Many eyes see more than just mine! What kind of changes does it need?
eworks on Mar 13 '08
Sweet illustration! But I'm not digging the bg too much. It still looks really good. Rate mine http://www.threadless.com/critique/16769/Robots_Attack
yeah take out the background and sub it.
Sunshine69 on Mar 13 '08
I actually sorta like the background, but I'd like to see what it looks like without it. I think you should redo the exhaust clouds so they aren't all the same and have them coming from closer to the pipe
the background needs to be broken up a little more. Actually, varying the edges a lot more may help. It's too rectangle right now.
Thanks for your comments!!
Without the background the sloth doesn't look so fast. But I will try to brake up the bg and vary the exhaust clouds some more. |
monstaroc on Mar 14 '08
I'd recommend modifying the background into a pyramid shape that mimicks the shape of the illustration. I think the smoke clouds all being uniform in shape is fine but since you did such a good job rendering the rest the clouds would look better if they were rendered as well.

I wouldn't change anything - I like it as it is. Very cool!

vespagetaway on Mar 14 '08
i love sloths, and i ADORE this design. the concept is great too! yea, smaller solid smoke clouds closer to the pipe, they are kind of distracting atm. maybe have the lines near the top forming a rough skyline with trees (where the sloth is usually lounging) for some more theme contrast? gj tho, definite sub
oh this is fucking great!!! id sayvary the lines length as fatpigeon suggested, but not to make a shape, just somewhat randomly, proably a little texture on the wheels to match the rest of the design and also on the smoke, just minor changes, oh and please show it to us on a model so we can see how it looks once it gets printed
Thank you again for all the good ideas! I'm still playing around with the background. I tried the pyramid (thanks monstaroc) and different other shapes. And I started to draw a more realistic background with a jungle feeling to it. Lets see how that will work out. I will show you the results.
Still some things to fix. I have to clean up that background and draw new exhaust fumes. But what do you think?
Awesome.
nice style, i'd like to see his foot actually on the footpeg though. at the moment his toes are just curled against the brake.
i kinda liked the line effect for the background, and the colors from lat version, i just think the detailed backgound distracts somehow from that awesome sloth, though i might be wrong
you can't be wrong about your opinion, againstbound, it's just what you prefer! =)
I personally prefer this background though. |
i like this background better too, but i do see a loss in speed without those lines..
I noticed the foot not being on the pedal too, |
Spam69 on Mar 15 '08
Love it - made me and my co-worker smile
I prefer this background too! It also might be cool if you could make it look like he's cruising though?
I guess what I mean is adding some kind of streching in the background like a motion blur.
monstaroc on Mar 16 '08
I think the first background was working better for your speed dynamic. Also, while the jungle silhouette is well executed I don't know that it really fits the concept of the illustration. If the background is going to be that static I would recommend emphasizing the speed in the drawing. Have smoke coming from the tires and maybe pull more of the sloths hair backwards to show the wind effect.
Thanks for all the good ideas! I think I will stick with that background. I just like him cruising thru the jungle. But I'm cleaning it up. Less detail might be less distracting. The colors are Pantone. I know that I have to bring back some speed dynamic. He probably won't look as fast as in the first version but still will be a very fast Sloth (almost everything is faster then the usual sloth!). I will try the ideas with the flapping hair, lines and some motion blur. As for the footpeg - there is an extra footpeg and his toe is resting on it. But the toe on the footpeg shouldn't be confusing so I'm going to fix that too. Okay, lots to do and back to work!
Back again! I fixed up the foot on the footpeg and gave him back some speed. Working on the rest. More good ideas for the improvement of this design?
awesome

love it
Thanks!
yeah looks good.. I thought you were going to change up the exhaust fumes? they dont bother me as is though
you made that background work with speed, i think the only issue left is the smoke clouds and then youre ready to sub
oh and by the way, for a 98 yearold guy youve got pretty fresh ideas... and the balls to call yourself a kid |
squirrel67 on Mar 16 '08
That's a great design - future 5.
Yes, I'm going to change the exhaust fumes. Didn't get to it yet. Won't be the last version. More to come. :)

Excellent colors and concept. I can see where you could do some tweaking but it looks like you have the bases covered!
Sunshine69 on Mar 19 '08
more speed! Maybe some of his hair could be blowing in the wind.
Thanks magic thread and Sunshine69! I'm still tweaking all the little details of the background and I'm thinking about adding a little scared bird in the right top corner. If it doesn't take away from the sloth. I will post the update... soon.
I really like this. I'm glad you ran this through the critique forum. Version three looks far better than the original.

submit. nice work
i love the progeression of this. maby some speedlines mixed in with the background to make a fake motion blure that still wont take away from the awsoem detail. i would also lower the placement of the bike or rais the background
Lock42 on Mar 21 '08
Very cool, but I think the smoke is a bit off-style to the rest of the illustration.
I love the background as it really juxtaposes against the bike. |
Thanks a lot for all your comments and all your good ideas. I haven't finished tweaking that background. But I've changed the exhaust fumes and that is how The Sloth looks right now.
I know I'm probably in the minority, but I actually like it more without the speed lines. . . It's framed better when it's just in a neat oval, like he's revving up his engine to go. But that's just my opinion.
scottyp357 on Mar 22 '08
Very cool. The exhaust looks much better this way.
well maybe the speed lines dont need to extend beyond the background area,
this looks great, btw.. what do you plan on doing to the background? |
artulo on Mar 22 '08
this looks great - can't wait to see the final version that you're happy with!
Background? I'm tweaking every leave, branch and root. There are a lot of lines and shapes that got messed up when I rendered my drawing into a vector graphic. You probably won't notice the changes I make in these small previews. But I want it to look nice and clean! Thanks.

I like it, but I think you should remove the speedlines or make them a litte more faded.
If you have got time, please comment my design http://www.threadless.com/critique/17349/A_story_about_rain thanks a lot! |
looks great
I love everything about this so far apart from the way that the bike looks as if it's floating. I think it could do with some shadow or texture beneath the wheels to make it feel more 'grounded'. Just my opinion.

Okay - that's it! I think it is done! Which version should I submit? V5 (with the light green speedlines) or V6 (without speedlines)? Speedlines or No speedlines - that's the question! Thanks everyone!!! You all have been a great help!
i say without
Without speed lines (V6)! I love motorcycles, bout time we had a print of one! Good luck

MediaMisfit on Mar 26 '08
I dig it. I like it without the speed lines because his hair is communicating the speed. The speed lines might take away from the background. Good design!
MediaMisfit on Mar 26 '08
Actually the lines in v5 aren't that bad compared to the ones in v4. Speed lines are cool.
lucia_liquorice on Mar 26 '08
i say with speedlines.
now it's 5:4 without:with...just to make it harder to decide:))) both are great. this made me smile. i once saw a sloth on a tree. it took about 10 minutes just to move it's head around, look at me and move back. |
Thanks lucia for the story (you like liquorice? I am an addict myself!)! And thanks for the comments. The score is 5:5 and probably my decision. Personally I like the speedlines too. But without the speedlines I am able to reduce the colors down to seven. I think about it... and submit.

i really like it, you could try using some sort of baroque patterny feel to the background. the sloth works well as a character too with satisfied emotion.

This is adorable, and I like it much better without the speedlines.

without speedlines :) great job!

V5 ftw, looks great!!

I can't believe this will be your first design, wow!
Done! I've submitted The Sloth. With speedlines! When it is up for scoring I'm going to post a link to a version with no speedlines and 7 colors. Thanks so far and see you there!

hey cotton kid,
congrats for your first submission and good luck for the scoring (i'll be there :)! as you live in berlin (where i have been living as well), you probably know the kado shop for liquorice junks like you and me. if not, here's the link: http://www.kado.de |

glenn E on Mar 29 '08
I like it without the speedlines. i like the vintage style bike and sloths are cool.
Bio-bot 9000 on Mar 29 '08
i'd say without speed lines. right now it loks like the sloth is just idling, leering at you, just ready to explode out of the jungle like a bat out of hell. if he were actually going fast (as speed lines would suggst), i'd want to see more dust and motion from the wheels.
so, i vote for either no speed lines as is, or speed lines + wheel dust/tire tracks. |
7 colors on Army Green and without speedlines!
curtispaulelliott on Mar 29 '08
i think the colors were better in v6. i think you should go back a step and submit.

I like this version but with the colors of v 6. The idea and execution is spot on!
Imput needed! I got only two days before deadline! |
Even though the colors in v6 might look better this version is closer to a real print. The number of colors to choose from is limited, I had to choose between Army Green, Kelly Green or Olive Green (Threadless T-shirt colors) and Pantone. I picked Army Green and subbed.

hey c kid,
thanks for the link :) i like the idea of doing a black shirt together. let me know when you have the time! i'm waiting for the sloth to score... |
