I kinda like.
I'd like it better if there were more of a dynamic range to the lines. Some thicker, some thinner. More bold lines. (Though I'm not familiar by the "inspired by" piece; would that make it less like the piece in question?) Also I don't think it's good on white, because there's no other color so it comes out too stark. Very few things look good on white, and usually to make white work you have to have something else going on. Try a few other colors of tee and see how they look to you. |
|
Gigguli on Jan 10 '08
The Future Is Feeling is a Select shirt here on Threadless. I'll beef up the lines for the next version.
I definetly got some color combinations up in my sleeve to try out! I kept to the very basics for this first version so you'd focus on the concept rather than the colors. How 'bout some golden grillz then? :) |

Well I went really back to the original piece in this one. First I thought autovectorizing it would leave a absolutely horrible effect on it but I was wrong. I drew this on a post-it with a pretty dull pencil a while ago but got working on it just now. What do you think? are the boys now a bit too fuzzy? (You can compare to the earlier versions)
|
|
Gigguli on Jan 11 '08
Some pointers would actually be nice!

Interesting, distinctive style. Captivating visual.
At first sight, given the frenzied composition and multiple facial expressions, I thought of dissonance or mayhem. Conversations going in all directions, a rowdy assemblage. The jagged linear style supports and conveys this notion. In V1 on the other hand, the lines are fluid and of equal weight, and except for the guy snarling in the lower left hand corner, the feeling is harmony and connectedness. Guys getting along as opposed to guys posturing, and competing. The subtle and elegant silver foil, lends itself to the more harmonious lines. I think a different approach would be necessary for the rougher rendering. I'd say guys are naturally competitive and would go with the rougher lines, but you need to decide what feelings/emotions you want the graphic to convey. As far as the drawing is concerned, there is one totally incongruous line in the 3rd person from the left in the top row. The vertical stroke cutting through the horizontal lines is coming from out of nowhere. I suggest you lose it or add more like it for the sake of the rhythm and beat of the composition. Lastly, the 3 similar, passive faces (one line for each mouth) at the bottom sap the energy out of the piece. You started me out thinking, a mixture of personalities and opinions and the 3 look-a-likes counter that experience. Wordy, I know. Anyway, I'm not suggesting any major changes here, just subtle fixes. I like the concept and your graphic approach a lot, and look forward to your next V. |

Thank you so much for the feedback. I started to really lose hope! It ain't really easy to get noticed as a novice designer, even in the Critique-section (which I really appriciate alot :)
I'll definetly work on the piece as suggested and think about the message I want to send with this design. Again thank you for the time that nobody else seems to find! |

There are plenty of good constructive critics here. Unfortunately, there are so many designs and there's the time factor. Just keep working, that's the only thing.

I went back to the hand drawn version (as in V1 and V2) but gave the stroke even more muscle. Gave pretty much everybody a bit facial and gave two more gents talking mouths.
I still want to remind you all that I'm propably not gonna sub this as b&w and I have left the colors away from the versions so you would'nt focus on that. |
|
Evilmoose on Jan 12 '08
interesting idea, and very good abstract piece but I personally prefer the finer lines you had at the start, it made the piece look calmer and more refined. The version you did in the silver foil style suited the picture best, I really liked how that looked.

also what kissme said, it is reminiscent of hairwolves...but different in its own right |

Nice idea and not a bad design overall. The purple or silver foil definitely looked pretty sweet.
|
|
Gigguli on Jan 12 '08
Hehe, actually I have a Hairwolves shirt and I think it's absolutely great! Never actually tought of the resemblance to the design before this. Please be so kind and look at the other versions of the the design while you are here.
As for the "let's see it on a shirt!" part, there is an example in V1. |
|
Gigguli, Post a smaller picture so we can see the whole picture with a bit of a frame. I like the changes in the expressions, more variety and energy. Judging from the comments, I think the fine line with facial changes may be the way to go. I've get the feeling that the fine line is more appreciated, because of its refinement and elegance, less sketchy more finished. So, I've probably misguided you when I critiqued V3.
Actually, now that I look at the facial changes, I think it might end up better in the fine line because it so contrasts with the rowdiness and mayhem depicted in the drawing. You might want to revisit the foil to push the contrast even more. Speaking of the foil, how in the world did you achieve that effect in V2? |
|
I personnally like the one in V1 the most, in black on white with clean lines. And I like how it looks on the shirt too.
|
|
Gigguli on Jan 12 '08
Thank you again for all the comments and suggestions. For this version I actually borrowed the big guys mouth from the vertical guy in the middle and the "heavymetal-twins" mouth is from the guy "northwest" The other twin I just left with a upset look on his face to make atleast someone not intrested in shouthing at each other. (I should really give numbers to the fellows for the next version :D)
I'm starting to feel pretty comfturable with the basics of the piece. Right after I subbed this version I made very minor changes in the placement of a couple of guys noses. Most annoyed I am with the "southeast" guys nose wich looks like an eye :( The next version will go nearest V1. I do want to keep the "hand drawn" feeling in the piece so I will not go to all simple lines. My friend suggested that i would color the guys and not just leave it one-colored. Right now I'm working with a Gold Foil coloring as i hinted in V1 ;) quister, The silver foil effect is a simple copper gardient that is found in the default Photoshop gardients. Just turned saturation to 0 and voilą! And yes, I will give it some space in the next version as suggested. |

Bio-bot 9000, Beatles you say? :D I actually tought here on the day that it could go for the Discogs Loves Threadless but the dear gents seemes more like to have an lively debate rather than singing or whatever.
I pretty much hate the title that I gave this one when I put it up for Critique. If you have anything convenient, please don't hold it in! I'm open to all suggestions for the name of this piece. :) |

Gigguli on Jan 12 '08
... And if we want to go to the psychedelic Beatles stuff, maybe some hippish flowering all over and more random stuff floathing around?

Gigguli on Jan 12 '08
Bump! before a good nights sleep! I had'nt realized that you could use gardients in Threadless, wich was one of the first toughts, when I started working on this piece. I'll see if I can come up with something awesome. Maybe, maybe not.
Well happy feedbacking and good night! |

Man this thing is rocking. I don't think you need random stuff. I'm liking the gold foil a lot. Never seen anything like it. Black and white and gold as the kicker, very cool. No Discogs, these guys aren't singing, there sounding off. As far as titles; "Jawing", "Intercourse", (according to Webster's, it actually means communication between individuals), "The Belfry", "Psych Ward", and "iitlyto". Let yoy know if I think of anything else.

i like this. i'm more for the colors on the right, tho. i feel like the one on the left is difficult to see some of the details. but still great job :)

Thanks guys for the amazing feedback! Allready seven green lights are'nt so bad! :) Personally I think the gold an silver is kind an easy way out and when I think about it the Gold Foil version is a bit too overwhelming.
The first name I tought after "Guys Hanging Around" was "Round Hanging Guys" which is pretty self-explanatory. After quister your feedback in V3 I got really into thinking about the message os this piece. "Debate" or something with debate in it is my current choise. From V4 I allways saw the big guy as the debate moderator and the orther guys really letting their opinions loose. I will not quite submit this because I want to find the perfect placement for this first. Some of you think: "What? You have it in V1 allready!" but let me explain. In the really original piece the image was allmost an square (and it had one more guy in southwest, who was a bit to random there, so I erased him). In the placement in V1 I think the southwest corner is a bit too open. I'm going to strech it so the form becomes just a little bit triangular. The placement could also work as an normal-size print in the middle as in Heavy Metal Listening Party I hope I see you again in the next version! |
|
You know what you want. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

(I reworked slightly the teeth on the guy down southwest and there is a little misscoloring, oops!) Besides that it would be printed on Cream.
I also tried a more traditional placement. Which do you prefer? I'm also still open for any name suggestions! :) |

|
Gigguli on Jan 14 '08
iDanSimpson, the lines have been worked on differently in each version. This version has the same thickness as V2 and V5. I don't really understand what you mean with "cleaned up". Are you saying that they should'nt have the "hand drawn" feeling in them?
As for the gradation. It's not a gardient but Bronze and Gold Foil. I get the feeling that you have'nt read my comments? |

The gradation is definitely not needed, as already said.
|
|
Gigguli, It's not gradation but it looks like gradation and anyone who doesn't read every comment is going to believe it's gradation. I think you ought to flatten it out in one drawing and show the foil effect, (put a label on it), next to it for clarity. The foil lighting also darkens the teeth on the faces at the edges of the drawing which interferes with the rhythm of the dark/light, dark/light pulse that works so well in the line drawing. The work is good the presentation needs work.
|

Gigguli on Jan 14 '08
Yea, I allmost went mad with the lack of comment quality. I'm gonna straighten it out right now for the next version.

nikolina100 on Jan 14 '08
ooooo, I dig this!! I love the idea of the bronze foil hair....not really sure about the gold teeth, but that could be just me. I gotta say the grey version with the silver foil looks pretty rad, I just think it needs a few dark areas to make the image (like the mouths and hair lines) to make the contrast higher. cool design :)
|
|
iDanSimpson on Jan 14 '08
This version has the same thickness as V2 and V5. I don't really understand what you mean with "cleaned up".
i was just stating that the thickness wasn't very unified in the versions in which i could see the line work up close. but, cool! it looks like you were a step ahead of me. :) best of luck |

Gigguli on Jan 14 '08
Thank you! I'm thinking about trying the Silver Foil version on a darker tee. I'm thinking Dark Grey, Purple, Navy or Royal Blue. Some people worry about that the details won't show enough, but that problem would be pretty much solved then.
Now it's turning into night here in Finland and I'm gonna go to bed. Happy feedbacking once again to you, all fellow t-shirt-enthusiasts! :) |

This is the version that I'm gonna go with. A few bumps is only in order because I colored it really fast :D
|
|
I think the positive print works differently than the negative print.
In all the neg prints, the mouth's brightness dominates and really becomes the central focus while the faces and hair settle for a supporting role, subordinate to the mouths. If that's what you want, more attention on the jawing, focusing on the source of disparate opinions, than it's working for me in that way but not without losing some of the interactivity seen in V1. Any of the pos prints also focus on the mouths but to a lesser extent which gives the faces and hair a bigger part or role in the story. As a result, the rhythm of the piece, (line on color/line on white/dark shapes/white shapes) is more vibrant/energetic. And to me that's the essence of the idea, interactivity, conversations going in all directions, a rowdy assemblage. Anyway, I'll go back to a previous post to restate my preference; "Man this thing is rocking. I'm liking the gold foil a lot. Never seen anything like it. Black and white and gold as the kicker, very cool." So, for me, it's the gold on white you put up in V7. Hope this helps. |
|
Gigguli on Jan 18 '08
After fast but careful thinking, I think I'm really gonna go with Gold Foil as recommended. Even if there was some likings with the Silver Foil in previous versions V8 never got a single Submit this.
The placement on the other hand I'm going to keep from this version. Thank you everybody who helped me in the process. Specially you quister! |

jpeacockdesign on Jan 18 '08
gold is a good compromise i liked bronze hair too but the silver did make the mouths stand out too much. maybe if they were empty/black instead of filled with silver but my favorite is still the "positive" design. and quister is right, there is some weird texture going through this one that wasn't on the others.

No on the bubbles! It commercializes, it distracts from the design and it has absolutely no meaning to anyone not involved with threadless.

The bubbles are empty in the real deal. It's very hard to find a good gold color without using an gradient (I used it in V5 and after that people didn't get it no more. I know the bubbles will be misleading but I'll take that chance.

P.S..You have a poor title and a bad thumbnail picture which is why I did not get to see it first time round and so did not vote for it. Now (by luck) I have seem it and I will give it....£5

Thanks Chris! It's a shame that you can't change the thumbnail and title when submitting new versions in the critique.
Now it's called "Debate Day" and the thumbnail is slightly more intresting :) |

Speech bubbles or not?
|
|
I think the picture to the left presents the gold foil effect and the design in the best way you've done so far.
The "gold foil" labeling is too big in the presentation and distracts from the design. Think of a painting in a museum with its name and the artist displayed next to it. It's noticeable and readable but not competing with the art. As you know, I'm not in love with the speech bubbles. The design itself readily conveys that there's conversation and interaction going on. So, I think the bubbles are unnecessary and add nothing to conveying your "debate" concept. I find them disruptive to the design's former rhythm and harmony. This is only my opinion. You, of course, will decide what you think is best, and I will respect that, no matter what. |
|
Gigguli on Jan 19 '08
The gold foil label was a huge misstake in the previous version and you make an good point for this label in this version also. I will try to work a simple and light solution for it. (Now I've also learned that you shouldn't submit anything when your practically sleepwalking)

lmao. Sometimes it's brilliant at night but falls apart in the morning light. I've got quite a bit of experience with that.

i say no speech bubbles and i don't think you need to have that gradiant in there to simulate the gold foil, people will get it. i really love this and i hope it gets printed!

I don't normally like speech bubbles but as there is no actual text in them they take on a very different "feel." I like them a lot in this particular design, there shape goes well with the other elements on the tee. I espeacally like the way they loosey form a sort of black "roof" above every thing
|
|
Chris Carney on Jan 19 '08
..they may have been put there just as speech bubbles but they function very well in contrast to the gold areas. If you lose the speech bubbles I think the design might look less balanced

Without the "speech bubbles" you run into the anti-white shirt syndrome . Too much space at the top. It will make women look fat
|
|
Gigguli on Jan 19 '08
Nice to know it has a name :P
I'm still wonder about which version is more popular, bubbles or no bubbles. Please feel free to comment that one, when you have gone through the trouble to look here! So the question is: Bubbles or no bubbles? |
|
Great V. No bubbles. Submit already ;)

i would like the bubbles more if they weren't solid black, maybe just outlines or maybe all in gold instead of all black.
|
|
jpweeks on Jan 20 '08
cool, it looks ready to go
|
|
Gigguli on Jan 20 '08
I think the bubbles would fit more to the silver version. When the focus is more on the mouths rather than hair and teeth.
I made a little preview of The gray & silver version w/ bubbles. |
|
lajlaj on Jan 20 '08
i'm not a fan of the grey and solver version.
i like the bubbles because the solid black element is nice. i haven't looked at all the past versions to see if you tried this already, but i think some speech bubbles not at the top might work well. pretty much ready to sub in my opinion. |
|
Gigguli on Jan 20 '08
Thank you. I'm gonna still try a thing or two with the bubbles before submission. The heavy black takes a lot of attention so I'm gonna try to smoothen that out, you'll see later ;)

The gray and silver version would look brilliant with gold as well, in fact I'd say it would become the best version of all it would look amazing

If I understand you correctly, you suggest that I change the silver lines to gold?
|
|
All right! All right! I give up!
The bubbles do actually work when the illo is in the negative. The mouths are dominant and reflect the shapes of the bubbles which emphasizes/reinforces the concept of conversations going in all directions. There's a spacial tension between the shapes which feels like a back and forth just like a debate or verbal sparing. Would you sub this, you're making me crazy. And thanks for the link to the T-Shirt photos. |

Chris Carney on Jan 20 '08
You can submit more that one version if you like. Try combining the gold parts ,hair..ect with the silver parts, lines, open part of mouth not the teeth..ect and the gray background...I think you should sub more the then one version because quister is a man on the edge
