Not feeling is never the right answer.

This is the second version of this design. The first had patterns and designs forced on it. In this design I decided to keep the overall look consistent. Just illustration, no trendy patterns. I am also trying to push the conceptual side a little stronger.

Id like to see this without that thick outline around everything.

no need for the bird, i wouldnt add it doesnt seem to add anything to the design.

the elipses of water should probably be more organic .

nice start.

this is a crazy design i'd buy it and thinks it would have a good chance of getting printed. although to me, it doesn't matter if u keep the bird or not.

i like this one a lot...but i feel the same way about the bird not adding anything to the design.

This design is awesome! But both the bird and the skeleton don't seem to fit. Just an opinion however. = )

Love it!

you could have the bird resting on his shoulder... that might look cool, if not, I'm excited for when its done, and I hope it wins, I want this as a shirt

This is nice but the one you submitted before was amazing! I think this ruins the novelty of the first shirt.

Crit mine plz.

I've learned alot of cool things with half tone. Go into photoshop and use the airbrush with black selected. Then go up to Image , Mode, and change the design to Grayscale and then change it again to a bitmap. It will give you first a resolution option. This one you want to be high (400?) Then you select the angle and the frequency. Play around with the angle but the frequency you want to be pretty low so that you can really see the dot (15?) At the bottom there is a scroll that gives you the option to do the halftone as an elipse, line, diamond, square, circle. Try selecting the circle or line that's my favorite. Then if you have Illustrator CS3 you can just import the image in there and it should be big enough to do a clean live trace on. There you go. Good Luck!

Thank you for the compliment. It is hard to please such a large audience and the majority of people on Threadless seem to favor a solution in this direction. I liked the first one too but I think layering grungy elements is seen as being something that is on its way out within this community.

this is awesome. but i would be curious to see what it would look like without the skeleton, cuz ur background is really strong and could probably be a shirt all on its own. great style. print it.

Amazing design, submit.

This may seem odd, but the skeleton looks almost too clean against the dirty clouds and the runny water. Unless that was what your going for. And if thats the case I would submit it. It looks great how it is in my opinion.
olbeardy
olbeardy on Jul 12 '08
There is actually a textural yellowish rusty wash bleeding down the skeleton as well. It's a little subtle and I'm just now noticing that you can't see it very well in this image. The actual design shows more consistency in the look of the clouds and the skeleton. Thank you for pointing that out.

Overall looks very nice and cool. I'd say submit. But i think the bird is not necessary.

Thx for the comments anyway.

Very cool. My only comments are to nix the bird. I'd probably lose the halftone too. it's a little trendy.

Other than that it's a go.

There's some good ideas here, i agree that the bird isnt needed (but it looks good, maybe for another design). I find the halftone a bit superfluous, but i liked the paterns you used for your previous design, i realise you're trying to go for something different here though. Other than that its good mate, sub it.

Very cool design, might be my monitor but whe the dark brown is in the background could maybe be a little different, there's a bit that sticks out into the centre that has a really harsh edge, maybe if you lined it up with the water above it would look better?
olbeardy
olbeardy on Jul 13 '08
Thanks. That bleeding texture is actually supposed to be the shirt color. I should have matched it up better when I imported it into photoshop. You actually wouldn't see that shape.

It's a very cool design, but I'm concerned it may not be the type of thing threadless is after. They very much like indie-ish art, and this in my opinion looks a little too urban for this site.

That being said, if you toned down the contrast and maybe rethought the colour scheme to be lighter (though I know that doesn't go with the theme of the pic) :\ it could work.

I would wear this as is because I really like it, but if you want it to win, you should probably "conform" a bit more to the threadless style.

This is a really awesome design, I like how the environment adds depths to his expression. His finger still looks like is should be holding something, but I still love it.

I appreciate your comment. If Threadless doesn't pick this design up I have some other people who will sell it. I know threadless has a very niched style, but I also know that they know art comes in different forms and styles. People on these forums sometimes diss on work that looks like it is following "mall trends" and not being original or authentic, but this site has some styles that have been beaten to death as well. Hopefully there is demand for something different. I feel this piece is concept driven and not like what I have seen at the mall. But whatever happens happens I guess. I feel that my work is art and aren't we all just trying to convince the rest of the world to take us seriously?

Great tee man, i've found threadless seem to pick some quirky tees rather than great art. Personally, i'd prefer to wear a cool looking tee with some great artwork on it like this one. Submit this, its excellent and i'd buy it. Please drop me a critique if you get a chance folks. http://threadless.com/critique/362381/Adoption_the_new_black

Really fantastic. I really like the contrasting textures in the clouds with the water. It's not they type of thing that I would buy for myself but if I saw it on someone else I would totally think it's cool , submit

Solid, very clean style, love it! The sulking skeleton watching the world go down the drain is both clear and profound. You could even push that aspect further by placing the skeleton in the same pose as Rodin's The Thinker. The pose is almost there as it is that it wouldn't take much to evoke that famous work more, just adjust the arm positions some. The clouds and half tone adds a bit of depth which is nice. The only thing that really stands out to me are the elliptical pools of water below the skeleton. It is not clear what they are or what purpose they serve. I think it might be stronger without them, just have the water from the earth slowly dripping, falling, or spiraling down to the drain. Overall great job!

This looks so awesome, I really enjoy the way the water is dripping and the distressed styled clouds!!

The design looks great, love the clean style and your choice of colour. However your older version also looked great, so i am not sure if the skeleton will appeal to a majority of the threadless community. I might be very wrong, but i see no other reason why your last design didnt score higher. Well good luck, il vote 5$ once its up. If this dosnt work i would head a different direction, you clearly have both the skill and the talent to create a winner. good luck.

I feel that the small green part in the globe is killing your monotone feel, seems like it doesn't fit well and it's drawing unnecessary attention. Plus, reducing colors is always a good thing.

I also think this is too big for printing, specially since it's going all the way to the shoulder/sleeve.
olbeardy
olbeardy on Jul 14 '08
Threadless has access to a belt printer which can handle crossing seams onto sleeves etc. with ease. This should not be a challenge.

I agree with the whole thing about it not being "Threadlessy"--that's not to say it isn't good, but it may do better on other sites. If Threadless doesn't go for it, try Design By Humans.

Buuut I think Threadless peeps would go for this a lot more if you dropped the skeleton and the halftone--that earth/water thing is neat. That may kill the whole concept of the design, though :/
aboutandy
aboutandy on Jul 14 '08
Threadless does come with a pretense it seems. They are kinda indi in my opinion. So if this design doesn't fly the way it is I wouldn't give up with it. There are other sites. And I guess you could conform. But I think that with the way the skeleton is done and how it looks, the design should pass submission.

i'm not digging the half-tone background.. doesn't seem to fit with the solidity of the rest of the design.
