This is my effort for the 'Science is culture' Seed comp. I'm hoping it will eventually be clear - but its a little hard to see at the moment because its just a sketch. If you can't make it out yet - its the invisible man doing a beer funnel with his lab buddies. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

i love the idea! have you tried seeing how it would work without the chair? though i guess it is more interesting/animated to have the lab buddies looking UP at the invisible guy.

oh! is there anyway to have the invisible guy wearing boxers AND glasses?

those boxers seem a little low to me, but im not really an anatomy expert so i may be mistaken

haha one more thought- you could have the various guys each be a different nationality/ethnic group.. making the invisible guy even more mysterious because you really have no idea what he looks like, considering his company is already diverse.

This is political correctness gone mad! Lol - just kidding. Point taken - I might add a bit of ethnicity. The boxers should be right Frank, as I drew the invisible character in before removing everything but the visible bits. I can add glasses also if people think that would make it clearer.



Also - I think the chair is an important element - because is not only gives the illustration more height - it eludes to the fact that these partying boffins are throwing caution to the wind and rocking out! Like boffins do.

I've inked it in, and this is effectively what will be the outline. Not yet vectored. I may add a pair of glasses to invisible man at a later date, but I'm not sure its entirely necessary at the moment. Let me know what you think before the next stage - because I can still make adjustments now. Thanks

this is looking great! can i ask why you ink your sketches on paper first rather than putting it into illustrator and "inking" it from there?

Just because I like to work the old fashioned way, with paper until I have to make the change to digital.Just in the process of cleaning up the image. Will post the vector version shortly. I need ideas for shirt colours!

I'm determined to do this design on a bold colour instead of a light colour. The green is far from a done deal, but it is a contender. Also thinking of dark blue, and red. Maybe something unusual like purple. Your thoughts are appreciated! Cheers.

great thanks. OK well i was thinking of shirt colours. Its obvious but pacific blue or light blue would look good. Maybe go for something different have the desing looking slightly worn like a retro shirt. A deviation from your usual clean work but it might look cool.

The shading that gave the sketch a clearer third dimension is absent at the moment, but thats the ext thing on the 'to do' list. I quite like this colour scheme. Any thoughts always appreciated.

Yeah - the crease on the chair will make sense when the shadin goes in and you can see that the feet of the invisible dude are making an imprint.

Also - the blue hair, if grey with a touch of blue. I can grey it a bit more or just make it white. Will probably do the later, but I need a blue grey colour for shading on the lab coats

Ooooh....He's standing on the chair! My eyes were decieving me, I though he was behind the chair. Maybe add feet impressions in the seat cushion.

The paint layers are still pretty rough at the mo, and will need refining. Also - I intend to make the party hats look more like party hats with a bit of decoration. Thanks for your comments so far. Let me know what you think. Cheers.

Cheers bud. I tried it on lighter colours, but all my recent subs have been on light colours. Don't know if this ia a good enough reason not to. I might present light and bold colour options.

I know it's needed for the joke to work, but surely his stomach would be invisible too?

Haha. Yeah - his stomach is invisible, but the liquid isn't. If you've ever seen Hollow Man (don't go out of your way), you can see anything that he ingests go inside him in this way. But after a while it turns invisible - like magic.

NB: Hollow Man is NOT the authority on issues of invisibility.

So no shitty colons then ;-)

The feet imprints looks like they are facing the viewer but his shorts are facing the scientists on the left...rotate the feet prints to face the left scientists! I like it so far & think the colors look good.

Lol @ JB. Yes mezo - I've noticed that myself, but when I drew the (visible) figure on the chair, he was effectively twisting his body around to the right. I understand what you mean though - and I'll edit that before I produce a new version, so it looks correct. Cheers guys.

I think the red shirt works but I find the cushion to be out of place in the design. While it gives you a way to show the feet impressions maybe you can achieve it in another way, (have them wearing socks?!) I'm not sure. I just remember those old wooden chairs from science class that are so painful to sit on, so the cushion seems out of place.

Also as a detail, maybe some spilt liquid coming from the empty bottles?

Thanks Sam - I'm going to try to make the cushion work with a bit of careful painting. And I thought about drawing in a bit of beer spillage - but I didn't think it was integral, and was just another element that potentially could go wrong!

Thanks guys. If he didn't have the strap, the hat would fall off his invisible head. Plus- it serves to give an idea of the size and the direction that his head is facing - so I need to keep it in.

i love watching the progress of your subs fatheed. you have some great talent

maybe to get around the hat strap add some other "head gear" to define the head like nerdy glasses / chem lab safety googles...not sure if that would be too distracting though

I will work on improving the quality of the gif before submission, but this is more or less it - it works well on white and grey and even yellow, but I really don't want to sub on those colours at the moment, so he it is on green. I think these might be the colour options I will present. Amongst other things, I neatened up the shading and highlights, and decorated the party hats and alligned the feet indents properly. Let me know what you think before I submit - if it needs any emergency changes! Thanks for your comments.

PS: Also changed the colour outline for the suspended liquid, which I think works a lot better.

Hi - I was playing around with the presentation. I think I'll submit it like this, because white does justice to the detail, and then it gives an option to print on white, red or green shirts.

I prefered V4, concerning the people. i don't really like the brown shadows on their trousers. Perhaps could you try a grey background/tee...
