why do you have to make it portrait? why not a wrap around?
the wrap around would lose the continuity of the image, I imagine, and wrapping both sides would be a tough print job. Not to mention that my least favorite part would be front and center.
Doesn't mean I wont try it, or even offer the option in the final version, I just don't see it working as of yet. Thanks for the suggestion. |
martiandrivein on Jun 16 '08
yeah, no prob. Also, any part of it could be front and center. it's all in how you place it (look at priscilla's "MY TURN") it can wrap starting at any point and go to any point on the back, it doesn't have to be symmetric.
yeah, thats true, I hadn't thought of that
The sketchy nature is cool, I'm not sold on the imagry just yet. It's not speaking to me. This may change with added tops to the environment...as you say you're gonna add.
when all is said and done, the imagery should have a much better visual connection and fluidty...it wasnt planned, so I didnt realize what I wanted to do until long after I had started. The environment will definitely have more toppage

hummm nice drawing skills, totally not my type but nice!!
Maybe you need a vertical element for the red part to (maybe flames...), but it might unbalanced the drawing. Maybe make a kind of transition between the different colors : left part of ice coloumn meltind. Left part of tree freezing... And i think the forearm is a bit out of proportion. To long if you compare with the length shoulder/elbow. I hope it'll be usefull |
I will definitely be using transitions in the final piece, it was on my mind, and since you said it I know its the right decision. Proportions are completely off, as it wasn't my concern in the doodle stage. Thanks.

Have you ever seen Mr. Brooks? The daughter in that movie wears a shirt with a dragon on it that wraps around the neck, and mostly just the tail and the head are visible in the front. If that's not a good explanation let me try again, but I think this would be cool that way.
If you don't want to try it let me know because now I want to do it... |
Haven't seen that movie, but thats an awesome way that I could wrap this around if I go that route
sparkmymind on Jun 17 '08
The ice wall needs to be thinner so you follow the head to the body better.
agreed. thanks.
red section needs flames, and blue section needs more snowflakes and crystals.

I like how the dragon/animal is progressing through the 3 worlds. However going from blue to red, it doesn't seem as organic as from green to blue. I think it is because of the hard line. Maybe make that wall more like boulder and try to not define the line so much. Maybe pieces of the rock are falling down, some rubble and some of that is the different colors too. Also, the connection of the arm and claw doesn't seem to match up scale-wise. it might even look nice to have it in front of the rock.
In extending the tree, ice, and rock upward and outward, you could make it so that it disappears into the shirt like some of the threadless shirts already printed that have that central design and it is like you are peeking through the trees. (i.e. one with the kid on the swing watching tv, one with the kids on the branches, and even stinger's fish one with the big eyes, like the shirt is the fish) something along those style. As far as the illustration/style I think it is spot-on. Keep developing those details like the cracks in the rocks, the snowflakes, ice reflections, drips, and leaves. Those will help sell this. The details are great. Love the scales, and how the creature transforms to the environment. |
Kresta on Jun 17 '08
I like it, but his veiny arm looks a little like a breast...
snaggle, you hit on many of the things that I will definitely be doing. Thanks for the very in depth feedback.

This is beautiful just the way it is. I say print.

Ste7en, This is a super Design, I love its schetchiness, and love the way the dragon is in all the worlds.
I also wanted to point you to this Thanks. |

luzge on Jun 17 '08
I like sketch style as well, too many too perfect lines in here already ;) I think it would work well on white tee..
campbell_graphics on Jun 17 '08
I can't see anything but a pregnant woman in the middle (blue) section
The number one problem I see, based on feedback, is that this doodle didnt convey that they are 3 different animals overlapping...the middle one is going to be a fat hairy snow yeti, the first being a dinosaur, and the last being a dragon...the t-rex and dragon are too similar so the first or last may change...maybe a different dino at the start...or a magma golem at the end
made some huge changes, lots of work to go...kept it landscape layout instead of portrait. Only the foreground is complete. Alternate RGB color option and t-shirt placement ideas will come after I finish.
Let me know your thoughts. |
goldensara on Jun 23 '08
the black scenery seems to be obscuring the dragon. why is he there? what is he doing? thats what i'm asking myself, and i'm trying to get a feel of the mood you're going for.
i hope that helps. I actually liked the first version better, because hes not so hidden and the contrast between the different colors is nice. |
its not 1 creature. its 3. a phoenix, a dinosaur and a yeti...and the colors will come, as mentioned in the post above
the yeti foot is awesome.
thanks
added the color version to clear up any confusion
insane detail! looking forward to seeing this finished.
i can't imagine a color scheme that will make this better than it is now, but i trust u'll do your thing... |
OMG! i pressed ''post comment'' and i got a color version!
this must be a magic PC! looks awesome man! now i'm gonna ask for ice cream! ''click post comment'' |

Chankalank on Jun 24 '08
very very cool. i would buy this design.
Silent-T on Jun 24 '08
I'm not quite seeing enough different between the dragon and what I assume is a dinosaur. They look far too similar, so having the yeti on the end just looks weird. I think it would be more effective if you changed the dinosaur to a herbivore instead - think brontosaurus?
I'm not sure that I like the shades of red, green and blue that you chose either, but they do definitely help make the idea more clear. Nice detail too. |
Art By Kate on Jun 24 '08
I enjoyed watching the process. I def like the most recent product in comparison to the first. Msot of the things I was going to write got fixed. So how the tree between red and green share both colors, Id like to see a bit of that in the vines between blue and green. Also, how the roof line is similar in red and green, maybe angle red differently? These are little things I noticed, but I still dig the design even with my OCD. Nice work =) -Kate

macmoritz on Jun 24 '08
hmmm the first version worked better with the colors... I don't like the r g b scheme... looks too agressive to me in some way! maybe just make one background and only color the flames, the snow and the leafs and so on. Would look better in my opinion!
Please don't forget to critique mine! |
Art By Kate: the roof lines will be more balanced. That problem stems from me asccidentally drawing the jungle where the yeti part is, and then having to flip it over to the middle when I realized. There will be a mix of blue and green on the tree as well.
Silent-T: the shades are subject to change at the very end. Once everything is cross hatched it will be easier to tell what does and doesn't work. The colors will be much more subtle with the heavy inking. |
Those primary colors takes away from the illustration.
brittanynicole on Jun 24 '08
Yeah, I agree with mezo on the colors...
The illustration you started with is really great, but then it loses something in the second and third versions. Maybe some variation in the lines? Thick/thin? Awesome idea, though! |
TreesMakeTheWorldGoRound on Jun 24 '08
Yeah i don't like the red green and blue.
I think it looked fine at V2 tbh as it had the detail and wasn't over run buy the visious colours. Great idea here. |
Yelle on Jun 24 '08
it's hard to believe that the Beast can stand like that, looks it could fall easily. Maybe you should keep the legs position of the first drawing, it makes more sense. Or maybe wings in the middle part...
By the way, I think you made a good choice putting the different worlds in this order, from warm to cold. |
LigerNull on Jun 24 '08
The phoenix head isn't bird-like enough. It reads like a dragon with a beak. And for some reason, I liked the yeti in the center better. The primary color palette detracts from the detail in the drawing.
This design has a lot of potential. Keep working on it! |
made some changes to the phoenix head, shaded the characters and tried some desaturated colors.
Something that is nagging at me is that to some people, I can't seem to convey (through the art) that these are 3 different creatures in 3 different areas/climates, that overlap to look like one creature, but aren't. I think it might be more apparent now, but let me know. Thanks again for the extensive feedback so far. |
martiandrivein on Jun 24 '08
mmmm. the desaturation takes away a bit. I'd find a middle ground?
It works better on brown, which I will upload when i finish the background, but on the black I think you're right...though I didn't like the other direction at all, so I wouldn't much like a middle ground between the two
JimmyRoyale on Jun 24 '08
This is by far the best version, I'd submit it.
feel free to crit mine http://www.threadless.com/critique/23562/choose_wisely |

Oh yes, definitely an improvement! I like the added detail. And the colors are much better.
thanks!
mike bautista on Jun 24 '08
the colors and the detail are cool.
it's not RGB anymore, but this new version is way better. how will this look on a shirt? |
as soon as I finish the background I will post some tee placement options. The new title is not Rawr Grrr Burr, so RGB really doesn't matter too much, and the colors are still in that same spirit.
that middle option isn't quite possible, I messed up with placement, it should be a bit lower, but this is where I'm at....
awesome drawing

rad. how about a tail or some wings? unless you're too much of a pussy. i'd understand.

final version, with new red background art, and black and white alternate option. I'm going to submit this in a bit. Any last words?

ste7en ftw!
i can't believe how far this came from the original! |
Yelle on Jun 27 '08
it's weird, but I kind of like better the original !!!
But this one is great to ! Maybe not enough contrast between brown and the other colors for my taste. but black/white seems pretty good for that... |

thanks everybody!

WOW!!!!
Itīs awesome!!! :D |

Jeez, what an evolution.
I was going to reccommend showing a few more color variations (of the three tone color scheme) ... but I guess it's too late for that. Either way, you settled on a pretty slick design. The Graveful Dead |

Great drawing
i guess it might work better if you try to put it on the tee in a smaller size and i prefer on the black tee Also, i got a new version of Rubik Robots - Unsolved Vs Solved. Critiques are welcome :) |

I have a million things to improve (including making it portrait instead of landscape layout), but I figured since this is a rare occasion of having a rough sketch I would put this in critique every step of the way.
