I think it has a lot of potential but I agree the characters could use a bit more work. In both characters the linework looks a little bit sloppy, you might have been going for that but it doesn't really look completely intentional to me so cleaning it up just a little bit would help the image out a lot.

The pig has a good expression for being confused, but the bird kind of lacks facial expression. Also the bird kind of looks like a penguin bluejay hybrid to me, so either work on the wings to make it less penguiny or change the coloring so it looks more penguiny depending on what you were going for.

On the pig I would maybe focus on the wings for now. Right now it kind of looks like he just has a few feathers coming out of his back, so I would work on making that more wing like. Keep in mind you could also use butterfly or bat wings maybe since no one can claim what pig wings are supposed to look like.

Another thing you could try might be using a flock of smaller birds instead of one giant bird. If you use a big one like you have now you will run into people that would want to see feather details or just more detail in general. If you use a bunch of small birds you can save yourself some hassle because you can keep them simpler. Just don't copy and past the same bird 10 times lol.

cheers Nerdimus, good feedback. It is a penguin, the idea being that a penguin and a pig are never gonna meet up flying. I did wonder about the blue colour, though in black it looks wrong somehow.

Changing the pigs wings is a good idea, I like the idea of butterfly type wings, that seems to emphasise the improbability of a pig flying.

And the penguins expression could do with some attention.

I agree that it's a cute idea, but the artwork does need work. On one hand I kinda like the blobbiness of your style, but on the other hand, I'm craving more detail, especially in the background. It's not immediatly apparent they're in the sky. At first I thought they were underwater.

Yeah I agree with the sky thing, was hoping the blue would make it clearer, maybe some clouds and or birds would help.

i want to add more texture/detail to characters but having trouble getting halftones in Gimp, anyone out there know who to do that?

this idea is great, but I don't know if the halftone helps the way it was used. it doesn't help the image, but if you use halftone in one animal, you should in the other. i'd keep the penguin's body solid with some gray highlights, like you did on the pig.

do you have illustrator? because i guess my first suggestion would be to clean up the line work a bit. it is most apparent where the line is thinnest, like under the pig snout.
you could also just draw this on paper and ink it in with lines of he same weight, and then scan it in at a high dpi/color in.

I dont like the half tone either but I think I'm all out of colours to use as a highlight. I kinds like the lines, like the fluid style. I dont have illustrator, only gimp and inkscape.

you can use the gray thats in the halftone.

You may be able to answer something actually. If i use a colour, can i change the opacity of the colour to give me a new colour? If you know what I mean.

i know that you can in photoshop, i have never used gimp or inkscape.

I would suggest to use a brighter pink for the pig

I think the cloud shape needs refining. make it a more confident shape. Less in's and out's and more fluid. Nice witty idea though.

i think you could get rid of the background , the two characters are pretty well connected and obviously flying and you might not need the dialog balloon their expression says it all.
