the owl is huge, right? lol.. Im critiquing myself..
hmm.. in order to see the owl, i feel like it either has to be as big as it is, or it could be a different color.. |
loserkid1981 on Dec 06 '07
go with the belt print on the left.
Im afraid of overflowing threadless with beltprints.. Seems a lot of people are doing them.. but I will submit whichever works.. Just looking for some more feedback..
thanks loserkid1981.. |
richardofyork on Dec 06 '07
Yes, my first thought was that the owl is huge. Not a problem with the belt print one, but on the other, well, you notice it.
Nor does the owl look really like it's holding on to a branch. Again, on the belt print one, that doesn't matter so much. |
ill work on it a bit..

took out the crazy tree in the background and replaed it with some leaves. I also added another owl, different kind..
Hey Danielles, thanks for the crit! I really like where the way this is looking, I'm gonna have to go with brown for best color choice. One thing you could fix is that the bottom owl's feet look a little too long, maybe as if he is some kind of alien life form owl? I would say shorten them or maybe even make them almost non-existent and you've got yourself a great sub.
oh yes and also if the top owl is outlined maybe you should think about outlining the bottom one as well. Makes things more unified!
Dorian Mode on Dec 06 '07
I love the owls! It seems like less of a camouflage now, though. At least, I think that's what you were going for.
yeah I will have to change the name..
The bottom owl, well his legs are that long because its a borrowing owl, and thats how long there legs are, I understand where you are coming from, but I dont want to misrepresent the type of owl that it is. Do you think put an outline around that one, or take the outline off the other one, because before I posted this version I had thoughts of removing that part. |
BackofYourHead on Dec 06 '07
It's looking pretty nice and refined. I personally like the outline idea, let's see how it looks. :)

I really like the first version... in belt print
looks great on 1st version
i think this 1 need some BACKGROUND layer ^^ nice placement |

this is good, the only problem i have about it is the bottom owl's feet..other then that..
brilliant :] |

I think I dealt with the owls feet problem, let me know if it still needs work.
As far as more of a background goes, im thinking about it, I have to consider the space that is printable if this is not a belt print. as it is now, Im not even sure if they can print this large but again, ill look into it.. any ideas for background, or anything else. oh i also added the border and a little more detail in the borrowing owl at the bottom. |
sjgrovo on Dec 06 '07
wow, i think that's pretty great, and I love it in brown, on the shirt.
yeah it's lookin' better, but I still think you need to do something about those feet. I can totally undertand your logic behind not wanting to distort the owl's anatomy because that's how it looks in real life, but the thing is that's not exactly how people commonly THINK owls look in real life. If they see something that's a little weird-lookin' even though it's the truth, they might want it to look "normal" Hope you understand this, and remember it's just my opinion, and it's YOUR shirt!

I wrote a big long message before and it decided not to show up.
to sum up everything that I wrote. thanks for the help so far, and I would love to hear what you think of this version. |
gotta go out soon, hoping to get a few opinions on this before I do.
One thing that I am going to address with these is for a dark t-shirt this design would work, the difference being instead of the dark color ink that you see here, the transparent part would be cream or white and could be printed on a dark shirt, I will do a version of that later. |

yeah thats me.
i added more foliage, and changed the owls positioning a little on both versions, either the dark on the light or the light on anything. |

anyone else?

Mod Monkey on Dec 07 '07
the brown and creams are nice -- i don't care for the blue as much. this has evolved into a very nice design.
richardofyork on Dec 07 '07
That's a lot better. I wasn't sure about the first version at all but this is really nice.
Only one TINY comment - I see the design on the white t-shirt is ever so slightly different from the one on brown (my favourite). You've added an extra leaf just above the top owl's wing. I get why you did this, but it kind of looks like it's overlapping where he owl's wing should be, if you see what I mean. It's not really a problem, I'm just being picky, but perhaps you could make the leaf longer and thinner outline the owl's wing better. |
this looks way better than your past versions, I'm gonna say go ahead and sub it. Good luck!
dimlylitstar on Dec 07 '07
I think you need a wing on the blue and brown. It doesn't read well as an owl without it.

Beanie-o's colours ftw

Im such a noob.. I actually had to go to google and type in ftw to see what that meant.. I found an urban dictionary that says its For The Win.. so that explains that.. but what about the Beanie-o?

Oooooh, I like it! Did you illustrate the owl yourself?
I Illustrated the owls with photographic references. I need reference to draw pretty much anything unfortunately..
Whats everyones pick for the shirt color? I like the teal grey color.. |
tix on Dec 07 '07
Personally, I would want it on brown, i just like the way the owl would blend in, not sure how the leaves would look though.
As for the illustrating thing, I use refernce photos for almost every illustration I do in potoshop or illustrator, infact there are alot of great Graphic Design artists who do the same( i.e. Hydro74, check out his site if you haven't, amazing) so don't get to bummed about it :) |

new version, just changed a few things, and made it so people could see the design on different color shirts. Let me know what you guys think, should there be more shirt color options? fewer? Is the design missing anything?
and the name is there a better title for this design now that it has changed from the first version? any suggestions? |
takes a little while for the detail to show up, I will add a caveat before I submit.
no advice?
Chipmnk on Dec 08 '07
Ooo, very nice. I definitely like the flow of the illustration. Still, there is something weird about that bottom owl. I thought it was wearing a scarf at first and then I realized those were its legs. :)
But I definitely think it's a pretty design. Sorry, I'm not a designer so my advice is less than sufficient. Good luck! |
I guess i see what u are saying, but the dark area is his chest and belly and then his legs, the only part that is really seeing light are the wings. I could put some more detail in his chest and belly to see if that helps break it up some..
there just needs to be some defining detail on the top of his legs so its easier to see
i mean, easier to tell those are his legs

for now, Im just uploading the graphic, no placement, just so i dont have to repeat the whole process of placing the graphic etc. if anyone wants to see placement, look at the previous version.
I altered the legs of the little owl.. does it help? |
locowoman on Dec 08 '07
I really like it :)
thanks, can you guys tell the feet are feet better now?
oh and color selection what do you guys think. I definitely want the slate blue/green color, and I think it looks good on the others, but would like to hear what you think.
also print techniques, do you think I should request anything wacky? like flock for the birds, or I was thinking maybe a metallic clear over beige for the beige part of the design. |
Dorian Mode on Dec 08 '07
To me, the feet look the same as they have since v4. You could consider puff ink, but I'm not sure if special techniques are necessary.
Ok well maybe I am misunderstanding what the problem with the feet are.. Is it the color? Is it the shape? I thought the problem was that they weren't defined enough, so I added some contrast to the area by adding some more detail of nails, and some feathers on the legs.
So if someone could be a little more specific with what the issue is, I would gladly take a look at it and see if it is something that i can fix. |
Dorian Mode on Dec 08 '07
I think the feet look fine, so I guess I can't help you there.
ok who clicked needs work? and why.. Im so close to submitting this..

KCRoss on Dec 08 '07
I think it would look better with out the little owl. Kind of like a sash across the shirt. I love it anyways.

does anyone prefer this version with just the one owl.. that would solve the problems anyone might have with the other ones feet.
BackofYourHead on Dec 09 '07
I personally like just the one owl. I thought it would cause balance issues, but it completes the style a little more to just have this elegant sash-like design draping down the shirt. I like it, but I can never tell anyone if it should be the final design or not. It's looking good, though.
If you would mind taking a look at my design, nobody seems to be commenting on it :/ Thanks |
owls are always cool, the leaves are OK as well. You could try to work the leaf pattern into the owls feathers.

new version, think this is the best. I took everyones ideas into consideration.
If you click needs work please let me know why, because If I don't know why then I can't fix it. I hope you guys like this version. |
I actually super love the belt print. Sure, some people are subbing belt prints but it's usually many-of-the-same thing like those scrub tops pediatric nurses wear. Yours is actually kinda cool.
Thanks Kooka.. I think what I am gonna do is save that belt print idea for another project, because I still like it too.. I think though for this one, I like it with the leaves. and the sash sort of feeling.. So keep your eyes out for that belt print in a later submission from me.
oh and I am looking for suggestions for a new title, so if anyone has any I would like to hear em..
that's pretty sweet!

thanks, any ideas for a title?

Oh man, I would love this on some crazy colour combination....
like what polyester?
Polyester Jones on Dec 10 '07
I don't know, like really bright colours...as is, on the khaki, brown, beige type colours I probably wouldn't wear it.
But good design. |
Dorian Mode on Dec 10 '07
You should call it "Owl Be Back," because puns are the bestest.

lol, if the owl was on the back of the shirt that would be a cute title.. it doesnt seem to fit in here though.
and whats up with the 3 dont submit votes? |
