By the way - the intention from the outset has been a 1 or two colour design. Silhouettes on a sky/light blue tee.
Just fishing for more ideas really, at the moment, Any suggestions appreciated!
iEatArt on Sep 03 '08
interesting idea, do they have to be just silhouettes, there are a lot of design with just silhouettes. I think you need to have a person looking at them or its just a load of random things on a shirt.
i also think they should all be things that can fly, not a karate guy or a fish (unless its a flying fish). |
No - this is not what it will look like. It will be ordered and labelled. Like a reference guide.
LOL @ R. Kelly not making the cut. I dig it. One suggestion would be to have numbers in each object and a list somewhere (small) on the shirt so people can identify them.
exactly, fp. That's what I'm planning. :)
iEatArt on Sep 03 '08
ok, cool that sounds much better. i think include r kelly.
Haha. I am in dubious image rights ground I think. With Jordan, Evel, and possibly even Superman... not sure if I will actually be able to use their names.
Flying squirrel could be fun.
Also maybe a frisbee.
Otherwise the airplane's kind of out of place cause everything else is a critter. Ooh a kite too could balance it out?
NEEDS MOAR R KELLY
If people can laugh at R. Kelly and not be put off by his inclusion, then he's in.
How are you gonna show r kelly? The man doesn't have a very identifiable silhouette methinks, but i guess you could have him with a thin stream coming from his silhouette to a another smaller female on below him!
How about: an actual fly, midget tosses, old grandfather clocks (you know, when you wanna see time fly), time flying (numbers with wings), jetson cars with the big domes, the fly of your jeans, bullets with butterfly wings. |
haha. Nice suggestions, FA. I want to stick to things that you would be able to see in the sky from a distance though, so I'm avoiding tiny things. I think Robert Kelly would just be a silhouette of the big man with his arms outstretched (a la 'I believe I can fly' video) and a label underneath with the name R Kelly. No minors need be involved.
stewart1985 on Sep 03 '08
ok... i don't see the stealth bomber, but I do see a shark!?!
PS. You could have a wee comment at the back of the tshirt saying "No minors were harmed in the making of this tee" |

The flying fish should actually look like a real one, they do exist!
Flying squirrel?
hot air balloon? Kite?
Icarus?
Dragon? Magic Carpet? Rocketman? Rocketeer? |
great suggestions, one and all. I will be trying out a bunch of them. Dacat - I realise there is an actual 'flying' fish, but I thought there was comedy value is having the silhouette of a run-of-the-mill fish and explaining it away as a flying fish. Perhaps I need to revaluate that one! :)

Love the idea... I also love especially rsj's idea for flying mario.
I would love to see this printed, I would definitely buy it. What about a guy doing a dive bomb? A fat guy. |

this is guna be awsome, i think ont eh actual shirt you should keep the bike away from the motorcyce though, they're to similar
looking feed back, don't if you don't want to http://www.threadless.com/critique/27754/Monkeys_In_A_BArrel |

helium balloon salesman, ski jumper, skateboarder and time...

Hover board and chitty chitty bang bang.
hehe, your crits are always much the entertaining. |
Me me :P Do you want to add on flying carpet?
Haha. Sorry, FM. You didn't make the cut. More great suggestions. I'm also thinking Peter Pan, Mary Poppins and the Bed from Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
I'm thinking these might all be copyright issues though. |
Hey! I haven't added any more objects since last time, but I thought I'd demonstrate kind of what I was thinking for the presentation. It'll be with numbers, or name labels.
FYI: 1. Bird 2. Plane 3. Superman 4. Flying Pig 5. Dracula (in bat form) 6. Witch 7. Evil Flying Monkey 8. Penguin with jetpack 9. Flying Fish 10. Flying Kick 11. Boy with Extraterrestrial on Bicycle 12. Pegasus 13. Stuntman 14. Famous Basketball Player 15. Angel Gabriel |

I like this but it reminds me of another shirt that was printed, I don't have the link, it was all birds. maybe it will print anyway, it's a good idea

crit mine please?
http://www.threadless.com/critique/27497/Ocean_Adventure#lastcomment |
Are you sure you weren't thinking of a bird spotting book?
Is there a way to make it not so squared? I may also be thinking of bird spotting books but I seem to recall occasionally seeing silhouetted diagrams like this that nevertheless vary the object in size somewhat and add a bit of a stagger i.e. more of a circle-y jumble rather than rows and columns.
noelhathorn on Sep 04 '08
No, there is a bird version, bu it is combined with a pattern underneath. Here
I'd make the numbering position more uniform....so it is always the same....OR drop the white background for them and make the whole thing slightly less regular. |
Also, this may not be a problem because most people may not be as huge of nerds as I am, but I don't see a penguin with a jetpack. I see a penguin with one of those underwater cameras glued to them that scientists use to measure Antarctic water temperatures and study the ocean and whatnots. They actually look nearly identical. Any way to have a flame coming out of the jet-pack that makes it actually look like a flame?
aled -firstly, you cannot not include a fly in this.
secondly, the flying fish looks more like a shark right now. finally, please add something completely ridiculous like a flying skyscraper |
red bull !

Hahah - thanks for your inputs, everyone. I'm not bothered about that Field Study one. It's a cool design, but only like this in so much as they both use silhouettes.

can you make the stuntman do a trick? so his legs show more?
and what? no spaceship?! |
Well - the stuntman is actually Evel Knievel. But I can't use his name.
But I will call him 'a daredevil' now instead of stuntman. |
supertrooper74 on Sep 04 '08
I like flying nun as a choice. Also, I immediately saw a penguin with a jetpack without reading that that's what it was. I like them laid out in a grid pattern, as they would be in a text book. I do agree that the flying fish looks like a shark though.
King_Of_Diamonds on Sep 04 '08
great idea, i would change up the placement
or add one more to make it 4 complete rows |
Hmmm, the flying fish silhouette would be a better head scratcher, then the plain ol' fish you got there, but I see your point too.
If you could arrange some of the items so that the stealth bomber is outlined a little (but still completely invisible), that would be awesome. (Is stealth bomber still gonna be listed?) |
I've changed up the fish
will post the new version in a bit. Thanks for the feedback guys, its been really helpful |
Ok...
1. Bird 2. Plane 3. Superman 4. UFO 5. Flying Fish 6. Flying Pig 7. Flying Kick 8. Flying Dutchman 9. Pegasus 10. Witch 11. Evil Flying Monkey 12. Dracula (In Bat Form) 13. Pterodactyl 14. Juvenille Elephant With Feather 15. Boy And Extraterrestrial On Bicycle 16. Lost Boy 17. Daredevil 18. Stealth Bomber 19. Famous Basketball Player 20. Santa 21. Magic Carpet 22. English Nanny 23. Angel Gabriel 24. Penguin With Jetpack |

SANTA!!!
^5 on stealth bomber being lighter ... for stealthiness |
Haha. Thanks guys. I was actually going to have nothing for Stealth Bomber, but I know people would ask where the stealth bomber was. :\
I was also playing with the idea of having the stealth bomber in UV ink, so that it would appear and disappear. It would be a whimsical addition, rather than a concept carrier. |
Thanks man. Now the question is, do I swap R Kelly in for one of them. There was a ground-swell of support for the dodgy crooner at one point..
Now I'm in the closet too. |
no R.Kelly, I like it as is! Stealth bomber in UV is GOLD!
I can imagine this would also look good in the shape of a UFO (getting rid of the small UFO)
rsj on Sep 04 '08
I still like my Raccoon Mario from Super Mario Bros. 3 idea but I can see how it would be difficult to put it in with everything you already have.
supertrooper74 on Sep 04 '08
I think there are too many Disney flyers...Dumbo, Peter Pan, Mary Poppins, and Aladdin.
2 are literary characters 2 are Disney. And anyway, Disney is pop culture. They are pretty iconic and it makes sense to include them.
lol@
19. Famous Basketball Player Any one we wanna pick? Nice job here, but get it up to fifty!!!! |

Haha. Thanks guys. Yeah, Yoshi- The idea for number 4 was a bit of silliness. I figured that to have a flying saucer listed as a Unidentifed Flying Object on a chart which is mean to be identifying it would be loltime. :/
ah yes... a flying saucer
ok, i shut my mouth |
Chachita on Sep 05 '08
all those that are well known as peter pan or dumbo or mary poppins or et.... are copyright free?
well, they're just silhouettes, and I don't name the characters. I guess I'll have to ask Fredless.
squatterjohn on Sep 05 '08
Copyright in Peter Pan lapsed in 1987, but a special act was written granting the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children - which had inherited the rights in J. M. Barrie's will - to retain royalties from any performance of the play or derivative works indefintely but not to retain creative control. However it is hotly debated now, 71 years after Barrie's death, now that English copyright law is in line with that of the EU of 70 years after the author's death, whether this law can be enforced internationally or even in Britain any more.
Aladdin was a story from the traditional Arabian nights and is therefore public domain. Even though he's been in a Disney movie. The Wizard of Oz (book) is public domain. Dumbo, Mary Poppins and ET are not. But Threadless has printed Mary Poppins and ET in silhouette before (Para Poppins, Calling Home). At least two other t-shirt sites have printed parodies of ET in the flying bike (Busted and Go Ape). We have to hope the same goes for ambiguous elephant silhouettes. It's probably a sketchy area if public domain characters look too similar to their film incarnations. But I don't think you've done anything overtly copyright-infringing. But I would change Superman to Superhero. (I'm assuming the text will be on the shirt.) Will the text be on the shirt? |
Wow - Thanks John! The Superman name was my only real concern. Yeah - the text will be on the tee. I'll have to ask Threadless if there would be any copyright issues.
I think quite often in these cases, it's a judgement call.

Love the stealthy Stealth. http://www.threadless.com/critique/27752/I_Heart_Starfish |

the pig looks a bit thin in the tummy area. I like that the stealth is not a full black shape.
pixelfactory on Sep 05 '08
Playing a little devil's advocate, but I think the Stealth Bomber in UV calls too much attention to it. I understand that it is "stealthy" but it is not even slightly invisible. Otherwise I really like the concept.

Famous basketball player could be moved to #23, considering michael jordan is the most famous player and that was his number. subtle.

Oh. That's a bloody class idea.
Thanks, Slim xxx |

It would have been a crime to miss that. Thanks again!

if that's the case then the angle should be #7 and santa should be #24

and Check out my latest Critique Please: Strange Neighbors
Haha - I like your thinking, Bort, but I wast to keep line 2 intact because they are all 'Flying...' somethings
should 22 and 13 be swapped to get all the movies on one line? or 13 goes to 11 and 11 goes to 22 so 22 can go to 13. ;-)
Yeah - I did consider that, but I thought if they were clustered too close together, people would think that it was a Disney shirt. Someone already mentioned it and I want to avoid that really.
Submit for sure!
finally submitted my design and i thought 4 critiques was a lot - haha you're nuts! have you submitted this yet?? not sure if i like the titles underneath but LOVE the concept, as always. i wanna collab!!
