I'm not really feeling the caption. Should I lose it altogether, or try and get something better?

pretty awesome, but the light in the top right corner looks way out of perspective

i would get rid of those lines.
but i like this design overall |

Nelson L. Squeeko on Apr 11 '08
So just the lines by the busted bulb, or all of them?
Pathan Nagel on Apr 11 '08
the ones underneath the busted bulb as well as the ones underneath the other bulbs.
i dont think this design really needs the busted up bulb but its ultimately your call |
Nelson L. Squeeko on Apr 11 '08
I'm beginning to not like the busted bulb either. It fit a bit more when I had the caption, but now that I've dropped that it doesn't seem as helpful to the design. Thanks.
kyrnith on Apr 11 '08
haha xD This is good. I like it.
If you want to make it obvious that the other lightbulb was beaten by them, you could have a third light-cop in the background? Or you could just take it out. Either way. It's good, though. |
Annabanane on Apr 11 '08
You could throw the busted bulb on the back of the T, if you're looking for a more appropriate place for it.
Nelson L. Squeeko on Apr 11 '08
Oooh, the back. Never thought of that, I'll see how I like it.

It is fun but
You can think about the color. |
element_101 on Apr 11 '08
i really like it. looks best on blue shades. the red and army green ones don't look too hot...
Nelson L. Squeeko on Apr 11 '08
I was thinking the same things about the colours. The red and green don't really flow with it. My favourite is still the light blue (the main shirt that shows both front and back)
element_101 on Apr 12 '08
yeah. that and navy are the best.
Mr. Gomez on Apr 12 '08
I think your idea is really good, Though I'm not a fan of copy pasting. I think its alright to copy and paste the light bulbs but chnge a few things on each of them so they look different, like the lights and shadows, also the perspective on the lower part of the police lightbulbs is a bit off (I mean the white lines over the black).
You could improve the detail on the police stars to make the hats look a bit more interesting... Sorry if I'm really picky hehehe because I really am, but I think little details like the once I just mention and the ones other people mention are really important :) Keep up the good work! |
Nelson L. Squeeko on Apr 12 '08
No no, nit picky is good. Thanks for the tips.

omnig33k on Apr 12 '08
I agree with Mr.Gomez that there need to be some differences in the two police bulbs. Also, I would have a broken filament in the busted bulb. I just have this image of a 'bulb gone bad' and it would be burnt out first. Might just be me, though.
bobobob1230 on Apr 12 '08
have you seen the cd cover for era vulgaris? they have faces and its cool.
maybe the cops could have aviators and bushy 'stauches and maybe a cigarette? |
Nowhereland on Apr 12 '08
I agree with Gomez and Oming33k. I think the police hats should be at different angles. That would probably be enough to make them look like individuals. Great idea though.

chlobo107 on Apr 12 '08
Clever idea! I don't think the broken bulb on the back is needed though. Also, this could use some highlights that aren't white - maybe a light yellow.

JervV on Apr 13 '08
My only thoughts were about the collars (i think thats what they are) on the two lightbulb officers - its jus not clear what they are supposed to be. Maybe if they continued through the whole of the 'neck'?
Nelson L. Squeeko on Apr 13 '08
JervV, by collars, do you mean the darker grey line that goes along with the curve but stops almost at the end? Thats just a groove thats on the bulb I used for a reference. However, now that I look at it, I'll try making it go all the way across.
I'll try out the rest of the ideas here, like the yellow highlights, a busted filament (either in the broken bulb, or get rid of the broken bulb and give the bulb in custody has a burnt out filament cause he went "bad". And I really want to see what the cop bulbs look like with aviators.) |
aqua_bat on Apr 13 '08
dude the light in the middle should totally be a blacklight
that would be awesome, and send the message even more |
JervV on Apr 13 '08
No, I meant the little Blue tabs sticking up just below the grey lines. Also, good idea with the aviators...
forthesteel on Apr 13 '08
I know there is a color limit, but I dont think the color of the light bulbs trench coat should be the same blue as the cops hats. Try giving him a tan trench coat.
critique mine? I made changes. http://www.threadless.com/critique/18502/Do_Unto_Others |
Blake B on Apr 13 '08
blacklight = winner
Nelson L. Squeeko on Apr 13 '08
Oh, I see what your talking about now JervV. The blue tabs are actually nothing. Its just empty space in the lightbulb design.
As for the tan trench coat on the inefficient bulb, thats something I was trying, but couldn't get it to look right with the amount of free colours I had left. I'll give it another try and see what I can do. When you say use a blacklight for the incandescent bulb, is that as a reference to racial profiling, or drug use? |
Blake B on Apr 13 '08
i was thinking racial profiling like a rodney king type thing
just a thought. |
0r4ng3 on Apr 13 '08
maybe only one cop is needed? Or no trench coat?
I think if we had a better view of the normal light bulb, a fat pair of handcuffs would look great! Also, maybe a police badge shape instead of the star? great idea though! |
Blake B on Apr 13 '08
that is a police badge shape

Changed/Added a lot. Thanks for all the suggestions. |
marrgalo on Apr 14 '08
Are you still working on this? I think you should change out the dark light bulb for an ultraviolet one - it would probably be more threadless-acceptable and a bit lighter/comical! Can you also add some kind of a backdrop to the scene?
Nelson L. Squeeko on Apr 14 '08
Ya, I was too busy over the weekend to add anything. I can't really see what an Ultra Violet light looks like, I'm already at my colour limit. But I'll see what I can do. I'll also give a go at some sort of backdrop.
Nelson L. Squeeko on Apr 14 '08
-Update- I am able to drop a colour to see what the light looks like in different colours. UV-purple actually looks not too bad. It will be in the next update.

Mr. Raab on Apr 15 '08
I really like the idea, the art style is perfect, maybe make the other light just a little bit darker to help other people understand it more quickly. Also I think that the placement should be a little higher and more towards the center. One last thing, maybe a bit of back ground going on, not too much, just something to make the picture feel grounded and not just up in the air
0r4ng3 on Apr 15 '08
I miss the old abused bulb on the back!
I like the new version, you can notice all the detail much more now. Aviators were a great idea! |
Blake B on Apr 15 '08
im still feeling the blacklight idea
i too miss the broken bulb liked the cop changes though, still not sure if i like one cop or two cops better... |
Blake B on Apr 15 '08
may i also ask how you got it to look so smooth?
element_101 on Apr 15 '08
glasses make it all much better. i mean, who doesn't like huge shades?
Nelson L. Squeeko on Apr 16 '08
Do you mean how are the lines and detail so smooth, Blake B? Its because I'm using vector graphics (aka the pen tool) to create this design. Also has the benefit of being able to resize to and not lose quality.
I'd like it more with a less controversial title. The image itself looks more like an environmentally conscious message. The new taking the old to task for their crimes.
I'd appreciate a critique: http://www.threadless.com/critique/18824/multinational |

Le Dobermann on Apr 16 '08
when there was two cops i understood the idea behind this shirt, but now there is one cop and the idea is lost.
I saw version 4 first and didnt get what kind of discrimination is going on , so i had to check version 1 to get the idea :) Obviously something is wrong with version 4 :))) I would go for two cops. |

Nelson L. Squeeko on Apr 16 '08
I wasn't sure whether to keep the backdrop muted and just use an outline, or fill it out more with a solid colour. Thoughts?
-ZN- on Apr 16 '08
i think you should just add some color but not color the whole thing so that the lights still stand out
right now the car and the lights look like they have different styles like they shouldnt be in the same design |

Nelson L. Squeeko on Apr 17 '08
What really happens when incandescent light bulbs get phased out.
-------------------------------- I decided to get rid of the huge difference in colours between the two lightbulbs because it seemed people were assuming the message had something to do with police and racial profiling. The only reason now the one bulb is a little dark is because his filament is burnt out. |
Nelson L. Squeeko on Apr 17 '08
Also, which placement looks better? Front and centre, or bottom and wrap-around?
ZeeroKooL on Apr 17 '08
I think I like the bottom better. I saw your other ones and I never though it had anything to do with racial profiling. I think people look too hard for a meaning of a shirt.
PigBoatCaptain on Apr 17 '08
Agreed, Zeero. Also, and maybe it's too late for this, but it seems like the Incan and the Cop are too close together. It he cuffing him? Beating him? I see a handcuff, where's the other one?
Anyway, great design, love the bottom-left placement with the wrap-around (maybe a touch bigger, though), and great colors. |
Nelson L. Squeeko on Apr 17 '08
Thanks for your input ZeeroKooL and PigBoatCaptain.
I think I like the wrap around the most, but I was looking at it and also think it could be bigger. There's a hand cuff on each side of the Incan light. The one on the farther side is just not very visible due to the angle. The idea for the placement was that the cop bulb is walking with the Incan bulb while holding him (should, arms etc) to keep him restrained. I'll try moving the cop a bit to the left and see how it looks. |
