fabric and retain the pixelated look. |
I'm starting to thing that this will never get to a point where most people like it because so many can't see past the immediate crappiness of the pixelation. To most it will just look like a bad image, so it probably won't score well. But I have faith in the concept!
And I don't want to make the snowman beat-up because he isn't fighting him. That kind of the thrust of the parody. |
I didn't see your comment! Thanks Priscilla :)
squatterjohn on Oct 07 '08
Am I getting the joke right?
Sub Zero has almost built a Snowman and the thing says Finifh Him! and in order to finish him, he is putting the carrot nose on, hence finishing the snowman? He isn't beat up, because he hasn't been beaten up, right? He's made him. |
I think that I avoided the status bars for the same reason that I didn't make the snowman beat-up. I may revisit it though, thanks.
Ohhhhhhhh... squatterjohn completely cleared that one up for me. I thought he was holding a knife or something. What if he were holding something more obvious like a top hat? So there's no way to miss the joke?
exactly sj! lol
I see what you mean Pris. If that's a problem then I'll change it. You're the first person to mention it, but perhaps that's what a lot of people are seeing/getting.
squatterjohn on Oct 07 '08
Like Frosty the Snowman, once that hat goes on he'll come to life.
hmmm. I thought the carrot really lent itself to a martial stance. The fact that it has to be stabbed into the face kind of supports the theme in a macarbre sort of way. But if I can make a hat work and it helps people to understand better than a carrot, then I'll do that.

Looks very similar to Sub Zero. Is it the same character from mortal combat?

chemicalflava on Oct 07 '08
I think the thing that is making it look like a shitty pixelation filter is the percentage hues. The gradation to gray is what's bothering me (plus this would only work on a gray shirt of the exact same hue as what is on screen). The classic Mortal Kombat games used "cut out" sprites on backgrounds. Perhaps if it looks like the programmers used an existing stance and just put a carrot in his hand, the idea would look better. Also, they used faux volumetric shadows.
chemicalflava on Oct 07 '08
The existing stance thing is kind of already implemented, I know. I just mean pushing that idea. Maybe the carrot is completely in front or behind his hand.
I can quite easy fix the cutout thing. I know what you mean - hopefully fixing that will improve it. cheers. I want it too look like he is holding the carrot to be honest.
i botched that shadow together yesterday. I wanted a realistic one, but I'll have a go at trhe MK style shadows. Thanks again.
Sorry if you answered this Aled, I didn't read all the comments... If it is process color, maybe you could add a background? It's not going to cause you any more trouble and I think it will make the design better as a whole. And, personally, I feel like they are too pixelated as it stands now. Maybe having a background will take away from that.

chelly on Oct 07 '08
oh man, i totally thought it was a battle. like...the way little kids destroy snowmen.
i do like your take on it though. a top hat would help a bit. really though, i can't think of anything specific that would draw the line between creating and destroying. |
chemicalflava on Oct 07 '08
I'm kind of a purist when it comes to video game design. If you're going to do it, go all out (is my attitude). I can understand why you want to make it look like he's holding the carrot, it's just not authentic in the sense that is not how the game would look. But it is such a small detail, I don't think that would trip you up. I think one of the biggest things bothering me about the way the carrot is in his hand is that you have the percentage hues on that too.
The shadows should be pretty easy. Make a mask in the shape of the fighter, warp it so it's a shadow, apply black fill, rasterize with the most contrast possible (to prevent % hues). |
New version with cutout sprite!
It's much harder to do that I though it would be. |

joecool933 on Oct 07 '08
it may not be copyright, but did you draw those things yourself? otherwise it isn't your original work and therefore can't be submitted. Dont get me wrong, i like it. I just dont think they will allow it. Love the added hat by the way.

I found the images and painted and editted the shit out of them. So they're my images now.

Or be quite impartial to it.

mr.button on Oct 07 '08
i like the concept and i understand why you're going for the whole pixelated look, but i just think it'd be a lot more visually pleasing if it was just a smooth vector
Great idea but the jagged edge in this one kind of looks to me like you've got a lo res image and cut it out in photoshop - which i'm sure is not the look you're going for... Maybe it's white background? I think I prefer version 2 - though the text looks better in this one.
chemicalflava on Oct 07 '08
It wouldn't be as conceptually pleasing, though.
It's a toss-up. Concept vs. visual. Perhaps there is a happy medium? |
I'm always learning!

I like how people are telling you how Threadless works.
Is this most recent version close to what you're planning on submitting? |
Still some to come methinks
I agree with David T. Parts of it look great - noteably the um...his clothes whatever you call those and the hat. But his right thigh and the outline of the snowman looks oddly shaped.
Oh also the font is great. I'm horrible at putting all my thoughts in one blog post, I'm sorry.
You freestyle it. It all helps.
squatterjohn on Oct 07 '08
I think, (I have no idea for sure, I know nothing about printing) but I think the jaggedness now might carry over better to a t-shirt as it's easier to see the pixellation around the edges which make it look more pixellated overall I think.
I'm pretty sure that intellectual property rights are still violated if the concept is so similar. I could be wrong, but just because you paint over a picture of a Corvette doesn't mean you aren't violating the property rights of Corvette. It really depends on the company and how purposeful they are in protecting their intellectual rights.

I find red words on a red shirt to be a tad strange
i think it would work better on a light colored shirt.
It's good and fun, but a bit below your usual pun standard and the execution, kinda makes it look a cheapo shirt you'd get off the market, just pulling the graphics straight out of the game. If you could put it on a scene, then that might make it work a little better, but I don't think it'll print.
Yeah, I had a feeling that was the way of it. Thanks for the feedback, I think I'll retire this one for now!

I'd like to apologise for my random comma usage.

You can never use too much punctuation.

I think the carrot is wayyyyyyy more effective than the top hat.

Ignore the shitty typography. If I do anything with this - I'll most likely hand-draw the letters. Even though the original typography is shocking anyway.
