Is this awesome (Y/N) ?



It would be belt printed (all the way around), once for glow in the dark stars, and again for the planets and orbits (all in one color).



Things I have thought about adding/changing:

*text for planet names

*solid orbits

*bigger asteroid belt

*moons and moon orbits

*more spread out planets (to the sides and back)

*plain 'ol circles for planets

Hey, I think it's a great idea that your doing glow in the dark stars... I'm not to sure about the astroid belt though, it's a bit too dense I think. I think your stars could be a bit more varied in size as well, so maybe if you did that it would probably be alot softer on the eye.



I think your moon orbit is a good idea as well, no text for planet names though. And I'm sure you have enough colours to put a bit more shading on each of the planets as well.

The reason I only used one color is that it'd be belt printed (to make the orbits go all the way around), and apparently, it's hard to line up more than one color. I might try using traced bitmaps for the planets, to get more detail that I can't draw by hand.



I'll work on the asteroid belt though, thanks for the feedback!

I changed up the asteroid belt to be a bit more spread out. Also, the stars are bigger and there are a couple glow-in-the-dark galaxies too (I played a lot of Spore last week).

i think the planet orbits are fine being dotted but maybe the "dots" can be more varied like a 1 - 3 - 1 patter (short dash , long dash, short dash) so they don't just look like the stars (dots). just an idea you can play with.



Also, i think it would be just too busy if you added moons and their orbits.... but maybe a comet or 2 would be nice.

I like the idea. The asteroid belt is nice, the density looks good fixated in a strip. as far as belt prints go, it's a pretty solid idea.



I think you have too many meteors/comets. Lose a couple.

Other than that. Great idea.

personally i dont like the comets that much, it makes it feel like too much is going on. But i do love the t-shirt. And i think you should, as you said previously, trace the planets to get them a little more realistic looking. Jupiter looks a little strange haha. Then again you can tell what each planet is so it hardly matters...

But all in all i would say its awesome, and ready for submission!

hey this is cool , the colors and the whole work but may be if you just tilt the uranus in a way that it looks stable, it would be nice..

and the comets are bigger, show them small and far and may be with one tail..

I did go a bit crazy with the comets, but Inkscape makes it so easy to clone like crazy (drag and press space to stamp). I do like how they look though, so I might leave some small ones on the back of the shirt or something.



Yeah, Jupiter does look kind of shabby. I kinda drew it by hand with a whole bunch of that path morphing tool, so it doesn't look as nice as the other planets. I'll fix it in the next version.



Also, VSG, what do you mean by tilt Uranus? It really does have that tilt (well, according to Wikipedia). I guess I could take out the rings, but then Uranus looks kind of boring, bein' a big ol' light blue ball an' such.

P.S. I thought up an idea for a hoodie version that I found to be somewhat silly. I'll try to post a picture next time too.

I touched up Jupiter from an actual photograph, traced by Inkscape.



I'm not sure Threadless would be able to make two fabric hoodies, but I thought it would be kinda cool, with the Sun to establish the meaning of the design better.

The stars, comets, and galaxies would be in glow-in-the-dark ink, belt printed (all around the shirt).



The planets, orbits, and asteroid belt would also be belt printed to circle around the shirt. (Pluto is on the back, he's still cool)

I like this. It needs some polish tho. It might just be your presentation rather than the actual design. Just have the front and back right next to each other without the stuff in the background. Hit me back if you want.

The reason I made the presentation with the upside down person is to show the way it's constructed: the solar system with the head as the sun (heliocentric), and the planets' orbits projected onto the t-shirt.



By showing the rest of the orbits and asteroid belt, I thought it would show how the design wraps around the shirt.



I guess it looks kind of weird though. It'd be a lot better if I could get models from the side (to show the orbits wrapping around), but the submission pack doesn't give any. I might try drawing some people, but unfortunately that's not something I'm particularly good at.



I'm glad the gif animation worked though. It seemed the best way to communicate the fact that the stars were glow-in-the-dark, with out putting more text on the presentation (see previous versions for how ugly that got).

Awesome! I would totally buy it. I think it has improved much especially in the presentation.

Planets look too flat for my liking, they need more shading to demonstrate sphericity.

Unfortunately, I'm stuck with the flat planets. With belt printing, it's hard to line up multiple colors for shading, so I traced them as best as I could in one color. I guess I could do half tone shading, but that would muddle the design a bit, I think.

P.S. I thought up a good way to present the belt printing without the upside down person, which some people don't like. I'll try to post a new presentation version sometime today.

This is a really cool idea, can you show us a close-up detail?

The very first version has close ups of all the planets, and some of the later versions have bigger tshirts to look at the stars and asteroid belt. Jupiter changed, though, so you'll have to kinda squint at the later versions for detail. Sorry!

This isn't quite as artsy or cool as the last version (in my opinion), but it explains the design better. I just wish I could draw 3d t-shirts better. Or had a copy of flash (for multiple slides). That'd be cool too.

Still awesome anyways, i say submit. (:

Thank you! I think that presentation does a lot on threadless, when most people only look at a design for 5 seconds or so before picking a number. It was also a challenge as my design is not just a picture on a shirt, it's the whole shirt itself.



One more thing! (A'chaaa! Jackie!): Here are all the planets in an easier to digest PNG format.

This is just an improved version of v5. Somehow, it just feels better than v6. Something about composition.



In case it's not clear, the orbits and asteroid wrap all the way around the shirt. see v6 for a pseudo 3d version of the t-shirt.

That's a really cool design. I like how you have the glow in the dark idea. Good job.

I do have a question for anyone who has submitted a design. What is the best time to do so?



I was thinking Sunday night or Monday morning. My logic is that since the newsletter goes out on Monday night, more people visit the site then and my design would be at the top of the list. Submitting it a bit early would have it approved by then. However, I don't really know how long it takes for them to approve designs.

I've had designs approved anywhere from four days to seven days. I would say if you want it to be approved and put into the voting process on a Monday, submit it on a Monday.



I'm so sad Pluto isn't on there . . . *tear.
