i really love your line work! maybe if they were looking at the art, cause right now i'm not sure what they're looking at.
hmm i hear ya..i figured kiddo was looking off at the next thing, because thats what kids do in museums, and dad was looking at the painting in front of him, which in a sense is everyone who is looking at the shirt.
If I turn their heads to look at the paintings, you wont see their faces though.. Dont you think it just looks like they are looking at paintings, but they are just on the walls that you can't see. |

maybe a different color for the floor that fades out?
It looks sort of weird having the adult robot have the same colors as the background. maybe he could be a bit darker, and all the same color. |

new version, robots are a little bigger, background is a lot smaller.
Anyone think that maybe Im making 4 different shirts? that each element in this design could really stand on its own.. thats what Im thinking, but I like them all together, too, and well Im just indecisive so help me out. here are a couple of links to larger versions of, the two robots, and the paintings. |
what do you guys think?
Just my opinion, but I would get rid of the blue floor, get rid of the lines defining the walls, and put all three paintings on straight across the tee. I would also manually draw the frames, the clean thin vector frame really clashes with the sketchiness of the robos and I like the sketchiness more here. . .
do you mean without the father daughter robots?
no keep them in there but I just think they should be on a level field as the paintings. . . like just straight on from a side view, straight across. . . maybe you could even re-draw the robots and have standing right in front of one of the paintings contemplating it. . . understand? =)
cillaxvanilla on Dec 13 '07
I like it, except I don't really like the floor and the lines making the wall. Maybe make the painting with the two robots on the same wall as the other two paintings?
then we would be looking at the back of their heads if I did that.. I could draw another robot contemplating the art..
Ill give it a go with all the paintings lined up.. thanks for the input.. stay tuned. |
cloverstick on Dec 14 '07
i could see this going in another direction into "history of art as portrayed by robots"... but that would be a totally different shirt.
i kinda like the idea of seeing the back of the robots heads, and the viewer looking at the artwork straight on. even if the father/daughter were silhouettes, mystery science theater 3000 style. maybe the faces on the father/daughter arent quite as important as the robot faces in the paintings? im just throwing ideas out there. |

decided to give this a try.. just one robot, view is his back contemplating art.
I like this much, much better than your previous attmepts. You're definitely getting there, but I still think EVERYthing in the design would have more unity if you manually drew it all sketchy, like the picture frames included. They still look too clean and straight to me.
I think I see what you are saying.. Do I need the little girl robot in? Or do you think it works better with just this one.
I think it works better without the girl but that's just my opinion, you can try with too.

i dunno, can't quite place it, but something is lacking. maybe have the robot hold the hand of a little bot like u did in the first versions (both of them having backs facing us).

I like it. I'm not too sure about the extreme bottom placement. maybe a little higher? maybe not? The design is good, though.

Maybe you could have labels/names under each photo in metal or in a digital format (something robots would read)
ya think? It would have to be kind of abstract because I dont think you would be able to read them that small, but Im thinking you mean like robot hieroglyphics?
elpmet on Dec 14 '07
Yeah like binary code, bolts on a metal plate, a digital alarm clock showing symbols, etc. I wouldn't worry about making it readable.

Maybe you could thicken some of the lines on the robots.
The red in the paintings and the magenta on the kid robot is a little piercing. Perhaps you could find softer colors. Try to work on the whole overall color scheme. when it comes to color, less is more (at least most of the time). The abstract painting could use a little work, or just a different one. It seems a little out of place. |
Thanks, I chose paintings that I loved, the red in the abstract painting has to be there as its integral to the look of the piece, and I know its a piercing color, thats why I didnt want to use it in just that one spot. You are right though, I mean I could render a different painting, I will have to think about that. Matisse is a highly recognized work, as is the Casatte one in the middle, the one on the left is Modigliani, and not as recognizable.
I would like to here every one else's opinion on changing the art work before I go ahead with the change. |
The Dance might work better.. Ill give it some more thought.

I would say make it a bit smaller on the shirt and sub it. I love the color changes you made and after 13 versions I think it's time to move on. If you make it smaller I think it'll look pretty darn good.

Mmm, here's my 2cents worth. If I were you, I would give it a twist by replace the three art pieces with things that we are familiar with.
For instance, you can have a smiling robot Monalisa.. or saaay, a baby robot hand holding onto the index finger of an adult robot hand? Just suggestions you might wanna consider :) Give me your comment too! http://www.threadless.com/critique/11432/Groove |

I plan on working on all of that, at this point what I would really like to hear is what you think of the concept, which is simply a robot dad taking his robot daughter to the art museum.
Bonus Points if you can name the paintings and artists.. ;)
