hmmm. i really like how you used the gray in the black to make it semi transparent. but i'm not sure how transparent oil is. Maybe make the ship a little bigger inside, maybe almost like it's about to break through the glass. Also think about a shadow of the boat under the oil. otherwise, it's great! =]
EricDiaz on Feb 26 '08
i like it, but it needs some more detail before submitting... try some shading around the bottom and maybe a subtle background graphic.. or like add another ship at the bottom of the jar on its side.. just to make it a little more exciting, keep it goin

something about being able to see the bottom ring of the jar through the oil but not the bottom of the boat bothers me. Either you need to show the rest of the boat under the oil (which I'd prefer) or you need to remove the back half of the bottom of the jar ring.
Also it would be nice if the boat was a little bigger. A label of some sorts on the side of the jar would add some interest. Perhaps some other elements in the oil like fish skeletons?
wiredsc on Feb 26 '08
I agree about the shadow and the size of the boat, but other than that, I'm really liking it.
You've got the illustration skills I want, keep it up. http://www.threadless.com/critique/15958/Bird_Life |

bortwein pretty much said it all, maybe some more detail on the bottle's cap? and maybe using the red tones you're using on the boat
great job man, glad to see you're subbing again, i was too late and arctic spa sold out on me =(, guess i'm gonna have to be quicker for your next print, cheers |
zenproducts on Feb 26 '08
i would submit it.......i like it...only one thing: the bottom you should not see it. then the problem with the boat is solved
good suggestions, i'll try to experiment a bit....
Fauniie on Feb 27 '08
Great idea mate, and the style you've done it in lends it self to the concept. The Jar definitely need a bit more personality, a Symbol on a the cap maybe and a label but to the side so you don't obstruct the design or maybe a thing one facing us.
If you get the chance, Please comment on my design: http://www.threadless.com/critique/12106/Balloon_Golf |

I would add more detail/shading to the cap. According to the ship and oil, the cap doesn't fit to the rest of the drawwing. for the rest : well drawn, I would submit it when improved!

Very funy!
I think it could indeed do with xtra work on the shades and a label. Don't no about other stuff in the oil, but might be worth experimenting with! |

added a label (not sure what to put on it yet (space is limited)) and fixed some colors.
i also want to add some embossed logo or something on the lid.... |
Looking really good. I love how you got the label to work with the back part of it being the shirt color. Nicely done. The only thing that slightly bugs me is that on the shirt the jar might feel like it is floating there without a shadow, but I could over look that pretty quickly. Do you have any other plans for updates?
thanx bortwein, have to think about the placement, and a shadow might help a lot.
i'll try some in the next version. |

added the shadow, and placement..
might also be nice at the bottom of the tshirt? maybe some oil spills on the floor as well could do the trick... |
i think an unconventional placement would suit this one better, have yout tried bottom left or right?
oh yeah, stains on the shirt would be nice =)
ah yeah, that could be fun :-)

V4ND4L on Feb 29 '08
i haven't looked at this since v1, but i really like what you did with the bottom of the jar. it makes the oil look much thicker, and i especially like the reflection of the ship on the surface of the oil. nice work! but i do agree about the placement, and i think it would look better somewhere other than the center of the chest.
and since it already looks like there is oil running down the side of the jar, some spills on the table/counter/whatever the jar is on would look sharp. |
wow, great shadow. Well done.
loganwagner on Feb 29 '08
Awesome, I would play with the placement, but otherwise would leave as is. Stains might work, but don't mess with it too much or you'll loose the simplicity that is so great in your design. Whenever you submit I'll be sure to leave a very high score...
Check my stuff out if you have a chance, I would love some feedback from you. |
howdyrockerbaby on Feb 29 '08
I love the concept. I think it's almost perfect except that the perspective of the bottom of the jar doesn't match the perspective of everywhere else. Were that a real jar, it wouldn't be able to stand up. It would weeble-wobble and most certainly fall down.

Fauniie on Mar 01 '08
I love how this thing as come out!
In terms of placing you could take the jar in the upper left thats sorta tipping and put it over the heart/chest area pretty small and have the stationary one on the back sorta in the center and pretty big. http://www.threadless.com/critique/12106/Balloon_Golf |
you mean, multiple jars on one shirt?
elspers on Mar 01 '08
this is nice, I like your placement on the lighter grey shirt. And if you were going to place the tipping jar on the shirt somewhere as well, I'd go with a small version on the sleeve or on the back of the shirt, top and centre.
Fauniie on Mar 01 '08
I was thinking one on the front and one on the back :D
then it might be nice to change the ship as well.
that you see the rear-end of the ship on the back or something? i'll experiment a bit in the next versions... |
indiesigner on Mar 01 '08
This turned out very nice, the spill along the jar was a nice touch. If I had to pick between the two jars, I would choose the top left, however.
or an clean empty jar small on the front on the right chest,
and a big one, filled (tilted maybe) on the back.... |
i just got an idea that might help, but might also be a bitch, what about a second jar, with clean, crisp water, and some seals, fish, etc swimming in it? emphazing some kind of contrast between the oil filled one giving way to death and the clean one full of life, i know you've got the skills to pull it off though iknow not if you like the idea at all, anyways hope i was of any help, keep it up!

what about a second jar, with clean, crisp water, and some seals, fish, etc swimming in it?
well, the clean jar could be the one on the front, and then the filthy dark one on the back... i like the contrast. there might be still a penguin that's not frozen in the arctic spa i could use... haha |
something went wrong in the previous post..
first suggestion line is from [againstbound] |
I like the back as the design. I don't think your presentation of the design does anything to benefit the design at all, I think it takes away from it a lot. Show it BIG and let the design shine like it truly does. I like the leaning, leaking jar, with the shadow.
I also think the shadow is a little bit too big, but that is a minor detail.
Nice idea, very cool illo.
However, I think it's going to be very difficult to find a size and placement that going to look good on the shirt because the illo is so self contained. I think bortwein's suggestion to make it "BIG" is probably your best bet to avoid a floating or spacey composition. I don't think the back adds anything. The concept, narrative and drama are really wrapped up nicely in the one cracked jar. So, to me, the back is a throwaway chapter, it just adds length to the story but nothing more to the plot. Unless of course, you go with ab's idea which does add to the content. (As an aside, I'd really like to get the statistics on how many back/front tees threadless has done over the years. Maybe 10% at most? It's got to cost them a lot more to produce them, no? I haven't see any in the current catalogue, has anyone else?) Anyway, another angle might be to have it bobbing on the crystal clear, blue waters of the Caribbean, so you can see both the top and bottom of the jar. You might put a crack in it rather than a leak, threatening or foreshadowing the next Valdez disaster. It might add a bit more to the antipollution message as well. It certainly would give you a lot more options for the composition on a shirt. Anyway, thats my 2¢. Again, great concept, exceptional rendering. Cheers! |
great suggestions.... thanx!
placement is indeed diffilcult. but i also think if placed BIG, or placed in a setting, it'll work out.. we'll see in the next versions... |
any other suggestions?

tried a new angle:
the jar is now floating in a clear blue sea, a disaster waiting to happen... what do you think? |
oh fuck yeah!!! this looks great man, not diggin the gray shirt though, maybe instead of showing 2 color options show 2 placement options, upper and lower, this really works perfectly on blue i dont think color would be an issue here
i also think that using the boat's red either on the jars cap (lid? dont remeber the name) or the label would look good, but either way it's a subber, nice job |
greenmeansgo on Mar 11 '08
i agree i like the blue shirt a lot better! and i think the design should go lower on the shirt :) awesome though! i like it!
mind checking out mine? http://www.threadless.com/critique/16648/iPatch |
ok, good point to to use only the blue tee ....
I think blue jean and light blue would probably work as well. Actually, given the color of the blue at the top of the jar, the jean might work better, not sure though. I agree with lower on the shirt, it's a bit top heavy. ab has a point about adding another hint of red , maybe the outline on the label?
I don't know about this, but it might be worth a try. Maybe with the jean or light blue shirt you could print a darker blue band across the bottom, this way you'd have ocean and sky. Nothing elaborate, (the jar and ship are intricate enough), just a graphic band of color and the simple swirls you have now to indicate water. Just a thought. Anyway, looking really good and looking forward to scoring. Cheers! |
wow, love the new layout on the dark blue shirt.

added some shine to get the glass better...
placement: off-center, and a bit smaller than v9 |

my only suggestion would be to move the design up on the shirt just a bit more, but the design itself is perfect.

alecbersch on Mar 21 '08
this is great. as it stands, i think you could submit this and be accepted.
Iels on Mar 22 '08
nice, but agree with bortwein; try moving it up a bit
when i move it up even more, won't it be a bit weird for women-shirts?
right now the placement would put it right under a boob. I'd think on it would be better than under it, but I don't have boobs.
haha, me neither.
but i agree (after testing) that it should go a bit higher, and off center to the left.. |
lucia_liquorice on Mar 22 '08
except for the placement:
perfectly done. |
pistolshotxx on Mar 22 '08
I think it needs to be centered on the shirt more. or down near the bottom. either would be good

I agree with pistolshotxx.
I think centered would be the way to go, but bottom right would be tight too. |
