umm. hmm, Im thinking the bottle of worms needs to be tilted on its side with some worms wiggling out, and some left in the bottle. You will also probably need a drunk bird with a wine glass full or half full of worms to make this idea work. A singular bottle on a shirt just isnt all that interesting

I know he's not a duck, but the first thing that came to mind was "quack medicine". I love the idea - sort of an jungenstil poster advertisement along the lines of absinthe and the like. I agree its needs more - probably a character or something more towards the advertising/poster feel with borders and text. The early bird gets the worm; the late night bird gets trashed on them. :)

Great idea, Berrynoir! I am trying to figure out how I can keep the bottle as the main element, but add something to give it that extra zing. I think your idea may work. Anybody else?

great sketch, clever idea. I agree with Danielle and berrynoir that it needs more, just the bottle on the shirt looks like it's missing something. The worms coming out of the bottle would be a start, but some kind of character interaction would be good, maybe with a real bird around.

I totally agree, and I am working on that right now. Thanks!

Ever had one of those mornings? I took the comments from the first version. This is only a sketch! The final will be nice and clean, with lots of details. Quoth the raven...

i can easily image this as black bird, coral coloured wormies on purple t-shirt. with maybe some green tinge to the bottle ?
EricDiaz on May 06 '08
aahahaha, another great drawing! I'm looking forward to seeing this one in color too. I like this version better compared to the first. I liked DaniellesGarden's idea with the bottle on it's side with worms coming out, maybe that could be a background element. heh, like with a bird flat on it's back laying next to it with one of those 'hangover lines' above it's head. I think an Absinthe style might work well for the label. Looking good...
EricDiaz on May 06 '08
black and green indeed! Google absinthe for some dark inspiration.
yep that will work. you do need to have an empty bottle or something in the graphic i think.. since the bird is already wasted.
Amy Kollar Anderson on May 06 '08
I can have the bottle coming from behind on the left with a few worms coming out.
I did google absinthe and love the great labels. I have a few printed out for inspiration. Thanks! |
Amy Kollar Anderson on May 06 '08
Ok...added bottle. It is a little confusing without color, but does it seem to sit correctly? I like the comments about using darker colors like black, red and green. Anything else I should look at/think about before I start inking? Thanks!!!!

Great concept, very odd but makes total sense... I think. You must be the crow whisperer to be so intimate with their lifestyles :]
As far as the sketch, I'm not sure about the bottle on the floor, the base seems to be floating rather than lying down. Also, you might consider removing the cork and some worms from the standing bottle. I think it might better convey that he's been drinking from it. I really like the thought behind the bottle label (should be very popular among Poe and gothic literature fans). Maybe xxx or 96% proof would work better than a skull, since the skull is the universal symbol for poison. If I get the narrative right, he's a lush with a hangover rather than suicidal and dying. Lastly, I don't know what this has to do with anything but absinthe was originally made from worm root. Anyway, looks great and after seeing your other stuff, I'm really looking forward to the finished painting. |

Amy Kollar Anderson on May 06 '08
I have never seen that image by Picasso before. Very beautiful.
I was kinda wondering about the bottle seeming to float instead of being on the floor. I will play around with that angle some more. I definitely plan to elaborate on the label. Right now, I am still liking the bird skull, but it may turn into some filigree instead. |
NJz Kollectionz on May 06 '08
Definately like the direction this is going. Can't wait to
see final image. Very fun. |

whirlpeas on May 06 '08
Wow.. this is really interesting.. I like the worm idea, and the crow's face is so expressive.. The only things that I would change would maybe be to tighten the wing on the right side of the bird- unless he's meant to be looking like he has his wing on his hip?
Also, the bottle on the ground needs to be foreshortened more to give it more depth.. the back end of the bottle needs to be lower. You've done an amazing job portraying the overall anatomy of the bird though-- the feet and beak are esp. great details! I can't wait to see it as a line drawing! :) |
Amy Kollar Anderson on May 06 '08
I went with the foreshortening, but I can see the lip of the bottle still needs some tweaking. Man, I really stink with angles...I can do curves all day long, but ugh! Tightened up the wing. Thanks!

great use of 5 colors, Id go ahead and submit this.

I tried it on green and it just didn't seem to pop like I would like. I originally had it on burgundy, but the same problem.
NJz Kollectionz on May 12 '08
Wow, love the color job. I would consider tee color change, but I see you tried that. I agree too much red. Maybe on white or blue?
Lol! Very cool illustration. I think may on a dark grey shirt might work good too. Good luck man!
Amy Kollar Anderson on May 12 '08
I had it on the red shirt in version 5, but there were several comments about changing the shirt. Here are some of the possibilities mentioned. Right now, the eyes and label are the shirt color, but that is easily changed. Thanks!

i personally like maroon the yellow font stands out more. |
ginetteginette on May 12 '08
i like it on maroon most too,
love how bumpy you made those worms. |
I think it looks nice on the dark grey or that lighter green
Amy Kollar Anderson on May 12 '08
I could always add red to the palette for the wine label and eyes? I am also thinking the worms are too light.
antiismist on May 12 '08
Awesome, the only thing I can really say, is that I don't care for the bird having a white outline, I feel like makes the image feel inconsistent. I like the whites for the feathers on the inside of the bird, but the breaks in the outline take away for me at least. Otherwise, awesome use of color and a phenomenal design!
Nanos-1 on May 12 '08
Definitely go for the olive green. Maroon is nice, but overpowering for such a delicately detailed drawing.

Thanks for your comment on mine. I really like this... I think it's going in the right direction BUT - 1. There are inconsistencies in the style, I think what works very well here is the vintage look given by the black line drawing. keep it black and at the same detail level as the worms. Maybe redraw the bird in with black instead of using negative whites. 2. The glass highlights are'nt contributing or working. I say, either lose them and give up trying to portray the glass or look at a real bottle and use the black detail to give the feeling of glass and reflections. If you made the highlights completely white and lose the worms inside them it would work too. Personally, I dont think it's important to show the transperency of the glass in this design. It will look more vintage and styled. 3. I think the best color scheme is in the upper left version. The worm color works great with the label color and the bottle's green. The second green bottle behind is killing the color hierarchy though. cover it with your hand (DO IT!) and see how it instantly makes everything clearer and better. Tone down the green of that bottle or change it to something red-ish. good luck!
MikeRLea on May 13 '08
i like your level of detail, it's impressive that you've only got 5 colors there
Amy Kollar Anderson on May 13 '08
I think I also like the lighter olive green and used it to soften the background bottle. I darkened the pink of the worms and the green of the bottle. Took out most of the white outlines on the bird and messed with the reflections on the bottle. Thoughts? Thanks!
Ehud L on May 13 '08
Looks much better. the bird's body is still kind of made with a different language than the rest. I liked the red tag better on the pale worms
kaloman on May 13 '08
wow. this is great!
I love all the detail work! Submit! |
Holliday88 on May 13 '08
It looks good. I don't mind that the bird's body is different, it makes sense because it's a black bird. Personally, I preferred the green in V6, but this one is nice too. Did you ever consider making the worms liquid and putting just one at the bottom, like tequila? That might not be as interesting.. not sure. Good job.
Amy Kollar Anderson on May 13 '08
My main inspiration for this piece is the bottle filled with worms, so I don't think a single worm would have the same impact.
Brighter green better? |
Chiarandra on May 13 '08
Funny :)

Chiarandra on May 13 '08
I would use brighter colors, however. This colors make it look kind of sad, and it is supposed to be just the opposite, so.. ;)

pajamasquid on May 13 '08
Hmm. Hmm. The artwork is well done, certianly. I love the 'Never More' brand connected with the raven, but I don't know wbout the worm wine concept. I'm not sure how that works, or why the bottle would be so big compared to him (assuming that the wine was made specifically for birds...). I just have a hard time imagining the bird drinking it.
So, the artwork is great, but I just have trouble having it all come together for me. A sauced alcoholic raven and 'never more' are a good concept, but I think a different design could say it better. But if what you have is what you're going for, then I'd say submit because it's very well done. PS, please check out my critiques! |
EricDiaz on May 13 '08
I haven't checked up on this one in a while but it looks fantastic! You better watch out, you're going to get printed if you keep this up! The little bit of green in the bottle at the top is great reminds me of tequila with a worm in it, now it's worms with some alcohol, heh. I think the puddle under the worm should be green too though, or is it the bottle that's green and the liquid pink?
I'm clicking Submit but i would like to see it a little smaller on the shirt. Good luck on this one, i'll be giving you a 5 either way. |
Amy Kollar Anderson on May 13 '08
Thanks! I wondered if it was a little too big on the shirt. The bottle is green, not the liquid.
About the scale of the bottle to bird, since birds don't actually, as far as I know, drink wine, I thought playing around with scale would make it more interesting. Would it be better without the cork on the ground? I keep debating that too. |
EricDiaz on May 13 '08
I have no problem with the bird bottle scale, i actually like as is. These kinds of designs don't have to be picture perfect that's what makes them great. About the cork on the ground i could go either way on that.
Oh, one last thing maybe have the lines in the birds eyes red or pink. |
Amy Kollar Anderson on May 13 '08
I took out the cork. Better? I think so.
Love the idea of making the eye veins pink! And made the placement a little smaller. Any other thoughts? Thanks! |
