I feel like this design needs a little more, but i'm not sure what. Text? If so, any suggestions for what it could say? Background elements? i was thinking they could be standing in front of the bar. What about placement? too big? should it be one of those smaller chest placement designs? How about color? I liked the Baby blue, but i'm up for suggestions. all comments appreciated. thanks all.

haha. this is great! Fantastic illustration, and it works well on the light blue.

It's beautiful! It needs a hook. Can't think of anything though :(
great illustration - would lend itself to a parlor with victorian patterned wallpaper and perhaps trophies on a mantle -
all in all it tells a story which is always a big positive |

wowwwww COOL ILLUSTRATION!!! wow itss great, hmm im think its missing something :S sorry but i dont know what, i really like it but yup something is missing .... [:

I love the illustration. Wow! I also love the concept and I would buy a shirt as-is.
What I don't see in the image is a victorious tortoise. Maybe incorporate a subtle ribbon, medallion, trophy, or laurel? |
Dawndarkharp on May 21 '08
This is a gorgeous illustration. I love this. It'd be neat if there was a faint indication of a fireplace/mantel behind them. Isn't that where dandy chaps smoked their finest?
This is amazing! I like the light blue for sure |

Very good drawing. maybe it lacks one more grey midtone to soften the shadows. were'nt there a lot of turtles in the original story? how bout adding some here? maybe smaller in the distance or faded in the background

These are great ideas everyone, thanks for all the feedback. I'll be sure to mess around with these concepts and put up a new version soon.

perhaps trophys in the background ontop a fire place? maybe..
the house of the tortoise |
dajogo on May 21 '08
I really like it. But the only thing I think is that the tortoise should be more victorious like 11of13 said. And maybe the hare should be toasting the tortoise.
Or maybe you could keep the victorian parlour look which is cool, and throw in some formula one style champagne spraying action. They were in a race after all!! pleasde crit me too: http://www.threadless.com/critique/20394/never_the_twain |

Ok, i updated this image with a fireplace and trophy. i even gave the tortoise a 1st place ribbon to go with his trophy. I feel like i'm good, but i was hoping to get some final thoughts before i submit. does it need text (catch phrase or something to to with it)? I made the background dark blue instead of black because the figured didn't stand out as well when it was black. any feedback is appreciated. thanks!

i like it =]
but i think it would be funny if the hare had a gun behind his back lol |

hroobarb on May 29 '08
I actually like this idea and i think that you've made a beautiful illustration, but the hard diagonal lines in the background bother me. Maybe you could have them cover a smaller area and/or have them distributed more evenly.
its pretty awesome. the lines in the back could be toned down, and im not really feeling the mantle. the shading in the middle of it looks a little strange. maybe simplify it and make it so it doesn't extend past the rabbits back. you probably have a winner here. looks great
also maybe move the trophy so it doesn't run into the tortoise's arm

very kool.. id like to know how u illustrated it.. on adobe or by hand or both..
agree with some of ndstillie's suggestions, but i love it! great idea and execution
I really like this style but watch out for the design that was already printed here at threadless : http://www.threadless.com/product/722/Enmity_Gardens
Great stuff though. |
thatoneguyjames on May 30 '08
Yeah, looking at the trophy, i had the layers wrong and its actually in front of the arm- mistake that i'll fix (i'll probably move it over a tad also). I see what you mean about the shading in the middle, i'll work on that a bit. I'll also work on toning down the background lines. thanks everyone for the comments.
also... jayrawz, i used a drawing tablet on photoshop. label, thanks for the heads up about the similar design. |

I love the fireplace mantle and I like how even the shading is in the background.

blo_in_the_dark on Jun 05 '08
i agree. the shading is cool. i think its called hatching and crosshatching, right? berry berry gud.
Stiffy42j on Jun 05 '08
go ahead and submit...looks good
twingliddy on Jun 05 '08
It is a great illustration, but I would leave the crosshatching in the background off. It is distracting me from the best part of the design.
If you keep it make it a different color to knock it back. It's fighting for the foreground. |
needycase on Jun 05 '08
I agree take out the background hatching. The floor is ok for stability. Nice hatching!!
CharlieArt on Jun 05 '08
maybe a little smaller

holy shit!
I love the tortoise's trousers. Tortoises are always depicted having short stubby legs. It's nice to see him sporting a proper pair of britches. 5 |
Malcolm Man on Jun 05 '08
Just a personal pref. I think it would be nicer if it were colored. I also think that it would be nice if the cross hatching in the BG were replaced with some old wallpaper or something.
Lastly, steam out of the cups? I don't know what their drinking, but steam would look cool. just mho. |

Love the British gentlemanly thing. Can't you drop the background? Please?
jshicks8 on Aug 16 '08
Either keep the background and keep it centered as is, or lose the background and place it in a lower front corner and make it slightly smaller.
